Next Xbox spotted on Microsoft employee resume

Lead software engineer says unannounced next-generation platform has "cool new features."

According to the LinkedIn page of a Microsoft employee, the next Xbox will have "cool new features," though these were not shared due to adherence to a nondisclosure agreement.

Videogamer spotted the online resume of a lead software development engineer who claims to be leading the "Video Cognition Xbox team" at Microsoft.

This person's job duties include "video processing for DRM'd content," which encompasses managing the "video processing pipeline for DRM'd videos for indexing into the Xbox video catalog." In addition, this person said he handles "visual processing and scene detection," as well as "feed generation for Xbox Smartglass layers."

A Microsoft representative told GameSpot, "We do not comment on rumors or speculation. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform, but we don't have anything further to share at this time."

Microsoft has not announced its next-generation platform, but the company is believed to reveal this console during an event on May 21.

GameStop CEO Paul Raines believes the console is a "very hot, compelling device," noting that he expects the world to "stand up and take notice" when Microsoft does announce the system.

Always On DRM is not a "cool" new feature.

Oh the new Xbox 720 will have cool new features? I wasn't sure if it would or not, but thanks to this article, I now know otherwise for certain. Thanks, Gamespot, you're a pal.

i dont really mind about the "always online" stuff..  I mean, you guys use your PCs/macs/tablet all the time.. and they are always connected to the internet even if we are not using it... it's really stupid to get upset about having an always online machine while you are using every single day an always connected to the internet machine, which is your PC/tablet..  cmon..

something to be upset about is IF it will indeed block used game, i wont be buying it if it does.. blocking used games is even more stupid, is like givin the customer a slap in the face... though I highly doubt they will block used games...

whatever I'll just wait and see before bashing/praising it... you guys should do the same..

I thought they were going to say the next xbox is going to have no interesting features whatsoever.

Are you kidding me? An entire article just to let us know that some Microsoft schmuck said the next system has cool new features? ...That's it? No elaboration whatsoever? Just..."Joe Bob said it has cool new features. Now here's a bunch of other sentences to make it look like this is a real news article..."

Stupid.

Doesnt matter how many "cool new features" it has. I WILL not buy this product if it always has to have an Online Connection, Period! Microsoft needs to listen. The PS4 will dominate them in this Generation of console if they proceed with this idiotic plan!

Is one of the cool new features the always-on connection? >_>

@Necro_Fear89Write ? Don't be silly, a majority of these "news" are just copy and paste jobs.

All you have to do these days as a reporter / journalist is to subscribe to various news feeds and as soon as something relevant pops up, be it confirmed or just a rumor, you copy / paste it to your employer's news portal too.

So much about professional journalism and verifying "news" before helping to spread rumors.
I think Eddie Makuch's description of News Editor is just fitting - Copy and paste, then edit a bit and call it done.

But as long as it creates enough page hits and traffic, GameSpot and CBS will be happy.
Quick recap example : XBox is a currently "famous" / "hot" topic, there's about 500 comments already, I bet around the 5000-ish but likely more unique page views and some may even click on the advertisements, so this article, be it informative or not was a "success".

@hagens09 Apperently you haven't clicked on very many of Eddie's articles. Well it's not all him, just most of it.

@Gothic-360 I agree with "wait and see" aspect. My concern is that, yes my mac/pc/tablet is always connected. But in the event that its not connected i can still use it, i can watch, play games, type on my pc/tablet if the connection is lost. It appears that you can't do much with the new Xbox if you do not connect. At least that is my quarrel with these latest information that are rumored...

Zerabp

@Gothic-360 I can play the majority of my PC games without an internet connection...

Mkeegs79
Mkeegs79

@Gothic-360 Umm. No. Its easy to get upset about always online when someone like me takes his console with him to various places without internet and the fact that my signal can easily break at home watching netflix on my 360/PS3.

Used games would be bad but personally, I buy all my games new so it won't upset me as much. Everyone has their own poison.

@jmeyer2039 Glad they reached out to Microsoft to confirm that their new system will be rad.  Journalism at it's finest.

@Gazz_mann

in my opinion it did since MS starting charging people to play online. And since the people who bought the console did so they thought they could make the users continuing to buy their product. But now not online making them pay again for playing online but making them have a required connection 24/7. In my way on looking at this why would you pay extra money to play online while you already have internet connection. Gata say im happy i own sony's products.

Cochleadoc

@Mkeegs79 @Gothic-360 Both the "always on" and blocking used games are a no buy for me.  I'm hoping those are both ugly rumors.
