New York Comic-Con: Jumpgate Evolution

If you've been toying around with the idea of getting into an MMO, but you can't stand the idea of running around in a pair of silly medieval trousers or slaying an orc with a wooden kitchen knife, Jumpgate Evolution may be the game for you. It's an MMO set in space, but it's also a dog-fighting game where you take control of your own thoroughly customized spacecraft. It's built in the image of old-school space flight games like Wing Commander, and offers an easy learning curve that won't present players with too many flight mechanics or complex techniques.

We've covered the game several times before, but the above video comes direct from this weekend's New York Comic-Con and features a member of the NetDevil development team guiding us through the game. Give it a watch so you can have a look at the vibrant graphics in motion. They're pretty slick. For more on Jumpgate, see some of our previous coverage . No official release has been announced, but the game is currently in friends and family beta testing.

In the long run I belive this game might get boring cause its very simple?...

What I really love is flying through space while getting hammered by flak cannons of a really large frigate while almost getting a shot from an ion beam from a friendly vessel. That was really humbling...

They should revive the freespace franchise. I love how the story progresses and the graphics is amazing in it's time. Why don't they revive this anyway? They manufacture guitars, drums, steering wheels, boxing gloves and other stuff and they can't create a joystick? It the space flight sim genre dead? Must I subscribe to eve online just to get my fix on a space flight sim experience?

Totally agree with ShimmeringSword if your gonna make a spac mmo based off classics like wing commander and the others don't just make it dogfights online. It looks way to simple.

Eve online is stupid as there is zero skill involved and levelling up is based on clicking a skill and letting it finish so you have no control over the speed of the game and your development. It's design to maximize the time and therefore subscription money you give them. This feels like an arcade game from this video, if its free online id play it.

I doubt thats the in game music, more likely just layed over for this vid. Looks a bit too dumbed down for me though, I like my space games complex, but if the mmo and fleet options are deep enough it might stand a chance.

Lmao@eve online, that steaming pile was good once, now it's all about who has the best gear; officer gear > all, and it has never been about player skill. The original jumpgate was around 2 years before eve and is still running now, but it has never gotten a great deal of publicity. It is a twitch based game, where player skill is the most important factor in combat, with a decent Newtonian physics model. Evolution is just that, an evolution of the original that started life as a graphics update, but expanded in to a completely new game set in the old game universe. You don't have to worry about depth as the original has loads and many ideas eve incorporates now were first seen in Jumpgate years ago.

I'd have to agree with salman06p0020 on the music...but i never listen to the ingame music for any game, so it's not an issue for me. But i don't know how you can judge the A.I. from that clip. If that's the first thing that any noob is going to be wandering into right off, it had better be easy or they're just going to quit.

I agree with Qect, this game is nothing like EVE Online. EVE is more than a point in space and shoot-em up game. This one seems interesting. Will give it a look when it comes. But i'm loving eve for now.

salman06p0020, I agree that music sounds like it belongs on some old cheesy coin-op game. From what little i've seen this game seems to lack depth.

Bad A.I. And whats with that music? Graphics are good though. A different type of MMO is always welcomed.

I am going to keep track of this one. It seems to be very interesting.

it's made by NetDevil? They also made Warmonger which was fantastic for a free game, if thats so I might need to pay more attention to this one...

Doesn't look that cool. If your looking for a game like this, check out Eve Online ( trial.eve-online.com ). Much cooler, and on a HUGE scale! Been playing for 2 years now, and I'm still loving it!

looks even sharper since the last time i saw the gameplay video on E3. and some ppl are comparing this to AirRival? HAHAHHAHAHAAA.... i'm sorry but the korean company which handles AirRival now does not recognize the existence of non grind MMO, period. I don't even need to check the graphics or Jumpgate's previous credential to know they will be better than AirRival or ANY other korean mmo thanks.

Seen the name of the game around, but haven't really checked it out. Piqued my curiosity to say the least...I'll be keeping my eye on this one.

This game would be good if it had an element that was spaceships but had other things built into it as well...i bet this gets really boring really quickly.

In EVE you don't fly your space ship, you click on your opponent and you watch as you kill them. EVE is more of a strategy game. Jumpgate Evolution is an action game. It's not new idea, it's a sequel to the first Jumpgate, which came out years ago. From what I can tell, it'll basically be the same game with better graphics on a larger scale.

looks exactly like AirRival .. which is a f2p game ..

Is EVE online twitch based now, you can use joysticks and fight like FPS? Whoa they really changed over the years. Havnt played Eve in years but if its like this im checkin it out. thanks man.

Nice, I was already thinking that no space action games will be ever created. :)

This looks really great, but the fact that it would require a subscription to play is actually a deal-breaker for me.

LOL! They actually bared the name Jesus from being a user name! Buddah is fine, Allah is fine too. It's true what the scriptures say. As long as you don't talk about Jesus, the devil says "Your fine.".

love the fact that this is twitchy combat in an MMO setting. I love MMO's but dicerolling has been beaten to death. this will really pit skilled people against each other as opposed to...well how MMO's work.

Kougeru: i'm not saying your wrong, but even if that may be. the dogfighting in air rivals still appears a lot more exciting (clearly, graphics aside) and fast paced than the flying/fighting they show in the video above. i did say if they took CONCEPT...just the dogfight concept, and integrated it into this game in their way, it would be way cooler.

It looks alright. Pretty cool. I don't really like MMOs so much though. The whole subscription-idea turns me off.

Probably stick with Air Rivals; unless it is free to play, which I doubt.

I may not buy this game as I plan to stick with World of Warcraft and perhaps The Old Republic when it releases, but this looks like a very daring effort by the developers. Kudos to them for trying something new and best of luck in their future endeavors.

Kougeru

airnubsandwich's suggestion of air rivals=fail. he mentiond it was a grinder but that was an understatement. it's probably the largest grindfest game out there, and to do decent in pvp you need to grind literally months to catch up to everyon else. oh and it's not skill based...it's level and gear based...like every other mmo

nubesandwich

ahhhhhhh. i don't know. it looks beatuiful..........but... it should be even MORE fast paced. i don't see how you need much skill. the pvp section was empty as well. didnt see much. i'm still not sold. if you want a good space shooter, go for a free mmo air rivals. its a grinder, but so so much fun, and it takes skill. if the guys that made this game jumped on the concept of that game, took it, and made it better. i dont think we'd ever need to play another game again.

Waza19

Gelugon_baat EVE online is a great game with more depth then any mmo there is out there, it may be slow paced for a lot of people and not even understandable for a lot of people too but still this game deserves more credit then it has, when i look at jumpgate i wish eve would play like that tough, so if their able, and that I doubt, to but as much depth has there is in EVE just there they might bump EVE or just being epithet has a rip-off
