New The Elder Scrolls Online trailer heralds beta signups going live

New CGI trailer sets the tone between the game's three warring factions; gamers can sign up to take part in the beta now.

by

ZeniMax Online has released a new trailer for upcoming MMO The Elder Scrolls Online as the game's beta signups go live.

The Alliances trailer shows a warrior, mage and thief fighting for control of Cyrodill's White Gold Tower, one of the game's central locations - all three of the game's factions will be able to compete for control of Cyrodill, with the faction able to install its own Emperor if victorious. No gameplay footage is shown in the trailer.

Signing up for the beta, specifics of which are currently unknown, requires players to give Bethesda specifics about their PC or Mac and agree to a lengthy nondisclosure agreement. "The moment you have been eagerly awaiting is finally here," reads the beta signup website. "Now is the time for future members of the Aldmeri Dominion, Daggerfall Covenant, and Ebonheart Pact to rally and show your support!"

The Elder Scrolls Online is expected to launch this year, though one analyst has already said it will inevitably go free-to-play. For more information on the upcoming MMO check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

"Let's just hope they don't pull a SWTOR"

Someone commented about the trailer in youtube. LOL, cannot be more true. That should be a tagline for all future MMO releases. The biggest potential ends up in an epic failure. How could you go wrong with Star Wars IP? The result is the resignation of Bioware CEO and a whole bunch of layoffs. What a sad end to a company with so much history and accomplishment all thanks to EA.

I still cringe every time I think about SWTOR. Even from beta, I was greeted with such a terrible game engine - stupid Hero Engine. Client was sluggish. Graphics was extremely mediocre for 2013. UI was terrible. Everything is bland and unimaginative. And when I voiced those opinions in forum, people say it is BETA. Couple of months later, nothing changed. Same sluggish engine, client, UI. The only saving grace is its wonderful storytelling ala Bioware. There goes the future of Star Wars Universe.

Now, ESO has the similarities of SWTOR. Supposed Hero Engine, or a heavily modified one. Mediocre graphics. Yes yes, I know most MMO veterans say graphics don't matter, just gameplay. But this is 2013. But graphics and gameplay matters. Good engine design matters. Look what SWTOR brought us ... a client with engine that seems like it feels like a 2-3 years old tech when it was released.

While GW2 won't take the MMO crown anytime away from WoW, it was fairly successful. They developed good gameplay and fantastic graphics. Their client was very smooth and their engine's performance was great out of the launch. Now, they still have some issues when you have 100 people in WvW, but they have accomplished a substantial leap in MMO improvements.

I am a huge fan of Elder Scroll series. I know Bethesda and Zenimax is 2 different companies. Let's hope ESO not be the downfall of Bethesda Softworks or parent company Zenimax Media. So far the reputation of Bethesda has been fairly good, releasing great games, albeit somewhat buggy. We don't need another EA or Activision.

I am slightly dumbfounded by the number of people making comments about this trailer not containing gameplay and not looking like what the game will actually look like.  This is a marketing trailer to get people pumped.  About every game has one of these.  Any Blizzard fans should know this best of all.

They have a 9  minute intro video that is all gameplay here:

http://elderscrollsonline.com/en/media/videos/411

Maybe actually look the game up first before you start attacking it.  As to whether it will succeed, who can say?  Either you like MMOs or you don't.  I think some MMO'ers have unrealistic expectations with each MMO that comes out.  I'm still playing SWTOR and I enjoy it.  I thought WoW was one of the most boring games I've ever played but roughly 10 million people disagree with me, and that's fine.

On the other hand, it's important to remember the environment that WoW started in.  That is, it had almost no competition and was leagues ahead of its much older predecessors.  Blizzard itself has a large following so that really helped.  It's had nearly a decade to develop (original WoW had basically no end game content).  Comparing every MMO that comes out to WoW to me is a bit of a mistake.  I think WoW is a fluke and its level of success is not likely to happen again in the MMO universe for a long time.

