Next LOTR game unveiled by Warner Bros.

Publisher crafting first Lord of the Rings game, subitled Aragorn's Quest; "kids and families" target market, unveil set for E3.

2003's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Pandemic Studios' Lord of the Rings: Conquest probably wasn't what most fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy universe were hoping for when it launched earlier this year. In March, Variety reported what very well may have been the reason for the game's shortcoming. The trade said that Electronic Arts' license to make games based on director Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films expired on December 31, 2008--just two weeks before Conquest shipped to stores.

At the time, Variety reported that rights to make games based on the franchise had reverted back to Warner Bros. Now, it appears as if the first project to come of that move will be The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest. The game was revealed as part of an Electronic Entertainment Expo "first look" lineup sent out by event organizers at the Entertainment Software Association to media outlets, including GameSpot.

1977's The Hobbit.

A brief description of Aragorn's Quest makes it sound closer to the 1977 Rankin-Bass animated version of The Hobbit than the 2001-2003 live-action films based on Tolkien's later trilogy. According to WBIE, the title will be "the first Lord of the Rings videogame created specifically for kids and their families."

The game sees players taking control of the titular hero during his journeys to protect the ringbearers on their quest to destroy the soul-corrupting One Ring and vanquish the evil Dark Lord Sauron. The apparently cheery game will feature "a friendly, colorful rendition of Middle-Earth" and see players engaging in sword fights, lancing, and archery.

Unfortunately, the brief blurb did not indicate which platforms Aragorn's Quest would ship for, nor did it provide a release window. Warner Bros. Interactive had not responded to requests for additional information as of press time, though the game is expected to be on hand at this year's E3, which runs June 1-4.

WB must be made of a bunch of frikkin idiots. Thanks for ruining this. This will also make LOTR games look bad, killing the chance of there being any more LOTR games (other than BFME 3). So you can probably say goodbye to Fallout-like rpg White Council.

I enjoyed the third age on the gba and ps2, and would like to see another game like it. But this... this is not going to go well.

Quit raping the masterpiece that was crafted by J.R.R. Tolkien with the making of a "kids and family" LOTR game.

BFME 3! SO much more could be done with that than a "family" game.

@Glade_Gnarr im not really rating it on kiddy or not, i just dont see how they gonna pull of LOTR on a kiddy level, its just contradicting in my opinion

What happened to this industry? I remember a time when the games were rated by good or bad and not by kiddy and mature, of course, back then kiddy games could be good too.

I used to mock EA, but now, it seems they were winners compared to this FAILure of a reimagination. Conquest is a beauty, compared to this hideous concept. LOTR was never designed for pansies in the first place. I don't get it. Aren't the EA LOTR games suitable for children and their families? I have a bad feeling this will turn out for the DS. And LOTR: Aragorn's Quest? It's so original that I want to cringe.

Epic suck. It's like they're trying their hardest to make something amazing into something ridiculous.

Huh...kids and families, I wonder if Wii's going to pick it up, ;-)

We really don't need another LOTR game, especially an "apparently cheery" one made just for kids "and their families" (like the horrible animated Hobbit, come on).

*Facepalm* They just don't get it do they? A kid's game about cloaked, undead soul-eaters chasing a midget? Pah. Tolkien is rolling in his grave. I never thought I'd say this, but... EA FTW... Yay... =( BTW, as if GS have to guess the platform.

And now it begins, the spin-offs and mess ups of games that ruin some of the greatest books and movies of all time. They should of moved on after conquest but obviously they didnt see that that was almost as bad as this sounds. The greatest LOTR games were the BFME and the original games that ran with the films.

Seriously sounds like the worst kind of LOTR game. I wish that 'White Tower' or something like that, hadn't been cancelled.

sounds like its will be the biggest fail of a game ever!

MaxoidRodi

Why would kids want to play a LOTR game? Most of them probably don't understand the books or the movies... I hope WB comes to their senses and release a mature game sometime...

BonsaiMagpie

I think this is going to be a total flop. The story just doesn't lend itself to a child's game. I think this use of Tolkien's books and the sucess around the following works is just cheap. If they want to use some of the scenarios but make a totally different story use a different name. If they want to use the storyline but tone down the violence I'd happily let them use the LoTR name, but probably wouldnt buy the game.

Hey least EA made matured games... All warner is going to do is make Kiddy games called Aragorns quest or Golums fishing challenge

tomrocks666

what the hell?! why cant u just remake conquest and make it good, and violent :D none of this kiddy crap, i mean come on if u want to make kiddy crap just make it a Wii exclusive.

I'm quite disappointed that we won't be seeing another Lord of the Rings game like Battle for Middle Earth or Return of the King (Game). Those games were very good, but the other LOTR games are pretty average or just bad completely.

Give as many thumbs down as you want and then look up all the Fifa results for pc, look up how much rating NFS Undercover got and then look up what happened to Terminator Salvation.

onikrulz

We'll have to dream on guys, since when did developers listen to us anyway. Look at EA, they give the same FIFA to pc gamers every single year. Look at NFS, Terminator etc etc

BelaidKL

honestly, i think they should remake 2 and 3 to next gen style eg bigger battles, destrucive environments etc

Kid's game...... Seriously I dont want to see the Interactive Entertainment industry being humiliated and treated like kiddy stuff again. Parents used to look down on gaming saying its for children. Let a kid play Assassin's Creed or GTA IV or Crysis then see if its for kids. Now what is WB making this a kids' game for? We dont want games to be treated like kids stuff

Barighm
Barighm

Awww...was hoping for some kind of game that focused on Aragorn's life; his travels, his adventurers, his battles...that sort of thing, before the Lord of the Rings (and maybe including LotR). Now that would have been something.

onikrulz
onikrulz

Ha ha ha you've got to be kidding me, even Conquest with higher textures and a lot more moves + animations would have become a hit. I expected Warner Bros. to give us a real next-gen/HD Lord of the Rings maybe like Fallout 3 and Oblivion style RPG or single player with perfect graphics and animations and huge battles rendered in real time instead of old-gen-like battles with entire armies stuck in the background like Conquest. We want a real LOTR game that looks good, feels good and plays good. If you dont copy the movies for the game's layout dont forget what made the movies popular - THINGS WE LIKED!
