NFS Carbon demo speeds out

Demo for EA's next-gen speedster zooms onto Xbox Live Marketplace; sample features three rides, new autosculpting feature, trio of races.

A few Electronic Arts franchises have already made their second round in the next generation--NBA Live, Madden NFL, NHL, and FIFA. But come the end of the month, one series outside of EA Sports goes for a second lap on Microsoft's Xbox 360. Need for Speed Carbon, the follow-up to Need for Speed Most Wanted, will be released on October 31.

To give gamers a taste of what's to come, EA today released a demo of NFS Carbon on Xbox Live Marketplace. Speed freaks will get a chance to sample three rides--Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 1X MR Edition, Chevrolet Camaro SS, and Lamborghini Gallardo--in the 1.06GB download.

Racers will also be able to try out the new auto sculpting feature, which lets gamers tinker with hoods, bumpers, spoilers, and other knickknacks. There are three types of races to burn rubber on: drift races, circuit races, and an unlockable head-to-head canyon race with the trash-talking Kenji.

Need for Speed Carbon is rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older and will also be released on the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, PC, DS, and Game Boy Advance. PlayStation 3 and Wii versions are also currently in development. For more information, read GameSpot's previous coverage.

I'm pretty sure it'll be better when it's released. Remember that a Demo only has the partial. Not only features but also the framerates and stuff are usually a bit or lots worse than the real game itself. We'll have the anser when the games comes out, untill then just chill out and stop complaining AS THE GAME HASN'T EVEN BEEN RELEASED.

does anybody know the cars that are going to be in the game?? i cant wait till it comes out!

anyone who says the cars handle horribly must really be crappy at getting the hang of these games cuz it took me like half an hour to get , not great, but pretty dang good at this game....after I got the hang of it I was winning every race by a mile...I think this game is going to be the best out of all the NFS games just because of the large variety of cars u can have....and other obvious things...

I hope the game is good

The cars do handle horribly but you do have to admit the new autosculpt feature is a nice touch to the game.

umm.. no idea which demo some of you guys were playing, I love NFSU2 on the xbox but this demo looks bad, the cars handles terribly and the frame-rate is all over the place. Racing games benifit from 60 FPS to give you a decent sense of speed and with the 360's hardware why the hell can't EA achieve this? Maybe Sony paid off EA to make it look sh1te on the 360, I sure as heck aint buying this for 360 I'll play the xbox one for less money...

I've heard that there will be multiple vinyl layers and that the cops are back! Is the demo any good?

wild_world_girl I know PGR isn't a actual racing sim.. hence the "ARCADE VS SIM (or some what of a sim)" that i've put in the beginning of my thread... it just handles and try to feel more like a sim than an arcade game. Anyways.. after trying the demo.. i'm definately buying this game when it comes out. AutoSculpt is really nice... if it can be done with multiple visual upgrade (i.e other spoilers/skirts/bumpers/wheels) it's going to be great and hours of customizing! As for the fact that you "can't see what's coming"... well I guess it most suck if you're playing it on a conventional TV... but on a 32" HDTV... it really handles well. Won the First race with the Camaro on my first run. Didn't get to really use my crew member though... lol.. felt more like an AI cheerleader following me. So if you're a fan of the NFS series... you should definately take a lot at this one (or just simply buy it). Drifting is different this time around. No need for handbraking. It's easy pulling off 70.000+ drifts once you get the hang of it. My guess is... steering ajustments might be needed.. but I sincerely doubt that EA forgot to put that option back in. I'm hoping for one thing right... more paint/vinyl customizing. NFS:U2 had multiple layers of vinyls... while NFS:MW only had one layer... anyone used the numbers vinyls? I don't want my car to look like that freaking VW Beetle Herbie from the Disney movies. Did anyone hear if the cops were back in this one? can't find anything saying so.

The reason it's choppy and it's framerate is down is because it's running off the harddrive so that makes sense, I think 90% of demos I playaed had framerate issues, only thing I hope they change is the physics just make cars go faster and easier to turn and I'll be happy.

Yeah this demo sucks... what the hell happened to NFS?!? used to be one of my favourite games

The demo was ok, but I think the one for NFS: MW better.

