Next Starcraft II due early 2012?

GDC Online: Battle.net project director Greg Canessa hints that next installment in three-part series is 18 months away.

Source: See below.

What we heard: Today at GDC Online in Austin, Texas, Battle.net project director Greg Canessa took the stage to talk about the future of the encompassing online service Battle.net. Following his presentation--a complete write-up of which can be found here--the former PopCap games executive took questions from the audience.

One inquiry may have led Canessa to tip Blizzard's hand about the release date of the first expansion to Stacraft II: Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm. When discussing such future Battle.net features as trading replays, broadcasting replays, and upgrading profiles, he said they were "a main area of focus we're going to be seeing on the Starcraft [II] side over the next 18 months between now and Heart of the Swarm." (Emphasis added.)

The next Zerg rush might not come until early 2012.

Such a time frame would have the expansion arrive in either March or April, 2012. Heart of the Swarm is the second installment in the three-part Starcraft II saga, the first of which, Wings of Liberty, focused on the human faction. Heart of the Swarm will concentrate on the Zerg faction of the real-time strategy, while the third installment in the real-time strategy trilogy, Legacy of the Void, will focus on the sinister Protoss faction.

The official story: A Blizzard representative stressed to GameSpot that there is no announced released window for Heart of the Swarm. However, he did say that the game would not be featured as part of Blizzcon 2010, which will take place in Anaheim, California from October 22-23.

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus. Blizzard typically takes its time between expansions, as evidenced by the nearly two-year gaps between the World of Warcraft add-ons The Burning Crusade (January 2007), Wrath of the Lich King (November 2008), and Cataclysm (December 2010).

@raptures330 I never said anything about 10 years you did. I only said the development time was WAY longer than 2007-2010. Reread what i wrote if you can't keep it in mind.

@karloss01 I can see how it might take some time. After all, there is much more than just that to be done. They'll have to write another script, create and render out all the cutscenes, as well as making sure that (just like they did with Wings of Liberty) each level is designed as well as possible. Not to mention the unit balance as you progress. If you had Brood Lords three levels in, it would become way to easy, right? It's not just the gameplay itself, but the intricate details behind and around gameplay, that make games like this so great.

@raduciu From 2003-2010 is not 10 years. And development was suspended for 2 years during that. Oh my! Practice what you preach "M8"

i can't see how a campaign will take 2 years to do when they have the majority of the content already down from the first game. i doubt little will change for multiplayer other then more maps and one or two new units.

I should also add that by the time the Starcraft movie finally hits theatres, Blizzards gonna unveil WoW2 in the opening trailers. Droning in yet another unwary generation. Hopefully I'll be six feet under by then, entombed like Tutankhamen with my PC (saved games) and all my hardware in their original boxes 8*]

just to end the argument: "Development of StarCraft II began in 2003; the game was later announced on 19 May 2007 and was released on July 27 2010." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StarCraft_(series) There is also an article confirming this on gamespot but i am to lazy to be bothered right now.

@raptures330 Oh m8.... when did Blizzard or most developers ever announce the game B4 they had already started doing it? "Such is life M8".

@Shadow_Fire41 Dude, right! You have a very valid point.. And thank god for that lol :D.. My mind was warped for a bit, especially cuz no one else was discussing this very clear .. um .. thing. But later I scrolled down (which was beyond me when posting ..after such a trauma!). I mean its kinda cool that no matter many devious descriptives u add to the Zerg, it always falls short. But calling Zeratul & his boys "Sinister"?? Just like that? Lol.. Ouch!!

@raduciu "Blizzard Entertainment unveils long-awaited sequel to PC real-time strategy game at worldwide invitational event." * News - * Posted May 18, 2007 11:02 pm PT Quote myself: Wasn't this game announced in 2007? Oh dear. Dear oh dear. Hmm... "M8" I guess they did announce it in 2007... Such is life "M8"

i dont mid w8ing for the expansions. since most of this game is about multiplay, story dose not concern me that much. i mean, it will be great to stock up on more achievements, see what else did go wrong with the galaxy, see who lives, who dies, will u save Kerigan or kill her, not a big point for me right now, but all in all i play it for the multi and i will gladly w8 for exps. im in no rush to spend more money on this game. :)

@AvatarCloud I would rather get a well polished release than a skimped off one. Blizzard always delivered good products so imo it's worth the wait.