The MMO market is now saturated with options, each hoping to take WoW down.  But the people who play WoW have prob been playing for years and are so emotionally and psychologically (and financially) invested in the game that they aren't going to leave it permanently until a new MMO actually looks like this cinematic trailer, and we are years away from that reality. My advice is to quit comparing MMOs to WoW and just play what you enjoy.  I think ESO will be fun, but I'm not expecting it to change my life or redefine the MMO industry.

All that time and money spent into making this trailer just to tell us there will be alliance/pvp? Was this supposed to get me excited? Sure the CG trailer was awesome, but it's not the like the gameplay will be as cinematic and cool.

They won't get any money or play time from me.  If it's not single-player, it's an MMO.  Just say no to MMO.  Cloudware is vaporware.  I'll be playing Oblivion when ESO is just a memory.

If I want to play epic RPG I play it in single player, I am not interested in MMOs. Why bother to have human opponents, mostly idiot or cocky idiot ...children (99%)  ?? Children have no sense of discipline, organization skills etc  so why wasting time with them in a MMO ? What ??? ...How about playing with my friends online ?  I am not interested either. I don't have friends who waste money on games online. Me neither !

Bethesda made a mistake. they think they can match Blizzard with their idiotic Warcraft, Starcraft online , where only children play. They think that are slick enough to trick people into this. Things won't work thatway. They will let it free-to-play and after a while they will admit they were wrong and they will...close the shop starting old ideas about a new single player RPG. Mark my words...

A class-driven MMO with 3 factions to pick from... It completely kills the Elder Scrolls IMO. Elder Scrolls has always been about being what you want to become. Everybody starts a character on equal grounds. You can go anywhere and do anything.

In the Elder Scrolls, you were rewarded for doing the things you wanted to level up You could specialize in one area starting the game, but if you got tired or decided it wasn't your style, you could very easily switch to a whole new approach. Sneak if you want to sneak and block if you want to block. Now they're going for the old and outdated XP Level-up concept where killing a guy with my Sword will let me level up my ability to cast spells. It's archaic and defies what the series is supposed to be.

Factions also defies the series because you're supposed to be able to go anywhere at any time of your choosing. Having Factions is likely going to limit the friendly areas you'll be able to visit and that just isn't the spirit of the Series. I'm always one for upgrading and enhancing a series to make way for the future, but downgrading a series to the point of being a blatant replica of an opposing franchise is not acceptable.

I can only hope the CGI isn't an indication of the character models in Elder Scrolls either. They don't look anything like an Elder Scrolls character. They look like another set of bland characters blatantly ripped out of a World of Warcraft or Guild Wars game. The distinctive art style of the Elder Scrolls is lost in this title and I can only pray they don't butcher the lore like they have the Art and gameplay mechanics.

If they're really insistent on making the Elder Scrolls playable online, how about adding a patch to Skyrim to make it co-op accessible. Being able to run through the game with a friend with a friend would make it multiple times better than it already is. Hell, release a co-op patch for Oblivion too. Bring the Oblivion Morrowind mod over to the 360 and add co-op so players can go through an updated version of Morrowind too. Anything would be better than this mess of a game right now.

MMO-fans spend too much time dreaming about the next "great thing" to be released...

...I jumped off that hype-train and I'm better off for it.

A (very) impressive video, but... Its not even slightly indicative of what the game'll be like (Unless we get a load of cutscenes breaking up play)... Other than saying "We will have the three generic core classes". Still, I won't pass judgement passed on a movie.

The fact this game is trash-talked/misunderstood so much is actually endearing to me, since all the hype around SWTOR and GW2 just set people up for the inevitable let-down.  TESO might just pleasantly surprise us

Wow, it's kinda sad that any new mmo is pretty much on a timer to becoming free to play now. Maybe ZeniMax should consider skipping a step and introduce this one as free to play.

This trailer reminds me of when SW:TOR was being shown off, except this time i feel i wont be disappointed. It really bugs me to see so many people trashing this game before they've even seen any gameplay (or even info for that matter), cause from what I've heard this game sounds really groundbreaking, I mean the fact that they're making it in first person is enough to sell it to me, let alone the amount of effort they're putting in to make it "as Elder Scrolls like as possible". *Sigh*, the ignorance of gamers knows so bounderies...