The demo was alright. One of the things that's key in racing games is the ability to actually see things, and the first race was a bit bad as far as actually being able to see what's coming. It didn't feel like you're driving a car as fast as it's supposed to be in the game either, I hope they tweak that. Not to mention the drift was wild as hell to handle when compared to NFS:U2.

Played the demo... Most Wanted was more enjoyable. This game concept is just trying to cash in on the Fast & The Furious:Tokyo Drift - so fans of drift racing will only like this.

most wanted was great so this should be just as good!

i dont think carbon is going be a great game. it looks very similar to nfs u2. most wanted was the best street racing game out of all nfs street racing games.

The Demo was probably built for X06 last month and actually used older code probably 1 or 2 before that . Based on that, I can only hope that in the 3 months that followed up till release they will have sorted out all issues. Cheers.

I played it and have seen the good and bad... Good: Cars at least handle diffrently. All cars are'nt all cookie cutter selections. I like the crewmember feature. auto sculpt could be awsome. Bad: Grafics arent all that impressive. races feel more like official closed courses as opposed to street racing. speed was'nt too impressive. up the framerate and speed. Eh what ya gonna do It is better than Most wanted by a little bit. One month left till release. (truth be told nothing is gonna change though. Its EA)

just to copy what artemisgone was talking about. i wasn't really impressed with the demo either. i know they got at least a few weeks before they have to mass produce it for retailers, but i hope within those few weeks that they fix some of the aforementioned noticables. like the graphics, they don't look as lush or improved from most wanted. it looks like they are more rough and unpolished. i didn't really get a sense of speed racing through circuits. i'd be goin at probly 120 or so and it felt like 50. the drifting i will have to get use to though. i remember from underground and that was fine, but in the demo it was all over the place. i didn't really have to use the handbrake, and i felt like i was using the stick more and more just to get the car strait again. i'll probly just have to get use to the game when it comes out or somethin'. it's just a demo and it's not the final product i know. this was more of a impressions take on the demo. NFS still rocks.

Thats cool, I just wish they would make the game day and night, like, 24-hr in-game clock, with sunsets, and rain. Yeah, weather would be cool.

I'm not one to normally complain about demos / games, but I'm actually not pleased with this demo. I'm not comparing it to any other racing game, other than NFS Most Wanted. My beef with this so far is the framerate and the graphics. Framerate usually isn't an issue to me, but in racing games, it is. The thing about the graphics that isn't pleasing me is the rather cartoonish look to everything. I don't know, maybe it's because the setting is at night again, but it just seems overly pastel-ish with the graphics. Motion blur is a little overdone too. My last little complaint is the drift racing... from what I've seen toying with it... it's a bit too easy to get the car into a drift... I know this is slightly arcadish action, but I would think you would at least have to hit the brakes slightly to send the car into a drift. I do understand that this is a demo and shouldn't represent the final product, but it should give a good idea of what to expect. I'll toy around with it all a little more to obsorb it. Sorry to nit pick, but I've had a long day and needed an outlet to vent for a few moments. /disreguard rant

I downloaded it....it was good I have to say, and NFS fans will definately like this one. The fact that people are comparing a street racer to PGR3 and Forza is sad. Anyways, for PS2 gamers, if you want to play the Demo, its in the November 2006 issue of OPM's disk. Its a good read as well since the issue also has Pics of Oblivion on PS3 and the PSP Elder scrolls.

I think EA is pretty confident in this one considering the demo comes so fast. Same thing can't be said for NBA Live 07 though.

hey kids who say this game sux you havent put 30+ hours into a need for speed game so dont complain oh yea, and this demo is running off of a crappy hard drive so of course its slower de de deeeeeeee

Kingkongjay, I played the demo and it's safe to say that this game is going to be as good if not better than Most Wanted. My problem with all recent Need 4 Speed games is that the dialogue and "acting" are REALLY cheesy (this demo included) and the cars aren't that fast.

Thanks for the Demo. I know its not the finished code........but it must be as near to it as possible.... Im not saying it has "slow down" but I did manage to make 3 cups of tea during a race without having to hit the pause button ! Was going to buy this game before reading reviews, now will wait before I spend £40 plus..... Great we can play the game b4 its released, cant help but wonder if this has been detrimental to its sales....

OMG would you people stop crying! It's a demo! The final game will probably be tighened up and you will most likely have the ability to buy upgrades to your car like NFS:MW to make the cars handle better and have more power. Jeez, give it a rest!
