New Wolfenstein is around 20 hours long if you collect everything

"But there's also lots of incentive to make a second playthrough," developer says; studio has "lots of ideas for a sequel."

Upcoming first-person shooter Wolfenstein: The New Order will take you around 20 hours to complete if you collect everything and explore all the environments the game has to offer. MachineGames creative director Jens Matthies revealed the figure today during a Reddit AMA session.

Matthies also pointed out that Wolfenstein: The New Order (which does not have a multiplayer mode) will encourage you to play through the game again, "especially to explore the alternate timeline," he said. He went on to say that early on in the game players will make a choice that will open up an alternate timeline which "changes the vibe of the story."

"It's recommended to do a second play through and see what would have happened if you chose differently," he said. It's unclear how the paths differ.

Also during the AMA, Matthies addressed the possibility of making a sequel to Wolfenstein: The New Order. Though nothing is decided yet, he said he would "love to do a sequel," or even an Enemy Territory-style multiplayer game.

"But MachineGames will never make both at the same time. We find that the best possible results come from having the whole team focused on a singular experience for the duration of the project," he said.

"We have lots of ideas for a sequel and we'd love to do one," he added. "It hinges on the financial success of this one, of course."

Matthies also revealed during the AMA that the PC version of Wolfenstein: The New Order allows "complete key binding freedom."

Wolfenstein: The New Order launches May 20 for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. Preordering the game will guarantee you access to the upcoming Doom beta, though it will be available only on the Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Up until now I only heard rumors about this new technology allowing you to bind your keys on PC. The future is here.

Hopefully, I need some clarification on this article.  What do they mean when they say "...is 20 hours long"?  Surely, this does not mean there is only 20 hours of gameplay for a $60(I'm assuming) game...

May have to get this for my PS4 if it turns out to be good, the previews have been cool so hopefully it turns out to be worth it.  Would get it on PC but my PS4 needs a game and Watch Dogs is being saved for PC.

i was looking forward to   this game  but because of the i7 cpu requirment i may not  bother buying it. are they trying to not sell pc versions of this game? not everybody has an i7 cpu (most ppl i kno have an i5 or some amd model cpu...is there even an i7 equivalent amd cpu? ) Anyways i ll have to see if the i7 is a requirment or suggestion... does anybody kno?

As long as they stick to the roots of Return to Castle Wolfenstein then i got a serious gamer's Boner!

Im looking forward to this game I know I was in the minority of really enjoying the last Wolfenstien but I hope it doesn't stray to far from it.

Ref length 20hours is pretty decent for an FPS though with no multiplayer it couldn't be any less.

At least it has a decent lenght (15h+). That's something for our times where the majority of the FPS's are under 8 hours.

I'm not sure I like the sound of this game if that's a feature you're touting around.  What does that mean?  PC games have had that for as long as I can remember.  That should be a requirement, not a feature.

vicsrealms

I think I will wait for a review to get an idea of its real length before I buy it.  FPS games have kind of been a huge disappointment over the years with extremely short campaigns.

pizzaman107

Meaning its more like 7-10 hours for the casual gamer.

NEVER trust a dev/pub anticipated playthrough length. They are always bloated to an extreme degree. Just as a latest example, Sony claimed a 30-hour playthrough of Infamous Second Son, and I 100%-ed it in 12. I anticipate this game will be no more than 10-12 hours, even with exploring and collecting. And, like Infamous, a second playthrough will yield extremely minor differences, at best.

Awesome, wish a co op mode comes out in the future, I can see a good possibilities for it.

If you haven't played Return to Castle Wolfenstein I absolutely recommend playing that game its a classic available on Steam! Hope Wolfenstein: The New Order turns out to be just as good!

I can't wait. 20 hour game that will be different on a second play through.. thank you! Glad to see devs taking the time to put out great single player games instead of a quick 4-5 hour campaign that is full of bugs because they just want to focus on the multiplayer component.

I have already pre-ordered this I am tired of Multiplayer fps its about we have a proper single player fps game.

Am I the only one that HATES and LOATHES "Collectibles" in video games?

I mean it was one thing collecting the coins in Mario, but it's REALLY gotten out of hand in most games these days.

Games like Assassin's Creed, Infamous, it seems the developers spend half of the development time/budget/work on putting in "collectibles" which could be used to you know.....actually MAKE more game, more story, more gameplay, something actaully worthwhile and memorable rather then having a ton of useless collectibles that do NOTHING other then give you e-peen status to show off to your friends and say "look how much time I spent wandering around this game looking for useless crap."

It'd be one thing if the collectibles were actually TIED into the game, made logical sense for them to exist, and actually gave gameplay/rewards. IE in an rpg you find a map, then collect "x" items after finding it to discover a new piece of armor, THAT is worthwhile and adds to the game.

People its a fps not an rpg, even if its half that length, you can easily beat at least the first four halos or any other fps in under ten hours.

when was "collect everything and you'll have x hours of gameplay" something to boast about? at least games these days are...mostly honest about their length

mos2000
mos2000

.... If you collect everything.  Which means the game averages around 10 hours.  That's too short now a days.  Why do developers wonder how their profits are swallowed up by used game sales; when they charge $70 for something that can be finished in two days???

I'm not buying this....

In short, it's another milking the cow, run-of-the-mil shooter, designed to collect your chips. No real story, just a lot of oooh, aaaaah.

Aelfredus

I'm hoping this game will not have more than one ending. I hate having to play through a game differently only to see other endings (yes, I'm looking at you Dishonored).

