NGP could be delayed by Japanese earthquake

Sony Computer Entertainment America president Jack Tretton says supply-chain disruptions caused by disaster may delay the forthcoming portable in some regions.

By any reckoning, the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan were humanitarian tragedies on a massive scale. However, the twin disasters--and subsequent nuclear crisis--have also created a massive logistical nightmare for Japanese industry, causing many companies such as Toyota and Honda to shutter factories.

The NGP may be delayed by the tragic events in Japan.

Unfortunately for gamers, another one of the companies affected is Sony. The electronics giant has also temporarily shut down several plants in Northern Japan for repairs, as well as others in other regions because of parts shortages.

As a result, Sony's forthcoming portable, the NGP, could be delayed, according to Sony Computer Entertainment America president Jack Tretton. Speaking with Bloomberg, the executive said the industrial disruption might lead to a postponement of the handheld's launch in some territories.

"It may be the straw that says 'Maybe we get to just one market by the end of the year,'" he told the financial news service. He added that a later launch could have the benefit of allowing publishers an extended development period for their NGP launch titles.

Announced at an event in January, the NGP had been scheduled to be released this holiday season in undisclosed territories. The handheld boasts a 16:9 5-inch OLED touch screen, a multi-core ARM CPU, a PowerVR multi-core GPU, a touch pad, dual thumbsticks, and gyroscopic control, and will come in Wi-Fi-only and 3G models. Sony's head of worldwide development, Shuhei Yoshida, said in a GameSpot interview that "It's closer to PlayStation 3 [than the PSP was to the PS2]," in terms of processing capabilities. Sony has said the goal is to make it as easy as possible for developers to bring their assets and programming techniques from the PlayStation 3 over to the NGP.

When your nation is in a nuclear crisis, surely it's best to conserve power for the necessities.

@KingSora1991 Sorry King. Replied a bit too quickly there. I presume that you are therefore advocating a total boycott of Japanese-produced items so as not to put pressure on their manufacturing sector? Or perhaps you're seeking that people don't get excited about anything from Japan, therefore massively undermining commercial confidence and causing further damage to the economy? That'd be a GREAT idea! Just as well you will never amount to anything so you cannot put your gob-smackingly ridiculous ideas into effect anywhere other than the benefits office or McDonalds.

@KingSora1991 I take it that you're realising your own incredible stupidity and ignorance here. Don't worry - I accept your humble and grovelling apology in advance of receiving it since you're clearly too busy posting ill-considered comments :) Wait! Maybe your comments are some of those 'Guy Cocker miscommunicated irony' moments. If so, you're one funny guy, King!

@KingSora1991 Eh? Surely buying Japanese products would be a great way to support Japan?

F#ck the NGP! I like sony products but Japan is 10x more important right now. Thumbs up if you think I'm right. Thumbs down if you are some of the people who don't care for Japan and think video games is more important in your boring everyday lives. To the people who thumbs down, you're dumb b@stards. nuff said.

Just what NGP needed: more time before it was released. It'll never catch 3DS at this rate. Poor Japanese people  Stupid earthquake

Japan and its people getting back on their feet is the priority. People first. We can wait for them, and help them out as much as we can.

I think Japan is alot more important than the "NGP". Hopefully other people think the same thing. I hope Japan recover very quickly. Prayers are with them :)

This is understandable that NGP could be delayed because of the March 11 earthquake. Japan will need time to get back to normal. So NGP can wait.

you can donate money to the japan relief fund through psn. even if its just a couple of $s you should still do it on an unrelated note. i think that if nintendo cant get some decent core games out soon the 3ds may just be another house wives console leaving the ngp to capitalise on the core gamers market. but thats just imo. hopefully both will do well. you can never have too many consoles :)

Totally understandable.....however it sais delays in some markets....so that prob just means europe sigh.

So is the entire NGP going to be manufactured in Japan, or do they just make the parts and the send them to China for assembly? Be nice if it was 100% made in Japan. Anyway, I just hope they can get back on track for a huge release.

Much ado about nothing. He said it might be delayed in some markets. I'm sure that what production is made will target the 3 big markets on the same schedule that they had before. An article written up only to garner some free publicity and sympathy.

This will just give the 3DS a larger lead. If the NGP doesn't get out before Christmas, it'll be an uphill battle for them, just like the PS3 was.

@rb89 You said, "At the top is, of course, Activision Blizzard. The difference of opinions is not about software. It is the hardware and online platforms. Please keep on subject." I'm saying your subject about hardware sales is irrelevant. At this point in this generation of consoles race each console has been out for more than 5 years. Therefore each has cemented its position in the market. Now it is all about Software.

@grootelaar I wasn't talking about the earthquake I was talking about them delaying the NGP and yes that earthquake was bad

@LindBergh2007 You said, "Also, I can tell you that Sony won't be in the hardware business much longer anyway. They'll be exiting by 2015" That is where I stopped reading your comment.

I want the ngp so bad but if they are really affected by the earthquake then we will have to wait.

rb89

@awheaten If you want to bring software sales into this, then you will find that Sony Computer Entertainment, Nintendo and Microsoft Game Studios are lower on the chart in software sales. At the top is, of course, Activision Blizzard. The difference of opinions is not about software. It is the hardware and online platforms. Please keep on subject.

thsi delay is both good and bad it is bad because we have to wait longer but it is good so they can make it better and better launch line and also so that they can get the important stuff done first like taken care of the people and getting japan back up and running also I get more time with my psp go which I just purchase

NeoJ4K3. While that probably wasn't the right time to say that I do agree with you. Also, I can tell you that Sony won't be in the hardware business much longer anyway. They'll be exiting by 2015. SEGA is planning to annouce a bunch of new exciting surprises next month: A new game tablet called: KIDSPAD http://www.trademarkia.com/kidspad-85264286.html And a OEM deal with UK tech giant Imagination Tech for next gen high end ray tracing graphics for thier next arcade board which will have a console : http://www.kaldata.com/comments.php?catid=4&id=55129 Anyway, I still offer my condolances to the Tsunami victims.

I hate delays as much as teaser trailers but this is the most serious thing to delay something because of. I still hope to the best to the Japanese people, hope you get back on your feet and get back to leading the way, your always advancing so quickly it's incredible.

As long as people are able to get their lives back on track after such a tragic event that's all that matters in this sort of a situation.

@rb89 Sure, Sony is behind the two other companies in sales. But that doesn't mean that they aren't selling well.

awheaten
awheaten

@rb89 Its doesn't matter about who sales the most hardware, it is about who sales the most software. In that department Sony, is gaining momentum especially w/ their 1st party games. Will any of the 1st party games sales more than a game like Halo? Why no. That being said, games like Madden, 2K are selling more on the PS3. It will be interesting on how NGP will sell, and if they're going to come out w/ a good game w/ the system.

rb89

@OmegaGear You are right about my vocabulary misfire. Sorry. High school english wasn't my strong subject. haha You are also right about Wii hacking and 360 hacking but the difference is that PS3 has become irreversible and has been attacked more than the former two consoles. The problem is that the PS3 is more like a PC than a gaming console and a powerful PC at that. The PSN has had more crashes than Xbox Live. The way things are looking, unless Sony makes some big changes, it will only get worse with more volume.
