New Super Monkey Ball rolls on Wii

Sega reveals Balance Board-compatible Step & Roll scheduled for winter 2010 debut.

by

Sega's Super Monkey Ball has never been shy to embrace new hardware. The series had launch-day debuts on the GameCube, Wii, and iPhone.

Why is it OK for cartoon characters to wear shirts without pants?

The action-puzzle game seemed a natural fit for Nintendo's Wii Balance Board, but it was nowhere to be found when the peripheral debuted in a bundle with Wii Fit in May of 2008. Sega will rectify that oversight next year, as the publisher confirmed today that Super Monkey Ball: Step & Roll will arrive on the Wii in winter of 2010.

After debuting in Japanese arcades, Super Monkey Ball arrived in North America in 2001 as a GameCube launch title, relying on the system's analog stick controller to let players subtly tilt a playfield to guide sphere-encased simians through treacherous obstacle courses. Since then, the same basic premise has sustained the franchise through a number of iterations on the Game Boy Advance, Xbox, PlayStation 2, and Nintendo DS.

digifreak642. This has nothing to do with Nintendo. As for Monkey Ball, Well good for SEGA of America. Sonic needs a break(He's preparing to return on a Sega console.) it's time he gets rebranded.

This franchise has been more or less D.O.A. since Super Monkey Ball 2.

I notice other tilt-to-roll games since banana blitz have gauges you can see your level of tilt. That would have helped the monkey ball game tremendously. Personally, I'd rather see a motion plus Monkey ball than a balance board version. But then the motion plus has no trouble finding value.

Super Monkey Ball was an awesome game the second had a stupid story but still great puzzles. The Wii launch game is just ok the Wii-mote just does not work as well or as percise as an analog stick and I am sure the balance board will be the same so I will pass.

Super Monkey Ball is the definitive Wii experience. Sadly. @tdaker: FYI the word is gluteus maximus, which means large gluteal [muscle]. "gluttonous maximous," as you put it, more closely translates to "over-indulgent large"... which doesn't even contain a noun.

I've been waiting a long time for this, finally!

It's about time Sega took a break from Sonic games. The hedgehog really needed a break. It's not that I don't enjoy the games, I loved Unleashed, but Sega needs to stop relying on him to carry the load. We want to see your other stuff. Sega of old had a lot to offer. They weren't all about Sonic.

Why is it ok for cartoon characters to wear shirts without pants? It allows quick access when generating more lives.

If this game is as super as REAL sphere-encased monkey balls then expect the world to fall on its gluttonous maximous. I'LL be breaking more than just a shiny new balance board over this super monkey insanely difficult game.

To exploit the potential of the WiiMotion Plus should be a new addition for this second release of MB... Maybe an online mode could be interesting... I just loved the race mode of MB2 for GCN and getting the mode online will be nice!!!

Ehh, I miss when these games were played with controllers... but still, more monkeys couldn't be a bad thing.

This makes sense, what with the similar Wii Fit mini-game where you tilt the field to get the Mii-emblazoned balls to fall into the holes down to the next level. Looking forward to it!
