989 Sports announced the availability of NFL GameDay '99 for the PlayStation and PC.

Developed by the same company behind NFL GameDay '98, GameDay '99 features TV-style presentation - incorporating player and coach "zoom-ins" and "cut-aways" and vocal commentary from Dick Enberg and Phil Simms - and what Sony (989 Sports' owner) calls Authentic Football Intelligence. That intelligence, according to Sony, has players thinking and reacting like they do in the NFL. "Doublebacks float in their zones and cover the deep threat, while linebackers and safeties shift based upon the offensive formation and motion." The game also features Total Control Passing that "lets gamers lead or underthrow receivers based upon the coverage they face."

NFL players' movements were motion captured and incorporated into the game's 3D player models. Pittsburgh Steelers' running back Jerome Bettis, Oakland Raiders' wide receiver Tim Brown, Tampa Bay Buccaneers' fullback Mike Alstott and linebacker Hardy Nickerson, New York Giants' center back Jason Sehorn, Seattle Seahawks' linebacker Chad Brown and the San Diego Charger's first round draft pick quarter back Ryan Leaf were among the nine NFL players captured.

Stadium blueprints were used to create the game's 3D stadium models. The game features more than 500 NFL plays.
