Next-gen Star Wars: Battlefront due in summer 2015

EA CFO Blake Jorgensen says new game from DICE will "most likely" debut around same time new movies release in two years.

by

The all-new next-generation Star Wars: Battlefront game from Electronic Arts and developer DICE will "most likely" release in summer 2015 alongside the new films, CFO Blake Jorgensen said today during EA's annual stockholder meeting.

Jorgensen said the Battlefront series, in the past, has performed "extremely well."

Beyond a brief teaser trailer for the game at E3, EA and DICE have remained quiet on what the new Star Wars Battlefront game will offer. EA Games executive Patrick Söderlund said last month that EA and DICE are conceiving the project as a "rebirth of the brand."

DICE's new Star Wars: Battlefront game is one of multiple Star Wars titles EA currently has in development as part of its exclusive deal with brand owner Disney. Dead Space studio Visceral Games is also working on an all-new Stars Wars title, though no details are available about this project.

This had better not be a next-gen exclusive.

"Jorgensen said the Battlefront series, in the past, has performed 'extremely well'". The KotOR series, at least the first one, has performed extremely well too, so why don't you give us a Star Wars RPG. It doesn't have to be KotOR, just give us an RPG with a Star Wars setting. I'd kill for (and thus turn to the Dark Side) for a another Jedi Knight game or similar, as well.

Isn't BioWare also making a new star wars game?

This better be a great game. SWBF 1 and 2 are two of my favorite games so if this sucks I'm gonna be super pissed.

Wow, that's a long time, but it'd probably be worth the wait.

I never really liked Star Wars but I kinda liked the battlefront series played it a bit on my PSP and enjoyed as I liked the concept of it. With it coming to the next gen consoles I can see it having extremely large scale battles with great detail in the terrain, maps, vehicles etc. Something like 50 vs 50 mulitplayer or more O_o. Anyways I know there ain't really any details yet but it could turn out to bbbbbe pretty epic even for non star wars fans like myself.

Please be good. Battlefront 1 & 2 were such great games, spent many hours playing with friends. Great times.

This worries me. Only a year after Battlefield 4 leads me to believe it really will just be Battlefield in space. It's looking like they're just going to ride the hype of the new movies as a way of increasing sales, and that's never a good thing.

What is EA/Dice up to?

Good news. That means DICE will take their time. So it's most likely:

2013: Battlefield 4

2014: Mirror's Edge 2

2015: Battlefront 3

And they say the new SW flick is currently being filmed under the code name "Foodles"

I'm really scared...i'm scared that they'll milk it to death and spam it with microtransaction and DLC...Battlefront is my fav game of all time :S.

2015 release is fine by me. They need to make Force Unleashed 3 so they can finish the story.

Repost this in two more years and I'll pretend to give a damn then ;3

They need to limit the action to episode 4,5,6. The prequels were horrible. No playable Jedi is also important.

"Beyond a brief teaser trailer for the game at E3, EA and DICE have remained quiet on what the new Star Wars Battlefront game will offer." Well it will offer everything the old ones did + more...we know it will have space battles, and foot, and vehicles...we know this because SWBF2 did...

I hope it will be in the Old Republic era..

I'm not going to lie, I'm not a massive fan of Star Wars. I watched Episode I and hated it and everyone said it was the worst but it kind of ruined most of the rest of the franchise for me. The games on the other hand look pretty good.

But my lack of enthusiasm for the franchise and the fact this is going to have EA on the box turns me right off unfortunately. After playing Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age Origins and being severely disappointed in both I'm avoiding Bioware and EA like the plague from now on.

@ManHooYin The PSP version was good, but trust me, your not doing the series justice till you buy BF II on the PS2 and play it. IDK how you viewed the PSP game but if you played it and even figured, hey this games not bad, it's like a 6, the PS2 version will be like OMG... this games like a 9. Personally I would give it a 10, but I'm just giving an example there.

@SmAsHtheHumannormally people "tease" a game to see the fans reactions. They like to see if people are going to buy the product before they even waste time making it.

@DarthAsheron Wasn't Battlefront 1 and 2 just Battlefield in space? In a good way, as in taking the good things from BF2 and making it Star Wars?

Riding the hype train of the movies sound like a really good thing from a PR perspective, the marketing for each will benefit the both.

@R4gn4r0k And which has been proven before, not all of Dice will work on just one game. Dice is big enough to have 2-3 teams (at least) working on separate projects. This late date at least suggests no quick cash-in.

NoahRoalson

@Don_Mattrick That is exactly what I'm worried about. Unfortunately, I won't be surprised when it happens either.

Hurvl

@TheLazyClown I want to play TFU 1 and 2 from what I've heard of the Force powers and other stuff, but the PC versions seem to be mediocre. There is no mod scene either to fix what the devs didn't fix.

@krienie most likely not it seems to be Hoth... Maybe they do it like they did in the second Battlefront and split the times up.

@Dannystaples14 "I watched Episode I and hated it and everyone said it was the worst but it kind of ruined most of the rest of the franchise for me."

Funny, As a huge Star Wars fan myself, I've found it to better then episodes II and III....

@Dannystaples14 Ea doesnt make games... Ea consists of a lot of developers, Dice is one of the better ones

DarthAsheron
DarthAsheron

@Hurvl Apart from Battlefront  having a Third-Person option and many more game modes and such to choose from.

I'm afraid Dice is just going to reskin Battlefield 3/4 into Battlefront. A near Call of Duty Clone with larger maps, excessive bloom, lens flare, and color grading.

Not to mention high priced DLC. Something like $10-15 for a couple new maps and weapons, yet not new real content.

These things may not happen, but with EA being the publisher I am almost certain it will.

Hurvl
Hurvl

@NoahRoalson @Don_Mattrick Will you be surprised when it doesn't happen then? Or will you just wait for your fears to become true with another game?

SpazldNinjaDude
SpazldNinjaDude

@RPG_Fan_I_Am @SpazldNinjaDude And then it will be a fail of galactic proportions and no one will buy it. Or I hope they won't.....it must be a massive flop if it's not got better features than SWBF2.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@Mantan911 It doesn't stop their influence slowly decaying a game from the inside out until it is a linear, crappy piece of trash. with £120 worth of DLC out for it.

SpazldNinjaDude
SpazldNinjaDude

@Mantan911 But they are still owned by EA. And they force the devs to do things, if they don't they will be shut down.

What's your issue with DICE? You couldn't ask for a better developer to mantle the Battlefront series, which is basically based on the Battlefield serise with a Starwars theme.

I always dreamed of DICE developing it as the originals were far from the epic SW FPS big battle game it aimed to be.
DICE has all the economic muscles, thechnical know how and skill to pull this off.

skywalkerforce

@SpazldNinjaDude @SmAsHtheHuman @krienie Let's all remember that DICE is doing this and unless their hearts are in the right place, it just isnt going to be good. FPS in space is what Im feeling here. I dont like it. Im not even going to consider buying this game until I get some gameplay footage infront of me.

@SpazldNinjaDude @Mantan911
EA shutting down DICE? HAHA! That would be the day EA becomes completely irrelevant as a publisher.

DICE is bringing in the big bucks for EA and has a lot of room to engage in projects they preffer,i.e. Mirrors Edge.
