Next Xbox will not require Internet connection - Report

Leaked internal Microsoft memo for next-gen platform states system will be "tolerant of today's Internet."

by

Numerous reports have claimed Microsoft's next Xbox will require an Internet connection to function, but these assertions are false, according to an internal Microsoft memo obtained by Ars Technica.

"Durango is designed to deliver the future of entertainment while engineered to be tolerant of today's Internet," reads a line from the memo, reportedly sent to all full-time staffers working on the next Xbox.

"There are a number of scenarios that our users expect to work without an Internet connection, and those should 'just work' regardless of their current connection status," it goes on. "Those include, but are not limited to: playing a Blu-ray disc, watching live TV, and yes playing a single-player game."

It is not clear when the memo was sent to developers. A Microsoft representative told GameSpot, "We're excited to share more about the new generation of games, TV, and entertainment on May 21, but have nothing further to share at this time."

Most recently, noted Windows blogger Paul Thurrott claimed the Xbox 720 will require an Internet connection to function, but suggested that the feature "isn't as Draconian as many seem to believe."

Microsoft is widely believed to formally unveil its next Xbox during an intimate event at the company's headquarters in Redmond, Washington on May 21.

This announcement will "mark the beginning of a new generation of games, TV, and entertainment." The event will be streamed through Xbox.com, Xbox Live, and Spike TV in the United States and Canada.

sorry, MS has shattered my confidence in them.  The proof is in the pudding, I will wait until the Xbox one is on the market.  Leaked memos  don't prove MS will not alter what they have said after everyone has purchased the machine.  I will wait

Huh, it's almost like all these "reports" are total BS guessing and we should just wait until a system is actually announced before believing every bad thing about it, huh? Oh, wait, that actually makes sense. Lets just go back to being hysterical over things whether we have real proof or not.

Ive come to the conclusion that the gamespot community is at lest 1/2 playstation fanboys.

It doesn't necessarily confirm it wont be always on...

"There are a number of scenarios that our users expect to work without an Internet connection, and those should 'just work' regardless of their current connection status,"

Is just them saying "Our customers dont really want it to be always online" again, it doesn't say that it wont be.

On less thing for people to rant about. #DealWithIt

Looks like Adam Orth has to deal with it, eh? I bet it was already implemented but after the uproar it took them a while to remove it so now they can FINALLY deny it.

Since Sim City's release, and more recently the delightfully ignorant twitter comments by Adam Orth, the wave of negative opinion on the "always-on" concept is reaching tsunami levels.

Maybe Microsoft's original idea was for always-on, but they see the writing on the wall. PS4 has already confirmed no always-on, so MS would just be painting a big target on its back if they went with it.

I read it just fine. It was written incorrectly. You cannot `REFERENCE` a system that isn`t out  yet solely based on empty promises. AND, most games that are shared cross platform are better on Xbox 360, but best on high end PCs, I have all of them. Try playing the latest DMC on PS3 and all you get is screen fragmention and blurry background that doesn`t pop in smoothly.  I`ll wait and see for real results before I go willy-nilly with BS claims. XD

Nice! The fact that they had to release a company wide E-mail suggests that this is a new direction and a wide scale Policy change to save their collective hind ends. They couldn't wait to "leak" this Email and I'm sure it's related to the huge backlash they were facing. Score one for Internet backlash!

I'm still waiting for MS to say something about the next xbox that the PS4 doesn't already have

What I want in the new Xbox: 500GB SSD - 16GB GDDR3 ram - Intel Core i7 4th gen CPU - Geforce GTX Titan GPU - Blue Ray drive - Backwards compatibility with original, 360 games and controllers and for it to play PC games to would be nice... *runs*

It never ceases to amaze me how people at MS with such high IQs could be stupid enough not to implicitly understand that always on/anti-used games would be a fucking DISASTER of epic proportions and create such a massive negative backlash that it would likely doom the 720 to 2nd place behind the PS4...or perhaps worse, 3rd place behind even the still-born Wii U.

Understanding that you JUST DONT TOUCH USED GAMES and you JUST DONT REQUIRE PEOPLE TO ALWAYS BE ONLINE should just be AUTOMATIC. These are things you don't even think about implementing they are such obviously bad ideas.

Yet, somehow, MS ALMOST went there. The collective IQ's at that company needed a complete TOOL-SHED in Adam Orth to save them from their own sheer dumb-assery.... lol

My games better WORK if I bring my consoles to places that doesn`t have Internet.

Obviously, they decided to back pedal, after seeing the reaction of gamers across the internet after Orth's slip.
I guess the always online idea was orthenised.

