Next Xbox graphics to be on par with Cameron's Avatar?

AMD director reportedly tells OXM that Microsoft's next system will feature beefy GPU tech, hyper-specialized AI and physics.

Source: Content aggregation site Examiner.com, relaying an interview with AMD director of ISV relationships Neal Robinson that can be found in the August issue of Official Xbox Magazine.

What we heard: Nintendo fired the opening shots in the next-generation console war by announcing the Wii U at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, and eyes now look to Microsoft and Sony to see how the two competitors will respond. Industry chatter has been particularly active on Microsoft's next Xbox, though rumors have thus far indicated only that the device will be announced during E3 2012 next June.

AMD thinks James Cameron's Avatar is entirely doable on the next Xbox.

June, of course, is a long way off, but gamers curious about details on the next Xbox may have a bit of gristle to chew on today. Over the weekend, Examiner.com relayed a recent interview in OXM with AMD's Neal Robinson, who said that the next Xbox will be capable of rendering graphics on par with James Cameron's 3D visual opus, Avatar. Robinson reportedly would not say one way or another whether AMD is at work on the next Xbox.

However, he did reportedly go on to note that the next Xbox will boast a substantial improvement to artificial intelligence and physics capabilities. The AMD director said that, for instance, individual pedestrians in games like Grand Theft Auto or Saints Row could have unique reactions to real-time situations. That is to say, when players go on a murderous shooting rampage, pedestrians will apparently scatter in a realistic manner.

The official story: "Neal was just talking with the reporter about the future of console gaming in general," an AMD representative told GameSpot. "Any questions about next-gen Xbox should be directed to Microsoft." Microsoft had not responded to a request for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus: Bogus for now, if for no other reason than the telephone-call-like sourcing of Examiner to OXM to Robinson to, presumably, Microsoft. However, it's worth noting that AMD devised the Xbox 360's graphics chip for Microsoft, and the PlayStation 2's visual processor before that. Therefore, it's entirely within the realm of possibility that AMD will reprise its role as GPU maker for the next Xbox, and therefore, Robinson would be briefed on how that work is coming along.

It's possible that they had the capability to do this over five years ago. These gaming giants are just going to play the market well. We won't be seeing these kind of graphics for another 10 - 15 years.

Didn't Sony say that the PS2 would be on par with Toy Story? Yeah when the system hits we'll look then.

@athenian29 bro dont mean to be rude but i dont give an f about ps4 and i dont care about what u think we all know that microsoft will do a better job then sony cuz all sony think about is money there a good compeny and the ps3 is a good console but i just think that its not better then the xbox360 thats just what i

@edgegaming I'm sure it will - it's the PS4 you should be concerned about.

The "better AI" thing seems like it would be up to the individual game - unlike physic and 3D, that's not something you can have innate hardware support for. I'd also like to know if this comparison - even if it IS fake - includes anti-aliasing. I'm tired of stepladder edges in my games...

i really hope that the new xbox is gonna kick ps3 ass

seriously, I don't doubt games in that quality can become reality someday near, but I want that, if anyone's reading this, realise what it will mean. GOOD games take LONG time to be made, you can't avoid that, so in the next console generation, either big companies (Activision, EA, THQ, Namco-Bandai, Square-Enix, Capcom...) will consume each other to create an ridiculously big company that monopolizes all gaming industry (or almost all), or we'll be stuck with few games every month that aren't worth the effort of waiting. Remember PS2, where awesome games were released almost every week, and in the last months of the year, every day?

lol why does the standard have to be Avatar? It was a mediocre movie at best.

@rarson - that's interesting stuff. i started looking into it all when I read your original comment and remembered the IBM sticker on the Gamecube. its mad to think how much better the technology is today, just a few short years later!

@Frame_Dragger -'is that Rasterization is still going to be used, but with major advances? I'd guess this also bodes well for ray-tracing in the generation after this, and cheaper and more rapid rendering for CG movies?'- Well, a yes, yes, and no. With the right programming, Rasterization can be just as Photorealistic as Avatar, just look at Battlefield 3's Frostbite Engine. Ray-Tracing may finally be used for the next Gen, but if the game needs more power for physics and AI, then they may not want to use ray-tracing. Ray-Tracing is much easyer to program, so I've heard. But CG movies.... well. I don't know why, but they do things the hard way. And, like with Cars 2, they aren't getting any better or more Photorealistic. But I should tell you that I don't know anything about programming, so I'm not 100% sure about all the details.

