Next Mortal Kombat movie planned for 2013 - Report

New Line Cinema working on new feature based on Warner Bros. division's gory fighting franchise; Web series director Kevin Tancharoen to helm film.

by

It turns out the critically reviled Mortal Kombat: Annihilation didn't annihilate the fighting series' filmic potential after all. The Los Angeles Times today is reporting that Warner Bros.' New Line Cinemas division is moving ahead with plans to produce a new Mortal Kombat movie with an eye toward releasing it in 2013.

Lateef Crowder as Baraka in Mortal Kombat: Rebirth.

According to the Times, Kevin Tancharoen has been tapped to direct the film. Tancharoen directed the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Web series, as well as the 2009 dance movie Fame. Joining him on the movie will be his writing partner Oren Uziel. The pair previously worked on Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, a YouTube viral video that sparked the development of Legacy.

The New Line project would be the third Mortal Kombat movie to receive a theatrical release and the first since 1997's Annihilation. The original Mortal Kombat debuted in 1995 to mixed reviews and a reported worldwide box office haul of $122 million off a $25 million budget. Other multimedia Mortal Kombat ventures have included the Saturday-morning cartoon Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm, the TV series Mortal Kombat: Conquest, and even a touring stage show.

The Times reports that Warner Bros. and New Line executives are hoping the movie arrives timed along with a new installment of the Mortal Kombat game. It specifically mentions the prospect of launching the movie at the same time the game debuts or including the movie and game together in a Blu-ray or DVD bundles.

im just worried about the actors. i watched legacy the fight scenes were pretty good, the choreography was somewhat realistic to an extent, not enough to make it boring and not enough to make it to outlandish. i especially liked how they put in the classic MK uppercut. i just want decent portrayals of the characters. they dont have to be A-list actors who barely know how to fight and they dont have to be pro-martial artists who cant act and barely look like the characters they r supposed to be. but somewhere in the middle this movie has a chance of being good.... if they make sequels up to MK3 then Jensen Ackles from supernatural should be type-casted for Curtis Stryker. i think he would be great, fits character perfectly...or maybe thats just me lol

I'm looking forward to another MK film definitely, I just hope they don't cock it up. The webisodes were ok to start with but they soon became utter rubbish and bearing no relevance or resemblance to the actual games or stories imo, here's hoping this will be better

Kool! As long as it's not another Annihilation....excuse me I have to go throw up. Even talking about it makes me sick.

@BONK-: lol I'm not ever sure how to approach this one (you). I got a person here (again, you) trying to debate that Mortal Kombat has a deep story, deep enough for an hour and a half movie AGAIN. What do you say to that? :D

It will be interesting to see what they are going to do with the special effects (if it will be in 3D too is another good question) and so far they said they were going for an R rating.

I liked Legacy although it had a few rough spots some episodes were done really well (Jax & Kano, Raiden, Cyrax & Sektor). and Michael Jai White was awesome as Jax, has to be in the movie.

omg this is great news! 8D i LOVED the first movie (tho the second was really a big let down 8( ) I still remember how excited i was in the cinema watching it, it was the first movie EVER based on a game, to be faithful to its gaming counterpart X]

@ Fernin-Ker Yeah, i know what you mean. I had totally forgotten about Vampire Hunter D, both of those films were pretty good. Appleseed is another good one. I think an Anime MK could be done well, just look at Batman: Gotham Knight. And please don't remind me about the G4 series..... I had them set to record on my DVR for about a month until I just gave up. There are few Anime series that I love, but even with them the movies are usually better.

@BloodMist Shippuden is actually not bad and they're getting a bit better at plot writing. SatAM cartoons are just as bad to be honest!

@Fernin-Ker Oh there's no doubt, the vast majority of the most popular anime out there these days is complete crap, like Naruto, and the truly excellent stuff is always much less commonly heard of.I totally agree with everything you said, especially about the god awful Marvel anime that are absolutely pathetic.

@Gravity_Slave What do you mean no storyline? you played the new one right? if that's not a storyline then i don't know what is.

Oh god please don't mess it up :( I want a movie just like rebirth and not legacy. Rebirth was dark gritty and actually a great take on the franchise. Legacy was like a bad fan service

@FallenOneX I admit there are certainly a few good ones, Akira and NS are good for sure. Infact now that I think about it the few anime I do like have always been movies, and almost always older. Vampire Hunter D and the like for example. Though Ghost In The Shell does deserve mention of course for being excellent. I suppose rather than anime as a whole, it's specific types I despise, which unfortunately seems to have become popular lately. And for an example of why I am worried and would likely dislike an MK anime, take a look at how they butchered Iron Man and Wolverine with an anime style being put somewhere it DOES NOT belong. You can find the show on G4.

nice. hopefully they keep michael jai white and lateef crowder involved. REAL martial artists that can actually act.

MK is one of those video game to movie translations that just doesn't work...there simply isn't enough story or backround to constitute a movie. Sure you may have a few cool moments, but as a whole, its empty. In the end, its just a fighting game.

NickyWithATicky
NickyWithATicky

@DragonKingEX That makes sense, but I think this movie will just focus on fighting as well. The story isn't really strong enough to hold up a movie so I think this will be fairly simplistic and designed simply to rake in money. It's unfortunate because a lot of fans will probably just be dissapointed. I'm just waiting for a game-based-movie that's actually really good and I think that can only be done with a good story driven game. But I do get what you mean - I've played five Tekken games and I have no idea what the story is, so I'm eagerly awaiting to see the Tekken: Blood Vengence movie (can't find it in the uk yet) to shed some light.

Make it R rated and nothing whatsoever like Annihilation and we'll already be off to a good start.

OMG I needed good news today, and here it is!! Hopefully it would be as good as the first MK movie, and not a legendary flop like MK Annihilation, King of Fighters, Dragon Ball. And HOPEFULLY they will stay faithful to the characters and the storyline...

@ Fernin-Ker Check out all time classic Akira, Ninja Scroll, and the Street Fighter movie. The SF V series is ok, but the movie is excellent. Even the DMC series was decent. I'm not trying to say you're wrong for not liking Anime, but I will agree that there are a ton of it that doesn't go along with most American tastes.

I also think Paul W. S. Anderson should do the movie since he did the first one, but i guess he is too busy with Resident Evil movies, which i still love. Either way, still cant wait.

Robin Shou should take a role in it or he should at least make a cameo (like Lou Ferrigno did in those new Hulk movies)

@NickyWithATicky Well fighting games are all about the fights, not so much of a story in terms of other genres where the story is the main focus of the game. So there's no need to make movies about a story that already being told. My opinion anyways

leeko_link

I'll be interest in this movie just as long as they don't turn it into another King of Fighters, Tekken, or Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li which likely they will. Don't turn Liu Kang and Kung Lao into white guys, don't turn Raiden and Shao Kahn into brothers, don't turn Scorpion and Sub-Zero into Shang Tsung or Quan Chi's b*tches (they should be against Quan Chi or Shang Tsung, not bowing to them), etc.

NickyWithATicky
NickyWithATicky

Why??? So many games with really good and interesting plots, and yet they so often choose fighting games to make movies of. I don't get it! It looks like this will be a money-spinner, pure and simple.

Well Mortal Kombat is a great fighting game series that seems to have inspired other forms of MK pop culture entertainment. Usually there is a movie then a movie tie in Videogame is made. Not the other way around.

I hope it's rated 18 and they just go all out on violence/gore/sex etc. With the right director/actors and todays tech it could be a killer film.
