New Tony Hawk game is coming to mobile, not console

Legendary skateboarder says new game will launch exclusively for mobile devices later this year.

If you were hoping the newly announced Tony Hawk game would be coming to consoles like the Xbox One or PlayStation 4, sorry, you're out of luck. The legendary skateboarder himself has confirmed in an interview with Bloomberg that the new project is coming exclusively to mobiles.

"We're working on a mobile game now," Hawk said about his partnership with Activision for the new project. "We're working on a game for mobile devices this year."

Hawk reiterated that he's enthusiastic about bringing the new Tony Hawk game to mobile because that's where people today are spending so much of their time.

"We've never gone exclusively that direction yet so I'm excited because, with the amount of time people are spending on their phones and their tablets playing games, we've never had our own game in that space so I'm excited to provide one finally," he said.

The new Tony Hawk game for mobiles won't be the first game in the series for smartphones and tablets, as a port of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 is available right now on iTunes for $2. But from the way Hawk described the new game, it sounds like it's an original title, not a port of a previous game.

Activision has yet to formally announce the new Tony Hawk game, but the publisher told GameSpot earlier this month that it will have more to share on the subject soon.

The most recent game in the series was 2012's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD, which was developed by Robomodo and launched for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. It's unclear which developer is behind the upcoming Tony Hawk game for mobiles.

Games like this is way too hard to play on a phone/ipad etc. People want to play this game on a console and feel like they're playing an old pro skater or underground game.

This will probably end up being a shit pay to win title which is a shame. Phones have a lot of potential, and it's wasted on cheap manipulative business strategies. Also, nobody designs games properly for touch screens.

Yeah that Tony Hawk 2 port for iphones doesn't even work anymore since they've updated the firmware.  Activision refuses to update the game so that it plays correctly.  So blame them.

As for this news, not surprising.  Tony Hawk has always been something that is easily enjoyed quickly even though a big fan could spend countless hours mastering it and getting better and better.  I'm just wondering how good it'll be.  HOPEFULLY IT WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT be a freemium game.  If it is, then Activision can go die in a fire.  No seriously.

Does Tony Hawk even play these crappy games? You would think he would be tired of ruining his name by now.

True Skate is an excellent skating game for android, spent hours on that thing

It's probably a free to play game, where you go around and clean up the city of skate stoppers.
"Remove these skate stoppers of this ledge/rail" Yes/no
Wait 3 hours or pay 10 Tony Hawk bucks to skip the timer.

Not played a Hawk game in ages, not really considering this either, unless it removes the stupid arcade button input (up + flick button is pop shove etc).

ew, mobile gaming. tiny screens and touchy controls; that's not exactly how I'd like to play a skateboarding game.

They screwed us PC gamers by not releasing THPS1 on PC and now it seems consoles are about to receive similar treatment.

Exclusivity scum.

Holy fuck, how can a company be this stupid!? If you actually made a proper Tony Hawk game, like TH PS2, without all the shitty gimmicks no one ever asked you for, the game would sell plenty! I swear this industry is being run by complete idiots who live in some kind of separate fantasy world.

This piece of shit mobile game is going to tank just as hard as every other TH game from the last five years, because you refuse to stick to what people actually liked. But no no, let's embrace all this new technology and fail miserably each time because we're completely incompetent idiots.

Activision, I dislike you very much. Fuck off.

Interested, interested, inter... not anymore.  Maybe I'm just getting old, but I just don't dig mobile gaming unless it's actually on a handheld system.  I've tried, but I can't get into it.  Most of the games I've played are garbage or have no feeling of a real game.

Doesn't his contract expire in 2015? Activision really messed up by signing him to a 15 year contract. Such a shame, the series was great in the beginning.

why you bastards why i wanted a new console game that was as good as the titles on PS2 a new THUG game would of been awesome why would they make a mobile games like as if it will make them more money lets pretend that you sold 10 million copies of this mobile game for 3 dollars each that would be only like 30 million dollars you would make now lets pretend you made a console game that was really good and it only sold 2 million sold at 60 dollars each you would still make 120 million and if you make a good Tony hawk game it will sell a lot more then 2 million you could easily sell more then 5 million copies and possibly more then 10 million sure the game would cost a lot more but if you made a really good game i reckon you could still make a bigger profit from a console game and even if you couldn't yo should just do it anyway you PS3/360 titles didn't do to well because they were mediocre not because fans lost interest in the series

Well that's one way plummet one's interest in the game, meh.

Okay I'm calling It, also going to be free 2 play with tons of microtransactions.

I can see the logic, but Activision should know better. Then again, they are pretty terrible as of the last near decade or so.

aww, thats dissapointing... so they are going after the money. I can't blame them i suppose. Lots of people will still spend tonnes of cash on it because its a mobile game. It won't be much of a game though I'd say.

So it's probably going to suck then? Maybe if they named it Flappy Boards they might get some quick sales.

How to build hype: Tease upcoming game of beloved franchise.

How to kill hype: Say it's coming to mobile.

@fede018

Do you really think that mobile phones/tablets are a good gaming platform with quality titles?

This isn't about people being afraid of new and emerging technology, it's about people not wanting the industry to go down a slippery slope of garbage games wrought with publisher money-grubbing and scam tactics with no real gameplay value on a platform that controls like a shopping cart in a glue factory after an explosion on the product line.

teller76567
teller76567

The Angry Birds audience is killing games as we know it. That just blows and not in a good way

fede018
fede018

@MHzBurglar @fede018yes, they are. You can find good titles in the Android and iOS stores

do you also dismiss 3DS and PSP/Vita games because they are portable? Just because it doesn't have a control (which you can buy BTW) is different?

MHzBurglar
MHzBurglar

@demondogx @Lsnake

At least they had the good sense to make a PC versin of Deus Ex: The Fall without microtransactions.  Can't say I'm a fan of the Tony Hawk games, but I still feel they deserve better than this.

MHzBurglar
MHzBurglar

@fede018 @MHzBurglar

I don't dismiss the 3DS or Vita at all.  They're real gaming systems with great games! (though the Vita could use a little more love...)  They aren't "mobile" platforms in the gamer's usage of the term; they're categorized as "Portables" or "Handhelds".  The term "Mobile" in the gaming world typically refers to iOS and Android phones and tablets.

To that end, name me some quality and engaging titles that are A) exclusive to iOS/Android and B) contain no microtransactions and C) have enjoyable controls.  I'm not trying to push any buttons, I just geniunely want to know if decent stuff actually exists as I only ever see a sea of crap when I look at the app store and Google Play.