I'll replay a game only if I liked it enough.

20 hours of gameplay for 60 dollars. No sorry try again. This article seems to be litter with excuses to attempt to justify the 60 dollar cost. I recommend to wait until this game hits the value bin.  On a side note, probably be best to STOP DOING CGI TRAILERS and use those funds towards developing the dam game.

spacecadet25
spacecadet25

This game looks very visceral.  Hopefully it delivers what it seems to promise.  Based on the trailers, the last time I've seen FPS this visceral and smooth was in FEAR 2 & FEAR 3.  Hope they can even top that!

Garm31

This game looks awesome. Lets hope this is start of the return of the classic, lengthy, singleplayer, FPSs of old. This is the true successor to Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I'm sure the former Starbreeze guys won't let us down.

@doktron  It's a I7 930 or a 1090t equivalent. Neither of them is very powerful. What is your CPU?

okant
okant

@doktron  There's more to CPUs than just saying it's an i5 or i7. The numbers following that are the interesting ones that people tend to forget.

Anyway, a minimum GPU requirement of GeForce 460, which is a card that was released early 2010, makes me think they probably mean one of the older Intel i7's from around that time too.

gokartmozart89
gokartmozart89

@dalepickstock  20 is exceptionally long by today's standards. CoD:MW, and even Halo 3 to some extent, seemed to have started a trend last gen of making 8-12 hours acceptable. For $60 I'd rather get a nice, long campaign with lots of replay value (guns blazing vs stealth help in Wolfenstein's case). A nice story is always a plus, but I expect some campy alt-history from games like Wolfenstein.

gokartmozart89
gokartmozart89

@vadagar1  Coming to the comments section to tell tentative fans of a single-player only FPS about a MOBA isn't exactly going to garner a lot of support. I personally detest DOTA, so you can take your 2k hours and shove it.

gregsuarez-

@jinzo9988  It will probably be like a lot of the Japanese developed console games that get PC ports where the only graphics options are resolution and "Quality" High/Low.

gregsuarez-

@pizzaman107  Not even casual gamers. I got 100% in Infamous Second Son in 12 hours, but Sony claimed it was a 30-hour game. You cannot trust proclamations like this from devs/pubs; they are always heavily inflated.

dalepickstock
dalepickstock

@gregsuarez- Genuine question - not snarky comment but on Infamous did you use a guide or was this a 2nd run through?

12 hours seems short for 100% though must admit ive not played it

u r not the only one who hates collectables in games. I generally ignore them.the only thing i dont mind collecting in games is ammo and health paks(which arnt used all that much in todays games)

@Stiler  I totally agree.  It's a cop-out for making a short ass game.  That's how the sheep that bought the Metal Gear demo try to justify that rip-off.  I don't give a damn about collecting dog tags or data or whatever...

@freedomzealot  This is a lot ex Starbreeze guys, the writer of The Darkness. There will be more meat on these bones than any of those recent 'just here to bolster the MP' campaigns.

djentmaven

@mos2000  so collecting stuff takes 10 hours? doubt it. Sounds like all single player games, take your time, enjoy it, explore you get 20 hours. rush through it as fast as you can 12. I for one am glad they didn't tack on a MP. This game looks great! Grindhouse style

What's also very importantly is that this looks absolutely nothing like Call of duty. COD has ruined the FPS scene. Let's hope this repairs it.

spacecadet25
spacecadet25

@Garm31 I agree we need more lengthy FPS, however I hope they don't start making them long for the sake of long, and they get monotonous.

A very monotonous FPS from years ago that comes to mind is the original Halo.  Yep, probably an unpopular opinion, but one level you moved up to different floors on a tower, and each floor was like exactly the same and the mission took forever, that's when Halo really put a bad taste in my mouth.

@diggyphelps @doktron

i hav an i5 2500k model cpu which is about 3yrs old and has performed admirably so far( i play a lot of graphically intense games like crysis 1,2,3; skyrim; and metro:last light, with everything maxed out getting good framerates and no problems) and i just replaced my GTX570 vid card with a GTX760 (which im quite happy with). So im hoping wolfenstein wont be a problem (or dosent turn out to be a hyped piece of crap).

gokartmozart89
gokartmozart89

@okant  Exactly. A more recent i5 should be capable of running this game. I hate it when they just put iSomething in the spec requirements. It's misleading for people that don't know CPUs, and vague for people that do. It also kinda screws over AMD owners, because they don't know which AMD processor is the right equivalent to the vaguely described Intel one.

unreal849

@Garm31 A couple of COD games were actually good. I actually don't blame the original COD devs; it's not their fault everyone began ripping them off.

@xen0f0rm

The new Order is a very fast paced game. 20hrs is very long. No wonder the game is on four discs on Xbox 360.

Gallowhand
Gallowhand

@spacecadet25 - The original Halo wasn't that long a game.  If I remember correctly I finished the campaign in under 8 hours, and yes, the last few levels were just copy and paste.

I'd love to see a return to 20+ hour FPS games as well.

Garm31
Garm31

@spacecadet25

Half life 2 and RTCW are very long games. The reason why they are so great is that they mixed it up. And most importantly, that make the player want to keep playing with great pacing.

Modern warfare was a great game. Everything that followed it was mediocre. United Offensive fro me is the best game in the series. Some great level design.

@Garm31 @unreal849  My internet was crap when that was popular. The SP was one of my favorite FPS games ever, though.