I find odd that they seem to have changed the facial structure of elves in this trailers (a least for the dunmer and the altmer in the video). I guess that's what happens when you try to appeal to a wider crowd, you start falling into the more widely accepted preconception of things like attractive elves and sneaky french men (A.K.A. that Breton rogue like character in the trailer) Not that I'm heart broken over it, I actually never played elves in the TES series because I really didn't like how they looked but I think they should stick to their guns on this one.

As for the game itself, I hope it lives up to expectations and that combat is better than other MMOs I've played. I'm not sure how or if they will apply the character progression system I liked in Skyrim / Fallout or even the simpler version from Oblivion. This system could feel strange in an online environment I think. I guess we'll see pretty soon(ish)!

i have a good feeling about this game, only mmo i played was wow and that was in its BC days of glory, now wow is a suck fest and its so lame I can't even look at it anymore.

I don't know if i have time for an MMO anymore but if its good and fun the i will try it for sure

Cool trailer but I'm still worried the gameplay will be generic mmo fare that gets boring within a few weeks.  There are just way too many mmos out there.

EA didn't develop the game, Bioware did. You can't blame the publisher for the short-comings of the developer.

@prince__vlad I total agree withe you prince_vald.

I have always loved the Elder Scrolls because they were single player.

Over every MMO I have ever played, I have bee disappointed. I just don't want to deal with a bunch of retards out there doing ridiculous things that make my experience less than average.

Having said that, I'm willing to try ESOL. Maybe they've got it right.

bigcrusha
bigcrusha

@prince__vlad First off... Starcraft isn't an mmo. Secondly, the FAR larger majority of the playerbase is teen +.

Thirdly, I have no doubt in my mind this is going to sell. Remember this is Bethesda were talking about. They have a large amount of consumer trust because unlike many other game devs these days, these guys give you EXACTLY what you're paying for and then some.

The majority of fans don't just buy Bethesda games because it's open world single player. They buy it because Bethesda knows how to make one hell of an adventure that keeps you glued to your seat for hours upon hours.

lo_crow98
lo_crow98

@prince__vlad  Could at least research a bit about a game before bashing it.  It's not even by Bethesda, it's being made by their sister company Zenimax. If by "idiotic Warcraft" you mean "most successful MMO to date" then yes, I hope it matches that and even surpasses it.

lorenzoa88

@DarkReign2552 Why are so many people predicting that ESO is the end of single player Elder Scrolls games? Arena came out in 1994. Daggerfall 1996. Morrowind 2002. Oblivion 2006. Skyrim 2011.  You're not going to get another single player Elder Scolls game for at least 3-6 years and ESO isn't going to have anything to do with time it takes for the next single player game to get released.  Zenimax is spearheading ESO. Bethesda is a big company, I think they can handle multiple game developments. Relax.

@DarkReign2552 Firstly, TES does't really have an art-style (all the games look very different, time of development aside). Secondly, the developers said themselves that as you use a certain weapon you get better with it and you can change go from using a staff to using a hammer even if you're a mage class. Heck, why are you making so many assumptions anyways? It's blatantly clear to me that you have no idea what this games going to be like, and the fact that you managed to write 5 paragraphs on it baffles me!

@fredlamirande The elves in TES 4:oblivion have the same, if not, more human like facial structure as the the ones in this trailer. It would be such a stupid thing to get upset over, but that's what gamers are like these days i guess.

@ben1028 @Fembot_Eulogy Ignore cg. Looks nice but mmos are far cry from what you saw in the trailer. They very methodical. If you want to check out mmo before this comes out, there is several good f2p. You could start with lineage 2, which is a classic mmo, one of my favs, then there is plenty of others, and the better ones being Raiderz, swtor, Vindictus, %s, Runes of Magic. But still there is plenty  It's good fun as long as you not take it too seriously and not be playing obsessively as there is danger of that.
