Next Xbox will not require Internet connection - Report

Leaked internal Microsoft memo for next-gen platform states system will be "tolerant of today's Internet."

Numerous reports have claimed Microsoft's next Xbox will require an Internet connection to function, but these assertions are false, according to an internal Microsoft memo obtained by Ars Technica.

"Durango is designed to deliver the future of entertainment while engineered to be tolerant of today's Internet," reads a line from the memo, reportedly sent to all full-time staffers working on the next Xbox.

"There are a number of scenarios that our users expect to work without an Internet connection, and those should 'just work' regardless of their current connection status," it goes on. "Those include, but are not limited to: playing a Blu-ray disc, watching live TV, and yes playing a single-player game."

It is not clear when the memo was sent to developers. A Microsoft representative told GameSpot, "We're excited to share more about the new generation of games, TV, and entertainment on May 21, but have nothing further to share at this time."

Most recently, noted Windows blogger Paul Thurrott claimed the Xbox 720 will require an Internet connection to function, but suggested that the feature "isn't as Draconian as many seem to believe."

Microsoft is widely believed to formally unveil its next Xbox during an intimate event at the company's headquarters in Redmond, Washington on May 21.

This announcement will "mark the beginning of a new generation of games, TV, and entertainment." The event will be streamed through Xbox.com, Xbox Live, and Spike TV in the United States and Canada.

sorry, MS has shattered my confidence in them.  The proof is in the pudding, I will wait until the Xbox one is on the market.  Leaked memos  don't prove MS will not alter what they have said after everyone has purchased the machine.  I will wait

CyhortI82
CyhortI82

Huh, it's almost like all these "reports" are total BS guessing and we should just wait until a system is actually announced before believing every bad thing about it, huh? Oh, wait, that actually makes sense. Lets just go back to being hysterical over things whether we have real proof or not.

Ive come to the conclusion that the gamespot community is at lest 1/2 playstation fanboys.

It doesn't necessarily confirm it wont be always on...

"There are a number of scenarios that our users expect to work without an Internet connection, and those should 'just work' regardless of their current connection status,"

Is just them saying "Our customers dont really want it to be always online" again, it doesn't say that it wont be.

Looks like Adam Orth has to deal with it, eh? I bet it was already implemented but after the uproar it took them a while to remove it so now they can FINALLY deny it.

Since Sim City's release, and more recently the delightfully ignorant twitter comments by Adam Orth, the wave of negative opinion on the "always-on" concept is reaching tsunami levels.

Maybe Microsoft's original idea was for always-on, but they see the writing on the wall. PS4 has already confirmed no always-on, so MS would just be painting a big target on its back if they went with it.

I read it just fine. It was written incorrectly. You cannot `REFERENCE` a system that isn`t out  yet solely based on empty promises. AND, most games that are shared cross platform are better on Xbox 360, but best on high end PCs, I have all of them. Try playing the latest DMC on PS3 and all you get is screen fragmention and blurry background that doesn`t pop in smoothly.  I`ll wait and see for real results before I go willy-nilly with BS claims. XD

Nice! The fact that they had to release a company wide E-mail suggests that this is a new direction and a wide scale Policy change to save their collective hind ends. They couldn't wait to "leak" this Email and I'm sure it's related to the huge backlash they were facing. Score one for Internet backlash!

I'm still waiting for MS to say something about the next xbox that the PS4 doesn't already have

What I want in the new Xbox: 500GB SSD - 16GB GDDR3 ram - Intel Core i7 4th gen CPU - Geforce GTX Titan GPU - Blue Ray drive - Backwards compatibility with original, 360 games and controllers and for it to play PC games to would be nice... *runs*

It never ceases to amaze me how people at MS with such high IQs could be stupid enough not to implicitly understand that always on/anti-used games would be a fucking DISASTER of epic proportions and create such a massive negative backlash that it would likely doom the 720 to 2nd place behind the PS4...or perhaps worse, 3rd place behind even the still-born Wii U.