@raptures330 M8 do your homework before you post such comments. There are some articles around gamespot that could enlighten you if you'dd care to know more.

What is all this talk about 10 year development? Wasn't this game announced in 2007? Last time I checked we are a bit off from 2017. And if you people mean the gap between releases it is more like 12 years... since maths don't seem to be their strong suit a year can just add up as 6 months so you won't notice the long release window...

2012 for the next expansion? that seems a bit much, i mean for WoW i can understand that cause a MMO is damn huge, especially WoW, but this is a RTS, much smaller game.

Shadow_Fire41

@Andaleeb notice how they said Faction, maybe they are referring to the psycho protoss that Raynor and Zeratul fought (the green and black ones) if not...........im with you on what you just said.

So 2012 for Heart, 2014-15 for the Protoss? Give me a break.

I sure hope it comes out sooner than that. I thought Blizzard was going to do the trilogy in yearly installments.

This means D3 is up for early 2011, or just late 2011

expansions should have come out on a yearly basis atleast. Within which D3 should be out. Followed swiftly by the Warcraft movie. Leading to the next Warcraft saga. Then more expansions. And finally the Starcraft movie. By then my nephew will be a college graduate. He'll get a job at Blizzard. And I'll be the King of the World.

Blizzard really needs to lose the "we'll release it when we want because we pwn you" attitude real fast. 2012 for a freekin expansion? That's so stupid on so many levels

"while the third installment in the real-time strategy trilogy, Legacy of the Void, will focus on the sinister Protoss faction." ..? Did I read this right? Have I completely missed the plot of the game?? :O

the fans are RAGING BLIZZARD! not only here in Gamespot even on other gaming websites! Expansion for 18 months? and another for Legacy of the Void? Cmon! Protoss are my Favorite race and i think im gonna go sick of waiting for it or loose interest of it completely, Cmon Blizz! Come On! me and my friends are disappointed... But if only the Rumor is true, check the other videogame websites, fans are screaming!

eriktkire

@jumpy46 "should".. but what are the chances of that? I'm betting these SC expansions will follow the same price tag structure of the WoW expansions (when new), maybe $10 more... with the collectors editions being as highly priced as possible in the market standards for that particular year. They'll be great for sure, but its not like this is the Sistine Chapel being painted by one master artist. 10 years already and the expansions they had already planned for are still going to take years to release??? Game developers really need a reality check and to learn how to work within realistic deadlines like every other aspect of the creative/entertainment industry. SC2 is great, but its no revelation for an entire culture to revere.

@Nodashi -_- and I just read what I wrote and realized there were quite a few grammatical errors in my previous message...but considering the amount of Rum I ingested, I think it a marvel that I can write at all.

dagrimmreepa
dagrimmreepa

@Nodashi Hahah lol dude, no, check the dictionary: the "official" translation is "implied malevolence", which, if you study it, is exactly the same as what I was saying.. except the dictionary seems more intent on taking the, so-called, victims's POV (implied), while I more lean towards the "perpetrator's" POV (hiding true intentions), either way, it's the same thing. I guess I just lean more towards the Bible's definition of the term, which is pretty weird in itself, considering the fact that I'm not religious.

i think was Blizz did was great. If they infact couldn't create the 76 mission long campaign at once, and even if they did. its a good move. somtimes you play a game and you get this sense of "End" and every mission between that feeling and the end is rushed and unappriciated. dividing the game into 3 parts (that are not so far apart btw) lets us get "Re-interested" in the plot, and recharge our Campaign-Batteries. If as a Diablo fan i would have heard that 18 months after D3 i would've gotten a part 2 with 4 more acts? and then another 4 more 3 years from there, i would NEVER complain.

Richardthe3rd
Richardthe3rd

It makes sense. Dragging out the expansion will increase demand. At the same time, 10 years development time is ludicrous. The game is polished, but I don't see anything that should have taken 10 years. Just drop the CGI cutscenes and speed the dev cycle up to maybe 6 years between IP installments and everyone, including Blizzard's bankers, will be happier.

The additional campaigns should all be add-ons that cost way less than $60.

I won't spoil anything, but wouldn't what happened at the end of Wings of Liberty sort of make the Zerg Campaign a bit boring?