Does this rumor mean that the other 40 articles written on gamespot are also rumors that were reported on?

Thanks for the Rumor Mill.  It's been a waste of time.

Than...why the heck did that dude awhile ago say something like, 'Deal with it.'?  Was he just not in the loop?  Wanted to hang himself in the public eye?  I am lost.

People avoid Percuvius2, he is a Troll on Rage, it must have hurt him allot that ALL Gamespot members where bashing and making jokes about MS and its Shitbox the past few weeks, poor thing.

Tolerant of today's internet, but maybe not so tolerant of today's wallet.

The lowest price I've heard for 720 is $400!

We are seemingly slowing down on aggro...come on doesn't this article make you angry? Doesn't it make you angry at the people who told you to buy PS because they said that xbox needed to be always online? Doesn't it make you angry that MS is still lying to you? And the xbox might be still always online or that they removed online and is now on damage control?

Facts? What of it! We have rumours! Okay doesn't it make you angry that we have rumours instead of facts! Or that we have facts but people are still spreading rumours!

Grrr the thought of it all makes me want to HULK SMASH.....

It really does....all this rage...Grrrr...

@emerin76 Not me. I'm seeing way more xbots compared to playstation fanboys, editors included.

@Phil-teh-PirateThe important part is " and those should 'just work' regardless of their current connection status" which to me is separate to the "users expect". I mean you have to be really, really, looking for reasons not to believe them if you are using that to plant doubt.

If this memo was sent out early it sounds like, "hey here's what we want, go do it" otherwise according to your scenario it's "ha ha here's what these suckers want, boy are they gonna be disappointed!" Hardly I think.

Then again we are talking about a rumour debunking another rumour so it's all nonsense until the 21st.

@kik4444 I'm still waiting for MS to announce the next xbox considering the only official thing they've said is "We will have something official to say on May 21."  I'd like to see something the PS4 has that the 360 doesn't.  A share button isn't gonna cut it for me.

@FuZzCasT lol Prepare to be wildly disappointed.... At this stage, I think most of us should just be happy they are releasing ANYTHING as long as it doesn't have this dumb-ass always on requirement....

The fact that the 720 (and PS4, for that matter) will have the same pure graphical horse-power as a low-end $100 AMD HD7700 video card that has been out for more than a year on PCs is besides the point. lol

xxYetterxx

@mjswooosh "Almost went there?!?" Where are you getting this information from.  There has literally not been any official word from Microsoft implementing an "always online" feature in their newest Xbox.  The speculation started with a rumor/leak and has been debunked by a rumor/leak.  I don't know why you would jump to the conclusion that MSFT was planning on doing this all along and then saw the outrage on the internet and decided against it.  I assure you MS is very good at running their business and they know what they are doing.

xxYetterxx
xxYetterxx

@TigusVidiks Sure, sure.  We have no evidence that this was ever suppose to be a feature in the final product but go ahead and speculate all you want.

@Andrew1073 No, he was very much in the loop. But he opened his mouth before MS was ready to announce it, and MS saw the negative reaction to the confirmation, and was forced to change their tune. If anything, MS should thank Adam Orth for saving them from what would have been a disaster.

@EggEmperor $400!

What the hell! We all got GFC'd and now they want us to sell our kidneys to the 1% to enjoy gaming! The hell MS!

Glongold

@jeffrobin @Phil-teh-Pirate But then again I think Phil might be on to something. The letter does not go into specifics what those scenarios are in detail. It could playing a music CD for example, or setting your screen resolution in other words really mundane activities not at all associated with gaming. If what I purpose is true then that letter is a fine example of how to veil an ugly truth on the system being an always-on device. Microsoft is a political culture and this memo is a shining example of veiled B.S, if the console is actually on-always. We shall see.

jeffrobin

@Glongold @jeffrobin @Phil-teh-Pirate Yeah maybe. In my book it's all veiled bullsh*t with these companies. Business wise it doesn't make sense to me to go the "have to be online to do anything" route and that's why i don't believe they will go that way. I'm certainly not naive enough to think anything out of MS or Sony for that matter is anything other than self serving. Having said that I'm not so cynical to not be excited to see what both have in store for us. Actually I struggle to wait :)

FuZzCasT

@xxYetterxx @FuZzCasT

Look at the PS3 before when it was announced at E3, Sony put an Nvidia GPU in it that was the power of 2x Geforce 6800 Ultras - Now back then pricing wouldn't have been too much different.

xxYetterxx
xxYetterxx

@FuZzCasT 16GB there is no chance at all.  I could see 12GB of DDR3.  And the Titan graphics card?!? Do you want this console to cost 1000$