Understanding that you JUST DONT TOUCH USED GAMES and you JUST DONT REQUIRE PEOPLE TO ALWAYS BE ONLINE should just be AUTOMATIC. These are things you don't even think about implementing they are such obviously bad ideas.

Yet, somehow, MS ALMOST went there. The collective IQ's at that company needed a complete TOOL-SHED in Adam Orth to save them from their own sheer dumb-assery.... lol

My games better WORK if I bring my consoles to places that doesn`t have Internet.

TigusVidiks

Obviously, they decided to back pedal, after seeing the reaction of gamers across the internet after Orth's slip.
I guess the always online idea was orthenised.

Does this rumor mean that the other 40 articles written on gamespot are also rumors that were reported on?

Thanks for the Rumor Mill.  It's been a waste of time.

Than...why the heck did that dude awhile ago say something like, 'Deal with it.'?  Was he just not in the loop?  Wanted to hang himself in the public eye?  I am lost.

We are seemingly slowing down on aggro...come on doesn't this article make you angry? Doesn't it make you angry at the people who told you to buy PS because they said that xbox needed to be always online? Doesn't it make you angry that MS is still lying to you? And the xbox might be still always online or that they removed online and is now on damage control?

Facts? What of it! We have rumours! Okay doesn't it make you angry that we have rumours instead of facts! Or that we have facts but people are still spreading rumours!

Grrr the thought of it all makes me want to HULK SMASH.....

It really does....all this rage...Grrrr...

Y'know what would be nice? To see a memo go out to all devs which states "Games should ship without requiring giant PATCHES before playing - PAY for testing! Fix your SH** before you ship it out you greedy F***s"... THAT would make me interested in a next gen system...

The_Kazekyo

I don't know this so called "leaked email" seems too much directed against the rumors, if it's an email directed to the people that are working on the new xbox why does it speak like they don't know shit about the plans for the console they've been working on for years? Let's be reasonable and wait for May 21.

P.S.: I know asking the people on comment sections to be reasonable is like asking for the impossible to happen but it's worth just to remind.

lol, microsoft had a media shitstorm after the whole "deal with it" fiasco haha, they are desperately trying to win back faith in their new console but it's fairly obvious that micosoft don't give a shit , they didn't change it because they thought it would make the console better, they only have sales figures in mind, their console could be terrible and they wouldn't care so long as it sold well, SONY FTW, long live playstation

kinda still bullshit since I still have to be plugged online to play most of my arcade game titles on XBL Arcade.  If I'm offline, most read as 'trial' rather than full versions.

Who cares. I never considered Xbox a good console, and i'm not going to either.

Plus, no one said Internet isn't going to be forced on you regardless, even if it's not always online, there will still be stuff like forcing you to use online services for certain features, online activations, and the freedom to let developers do what they want.

When MS says they are not going to force you to use the web, they don't maen that publishers won't either.

And from what it looks like, Xbox720 still doesn't offer much in the way of games.

There is also still the matter of used games.

Nope, sorry, it's PC + PS4 this gen again.

Don't tell me MS chickened over their Always-online-always-watching feature on the 720!

Hell no wonder they're behind schedule, they ripped out the always online component from their precious box....Oh and that "internal memo", that's the most flimsy piece of proof anyone can come up with. Cooking it up and paying a company to show it off....sheesh talk about lazy manufacturing of evidence..

Come on MS, Sony is counting on you! At least when EA does something questionable they follow it through!

Don't be chicken!

You need to make a Buck buck buck BUCKACKS!

How could they possibly do anything else after the utterly crazy backlash from the community? Holy crap, people were enraged.

However, they seem to insist that it's coming down the pipes at some point, carefully wording it as "respectful of today's internet".

Well, I hope they and anybody else will realize that tomorrow's internet isn't going to get better. The problem isn't data speeds, which are improving, but coverage and fallouts, which won't improve. Server clusters will continue to crash, angry critters will continue to bite over wires, and we're running out of radiowave spectrum to fit in more data... so yeah... Keep boycottin' dat ex-box.