@metaltorn @gonzalezj1 @pokemonblackftw @Yuck_Too @Frame_Dragger @GamerLegend10 @Hitsuhide @TevoxZi Sorry for bugging you all, But I wanted to show you this. It's a game made by University students, called Reflect: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z27EpDJprQg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qntMz2QPA_E This game is being rendered with Path Tracing! Yes, the game looks grainy, but the fact it's being Path Traced is a HUGE step in Photorealistic games. We get Radiosity, ambient occlusion, shadow, penumbra , Photon mapping, reflection and refraction, all without even programming it. The "noise" or grainyness, is something that can be fixed within 1 to 5 years with faster PCs. For those who don't know, there are mostly 3 types of rendering for polygons: Rasterization, Ray tracing, and Path Tracing. Rasterization is what *ALL* games use now. Ray tracing is slow, but faster then Path Tracing. And Path Tracing is what movies use. Reflect is a HUGE deal, because it took 3 PS3 to Ray Traced one car in 2006: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLte5f34ya8 Now, just 5 years after, we are past Rays and are using Path Tracing! So, if some university students can make a real-time Path Tracing game, with a 2010 PC, then think of what Carmack or Crytek can do with a 2012 Xbox. Imagine what they can do with the faster Rasterization speeds!

sure no problems I was not trying to discuss with or start a war between the consoles, I was doing just a comparison.

GamerLegend10
GamerLegend10

@Hitsuhide "so obviously that forza is going to better, for example if sony launch the gt6 it will be better than forza 4." thats exactly my point..both consoles can match each other with graphics, neither is better as far as the eye can tell. it is your opinion that ps3 exclusives and the ps3 is better than the xbox360 and its exclusives...which is fair enough...but please dont claim (as a fact) that ps3 exclusives are better, because it is only an opinion...that is exactly what starts console wars (as i said in a previous comment). it is pointless to claim that your opinion is right, there is always another opinion which will disagree, this is what starts arguments, which is why it is better to state it as an opinion rather than a fact. thats all, i dont have a problem with your opinion, i was only trying to stop any more arguments from starting :)

Hitsuhide
Hitsuhide

But anyway both consoles are great to expend some time.

Hitsuhide
Hitsuhide

i'm not fan of ps3 but if you look well for both consoles you will see GamerLegend10 that ps3 exclusives are more fun and have better graphics and xbox exclusives is good not awesome compared to ps3 exclusives. And ps3 don´t have many more problems like xbox 360,but one thing I agree is that xbox live online services is better than psn services.

Hitsuhide
Hitsuhide

I have both consoles but i prefer ps3, and forza 4 (i dont know) it's going to be launched now, gt5 was launched in 2010, so obviously that forza is going to better, for example if sony launch the gt6 it will be better than forza 4.

@TevoxZi its sad how some people have to fight against everyone else, even when others are being nice to them...(and yes it is the way your writing...which suggests your overly frustrated for some strange reason) and i agree with Frame_Dragger, your points really are not made very clearly...dont expect us to find hidden messages in your comments.

@TevoxZi i dont know why u r getting annoyed, i wasn't trying to offend you, i was actually agreeing with what u said but adding that consoles also have there benefits. ps. i dont think i read your message wrong...

TevoxZi
TevoxZi

@Frame_Dragger and GamerLegend10 Maybe if you read a little sharper you'd realize I'm actually pointing out that Avatar graphics would pop up on PC way earlier than on console and console graphics are still unsatisfying compared to PCs to say that they'd be better than the current PCs in just about 2 years. It's not me pointing out the obvious, it's you guys simply reading it wrong. As far as budget goes, you can have a better PC at 500e than a PS3 is for at 300e.

GamerLegend10
GamerLegend10

@TevoxZi of course, obviously pc is the best (just so u know, im a console gamer). it depends on your budget but pc's can be built with the latest and the best hardware...whereas consoles keep the same hardware for years...for this reason pc is better than consoles. But not many people can afford expensive pc's and to upgrade them regularly, so consoles are a cheaper alternative which can offer decent performance.

TevoxZi
TevoxZi

@ebonyflame Would also like to note that Assassin's Creed 1 looks better on PC than Assassin's Creed 2 looks on the PS3 and X360. :)

TevoxZi
TevoxZi

@ebonyflame When you play something on 1920x1200, maxed out on PC, you'll realize how much the console graphics actually suck. I mean, I'm disgusted from the fact how they say all the console games are native 1080p, when not all even work in native 720p. Even GTA4 is native 640p, just upscaled to 1080p. HD much? Nope.

GamerLegend10
GamerLegend10

@Hitsuhide no the graphics look the same...im not talking about exclusives (which is unfair to compare) im talking about multiplatform games, which look the same on both consoles. and if i wanted to argue against ps3 exclusive looking better then i would use the example: Forza 4 has even better graphics than gt5...but thats just bound to lead to an argument which would be pointless because both consoles are great...u see, console wars will just go on and on, as soon as they start to settle down someone will start comparing games like my example and then it all starts again. so stop trying to convince everyone that your console is the best (if that is your aim?)...because i can guarantee that if u owned a 360 then u would be trying to convince me now that it is better than the ps3. Its all pointless and it divides gamers up when really we should be united.

