New Tomb Raider film coming from The Departed studio

Crystal Dynamics working with GK Films on new Lara Croft film that will not be continuation of Angelina Jolie movies.

A new Tomb Raider film is on the way from GK Films, the company that produced Academy Award Best Picture winners The Departed and Argo. Variety reports that Crystal Dynamics is working "closely" with GK Films instead of merely licensing off the rights.

"They are working from this new take that we've given them," Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher said of GK Films. "It's a good partnership. We're seeing the challenges through the same lens."

Gallagher explained that the upcoming Tomb Raider film will not be a continuation of 2001's original Lara Croft: Tomb Raider or the 2003 follow-up Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, both of which starred Angelina Jolie.

"It was important for both of us to have a cohesive version of the franchise," Gallagher said.

It was not mentioned if Jolie will reprise her role as the lethal archaeologist Croft for the upcoming film or if the studio will bring in someone new. Californication actress Camilla Luddington provided the voice work and motion capture for Croft in the latest game.

Tomb Raider was released today for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. For more, check out GameSpot's review.

I vote for Camilla Luddington to play Lara Croft in the movie seeing she already has in the game!

My vote for the new move Lara Croft - Lauren Cohen (even the initials are the same) http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1659348/?ref_=tt_cl_t8

Why?

1. She has that timeless beauty needed for the role, she fits the type, and she isn't pegged as some other character to the point that we couldn't see her as Lara Croft.

2. Because she's as good an actor as anyone else for such a role, probably better.  Plus, she can act.

3. She already shows talent in action/drama roles with The Walking Dead.

4. Because accents are easy enough to fake for the purposes of a global English Speaking audience.  You don't need a Brit to play a Brit anymore than you need an American to play an American.

It'll suck like all game to movie conversions. End of story. Next....!

This could be good. Departed and Argo are damn good movies. Damn good. Glad to see that this won't be a continuation of the Jolie films.

Ohh, will this be a Womens Lib propaganda piece too? About had enough of these political activists invading my gaming.

If they don't choose Camilla Luddington for the part, the only other person I think would be great at it would be Jennifer Lawrence after seeing her in The Hunger Games.

Either one of those two and I would be happy. Camilla did fantastic in the new game!!

the jolie movies were a waste of time imo. awful movies.. hopefully this iteration of the world of tomb raider will be done properly and jolie does not reprise her role as the lethal archaeologist.

All game movie's should be CGI. No compromise.

I'd give it my money...unless it gets really bad reviews.

No Jolie is a good start. also CD working with the studio is also a plus. nothing worse than giving it to someone who doesn't 'get' it.

I think Camilla Luddington was a poor casting choice by CD. It's quite apparent that she is not  suited to voice acting or at least she needs more experience. Her voice acting is part of the reason Tomb Raider failed to evoke any strong emotional response from me throughout the entire story. The other reason would be medicore sound engineering. She just didn't make it believable. The game was fun, but it could have been so much more enjoyable if the acting was better.

camilla is a real babe, but don't you guys think that lara is taller than her? how tall is the reboot lara compared to camilla. cause if their heights are similar then im all for her.

Sounds good if it's as epic as all the previews for the game, I thought the original movie was okay but the sequel was boring iirc.

I know they aren't seen as successful or very good by many, but I liked the ones with Angelina Jolie. They were entertaining action movies. I like this new approach to Lara, though, so it wouldn't be bad to base some movies around the rebooted version of her.

As long as it's 2013 Lara, sure.

I give every video game movie a shot. They can't keep being bad forever right?? I personally think Missy Peregrym would be a good fit for the role.

It will no doubt get hammered by the critics, but I'm at least hoping for a good bit of popcorn movie goodness.

Gemma Arterton would be an excellent choice for Lara, in my opinion.

@RaiceGeriko You do know that Lauren Cohan is British and already has a real accent, right?

Personally, I like Jaime Murray, though she'd be better for the more established Lara than the for young Lara origin story.

@DarthLod I'm an objectivist and I haven't noticed any Liberal bias in the new Tomb Raider. Maybe a little feminism (But honestly, not as much as I expected), but nothing else too political.