Hitsuhide
Hitsuhide

its true GamerLegend10, but ps3 already showed us that his possibilities to do better graphics than xbox is true you can see it in uncahrted 3 and gt5

GamerLegend10
GamerLegend10

@alfaresalasmar actually the graphics for xbox360 and ps3 look exactly the same... And to you and everyone else who is posting similar comments: STOP WITH THE FRIGGIN CONSOLE WARS!!! There a pointless waste of time and energy.

GamerLegend10
GamerLegend10

that would be cool...graphics are not most important, but it is important...and updated AI and physics is always welcome. lets just hope that MS doesn't focus solely on motion gaming (like it has done recently) with the next console

DiscGuru101
DiscGuru101

I still haven't forgotten how the PS2 was supposed to be able to produce graphics on par with Jurassic Park. I'm sure the next Xbox will be a huge leap frog, but not Avatar quality...

Wormkid_64
Wormkid_64

*sigh* People and their graphics addiction. I don't care if my game is me as the green dot,and the bad guys are red dots,if the gameplay is fun,the visuals are trumped. However if the gameplay is bad,but the graphics are great,it's still a bad game. I wish more devs would focus on gameplay rather than graphics or shoe-horning in motion controls.

ebonyflame

@TevoxZi Yes, I have seen Mostof the Avatar film. Yes, I own a fairly porful gaming desktop I built with myown hand 12 months ago (time for a new one). How can I say the things I said about current gaming? Easily. Have you ever played a game called Assassins Creed? Then did you play it's even better looking sequel? How about Mass Effect? It's tremendously better looking sequel? Halo Reach? While it may be true that these games do not quite reach the animated fidelity of Avatar, they do get mighty close with every new iteration. And all this without upgrading or updating hardware beyond new firmware updates and newer and newer graphics engines. Have you not played LA Noire? Forza Motorsport? GT5? Did you see the visual fidelity of the characters? Heavy Rain on the PS3 maybe? How can you look anyone in the face and not say these games are not looking near photo realistic with every new software iteration? Like I said before, by this time next year, console games will more than likely have games that look as good as or even better than Avatar.

@raptures330 - jumping the gun in what way? Next xbox is 1-3 years from public release still. I can all but guarantee that it will be running a version of DX12.

Yuck_Too

@Frame_Dragger Actually yes it does...Gallium Nitride Crystal Growth was the problem and it is the "blue crystal" that light passes though to read the disks. LED is the process...the cyrstal is what it is made out of.

Yuck_Too
Yuck_Too

@Frame_Dragger Did not represent cutting edge?...Sony could not manufacture the blue crystals reliably enough in the beginning which slowed production for all the consortium...and the cost was colossal...that is what bleeding edge is.

KickinIt_ftw

@gonzalezj "I'm still waiting for my PS2 to have Toy Story graphics." ...and I'm still waiting for my Nintendo 64 to have the SGI Terminator 2 chipset. I heard my first claim about consoles hitting James Cameron movie benchmarks when Tupac was still a backup dancer for Digital Underground. I'll believe it when I see it.

Yuck_Too
Yuck_Too

@Frame_Dragger Actually while it is a general statement it is also true. Compare the PS1 to the PS2...the PS2 to the PS3...compare the xbox to the 360 and when you look at the time elapsed to the overall improvement...it holds true. CPUs, GPUs, HDs...package as a whole the capability of hardware doubles every 24-months. Thus it is far from meaningless...even more so when company turns around and says their system will last 10+ years. It might physically be around but that would be like us comparing PS2 specs to the next gen.

When some company comes along and tells me that the licensing conditions will require some degree of innovation and reasonable entertainment for the platform's games, THAT will be a true revolution. Simply constantly beefing up graphics doesn't do it for most discerning gamers, and it shows the lack of creative effort that is really being put in.

it will not be better than Playstation 4 because it will be launched 2014 or maybe in 2016 and Playstation 4 will be launched in 2019 so they will have more time to do a better platform.

PFFFF, to get similar performance on a PC is pricey even if you build it yourself, no way is that coming to home consoles and at a reasonable price. You thought 599 US DOLLARS was bad, you haven't seen anything yet if this is what they want to do. Let's not forget that Avatar is a movie and not a game. Since it's just a matter of playing back some animations and pre-determined camera movement, they could really streamline the graphics rendering, plus it only had to run at the standard 24 fps for film. A game on the other hand has a lot more going on and is expected to run at up to 60 fps, so this supposed system would actually have to significantly exceed the machines used to render the movie Avatar.