@kamikazeespleen jennifer lawrence is a good choice and shes dull as ditch water in real life so could probly pull off the moody pouty and very well spoken posh lara

@Scarshi I agree. And they should be written and produced by the team who made the games.

Just imagine how cool the Silent Hill movies would've been if they'd been made by the original game developers!!

@Scarshi That'll be nice for Tomb Raider series; yet, I also like the movie counterparts.

@nparks @RaiceGeriko And besides that... she'd still make a great Lara Croft.  She could pass for a 20-something college student on her first adventure.

RaiceGeriko
RaiceGeriko

@nparks @RaiceGeriko She was born in America - New Jersey, to be specific.  I don't know how much more American you get than Jersey...

She didn't move to the UK until she was older.  If she's British, then I'm the Duke or York.

@SythisTaru @DarthLod

I agree with Sythis.  I study Social Behavior of the Sexes and the political movements thereof.  I was extremely worried about a completely unrealistic Feminist approach to Lara as a female lead in the new Tomb Raider "because women need unrealistic 'strong' identities to inspire them.'  It's not that I do not think female characters cannot be heroic, it's just that when you make the same sort of character who is a female, behave the same ways as a man would think and behave, and then uses her sexual appeal as the only source of intrigue... you run into problems.  Essentially, not only are you making her psyche completely fairy-tale, but you are making her a sexual idol - which should explain how messed up Feminism is in the first place, that they would ever be behind such a character... which they were.  In my (at the time) teenage ignorance... I thought it was cool, because... bewbs.  That sort of stuff just doesn't work anymore.  That's the sort of thing that made Lara Croft such a 2D character in the first place, and ultimately, why Tomb Raider needed a reboot and a rewrite of the central character.

TR continued to tank because Lara Croft was an uninteresting character when compared to other characters that were simply better - Nathan Drake, Solid Snake, Desmond.  People played their games because these characters were good.  No one cares about a Metal Gear without Snake unless the character presented earns their stripes - Raiden did not make the cut in MGS 2... this latest one, though.  Thankfully, the game industry has matured, and Tomb Raider 2013 is a great example of this.  Mostly because the industry has grown to the point that you actually need professional writers who think about the depth of characters, whereas use to... the writer was just another coder.

Not that I am without criticism, but for the most part... TR 2013 is way better a story for a realistic Lara than I ever thought it would be. She never lost her psychological vulnerability, and this is key to a great female character.  While you can't make her a victim, she can remain vulnerable to normal issues.  While one could make the stupid argument about how she is killing men left and right... that's the same stupid argument a person would make about RE5 and black people.  What else do you expect to find in a game set in Africa?  More to TR, what would you expect to find in a game set on an island that has a history of shipwrecked sailors being marooned?  So, these sorts of things, I can overlook objectively.

But, as far as making another TR Movie... ehhh... while I was playing TR 2013, I got so jazzed about the game, I decided to rewatch the first move - I never could stomach the second one.  All I can say is it is a pretty terrible movie.  I remember when I was younger, knowing it wasn't a great movie, but to some degree found enjoyment out of the adventure of it all.  But today... the movie made it clear that you can't have a good story without a good character.  Jolie played the part of Lara about as good as could be expected... mainly because all she had to do was puff her lips and wear tight shirts.  That's... all there was to the old Lara.

As long as they keep to the root of the character of Lara Croft that was presented in TR 2013... I'm all for a new movie.  Unfortunately, I know that won't be the case.  Having said that... I'm not looking forward to a movie.

@ryanreynolds @aryanbrar Keeley Hawes was a good model for Lara, and I loved her from shows suck as Spooks. My TR game hasn't arrived yet so I can't comment on it, but I think Camilla is stunning and the model in the game looks pretty nice to me. Can't wait to play!

@RaiceGeriko @nparks this is true shes lived in the UK most of her life but was born in new jersey and would most defo have that terrible accent women from new jersey have , however she probly has learned how to talk proper posh british style living in the UK.
