New Strider revealed for Xbox One, PS4

Capcom announces brand new sidescrolling game due for release in early 2014 on next-gen and current-gen; Double Helix developing.

by

Today at San Diego Comic-Con, Capcom announced an all-new "2.5D" sidescrolling Strider game for early 2014.

In development at Double Helix, the game is coming to next-generation machines the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, as well as Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC (through Steam).

"The year is Meio: 048, and Hiryu, a young but deadly assassination expert is out to eliminate Grand Master Meio," reads the game's description.

The new Strider game was described as brand new and nonlinear with a Castlevania: Symphony of the Night-style structure.

In a post to Capcom's blog, the company said the new Strider will feature "high-speed Cypher combat," as well as various unique Cypher abilities that players can earn throughout the game. The game will also see the return of robot allies, Capcom said.

Developer Double Helix is also behind this November's Killer Instinct for Xbox One.

GameSpot will have more on the new Strider as it becomes available.

I think the  Wii-U is crap but no Wii-u version? WTF? Everyone should witness the awesomeness of STRIDER!!!!!!

Double Helix seems to have this same crappy art style in both Strider and Killer Instinct. Why hand these great games off to this second tier company?

My reaction when I realized this crapfest of ignoring damage and constant health regen iOS/Android looking game as actually being a XBONE and PS4 title has left me speechless.

THIS is why we don't buy your games anymore Capcom! You outsource the stuff you don't even care about, over simplify it because GOD FORBID you release another Devil May Cry 3 Original Release 'hard' game for people to play!

And new Strider? I like him better in fighting games. But yeah, the hell is with the running through gunfire and having no sense of danger in this piece? You don't even get knocked back/down from anything!

You just run and spam buttons to reflect bullets and gain health killing mobs. And just to prove how lazy and unimaginative you guys are, you recycle a boss from his first PS2 game.

NO I would not pay more than $15 bucks for this garbage. I could beat this within 2-4 hours TOPS and that's assuming its a decently long game and not counting cutscenes and scripted events.

GOD what a waste of a good franchise this'll be if it gets released for anything higher than 15-20. This is literally NOT EVEN CLOSE to Arcade level action. Saw the gameplay for this and I still can't believe this is a game they'll dare charge us 40-60 bucks for.

NO Capcom!

JUST NO!

And you can shove your Ace Attorney 5 up your ass too with your Digital download only crap and refusal to bring over the ONE GAME we demanded for, Professor Layton vs Pheonix Wright game. WTF is wrong with you greedy fucks?! THIS FROM A COMPANY THAT SUPPORTED THE SATURN EVEN AFTER ITS DEATH?

For SHAME Capcom! You're all a SHELL of your former selves. How about collaborating with the creator of Okami and letting him and his team make you guys a great game again for Next Gen? Because THIS is just plain pathetic.

seeing how this is capcom, if people didn't buy the game they will say we won't make any more sequel because of the lack of sales. if people do buy it, they will continue to support it by releasing the same game with DLC that you can only get by buying the game again.

Psyched!  One of my favorite arcade games of all time.

Just with they would do a real current gen reboot like they did with Ninja Gaiden (Not counting NG2 or 3)

Why is everyone nostalgic for the games of my childhood?

Feels like young gamers want what used to be, and old gamers desperately want something new.

Looks like same old Capcom.

Try adding a story, cinematics and character driven motivations.

Just because Double Helix released some crappy movie tie in games with limited budgets and time to develop does not mean that they cannot produce quality games when relatively deep pocket publishers like Capcom and Microsoft Studios give them time and resources. I for one am looking forward to both Strider and KI. If you think bashing Double Helix is the cool thing to do, keep your head in the sand. I'm definitely going to play both of their new releases when they're out.

"The year is Meio: 048"?  True Strider needs to be set in the year 20xx in the still extant Soviet Union.

nothing good came from double helix game, I saw all the character gameplay on the so call "ki" and glacius is overpower, noting but spamming easy move in which he doesn't have to touch them.

I read Strider, this was a blast from the past I was excited then I read double helix and.....so disapointed.

Finally something different from them. I can actually look forward to this for a change, I've never played a Strider game, and that it's a side-scroller makes it interesting to me.

So I'm guessing this is probably the mystery character in Ultra Street Fighter.

Seeing it described as "Metroidvania", which is enough for me.  I'll get it, if only for the sake of nostalgia.

Oh man, I totally forgot about Strider!  The old games were pretty fun so I hope these continue that.  I won't spend $60 on it though so hopefully it's a semi cheaper title.

looks ok but i sure hope this will be a 10-15$ arcade game. never gonna pay 50$ for that. but after 20 years or so of waiting i'm glad that it's finally back

Please PLEASE bring back Megaman! Make some badass side scrolling action like you did with X. Some of the best platforming in the NES/SNES era were Megaman games.

They announce a game that will not make or break a person deciding whether or not to buy a next gen console.  This game should have an Indie price.  $4.99 to $9.99

I honestly don't give a **** about this game.

Hmm interesting, now... make Streets of Rage again, same concept up to date graphics, more combos, more enemies, more weapons, PVP, co-op, co-op online, character customization etc now that would be a network game I would be happy to purchase!

Double Helix developed Silent Hill Homecoming, a game that was roundly panned by critics.  That Capcom would employ them to develop this game says a lot about their ambitions.

Please Double Helix, channel your 2D mastery from Shiny Entertainment days and make a good game.

I've mained Strider 6000 times and love him to death, but this looks like an HD remake with no new gameplay. It would've been nice if the developer was Platinum Games instead.

@telaros I don't know about the strider game, I haven't seen much so far, but I'd imagine with that footage it'd be a downloadable. I do think it'd be overpriced at 60. Still looks kinda interesting to me.

I gotta say though, they have got to give us layton vs wright.

@telaros You appear to have gathered quite a lot of information from a minute reveal trailer. I too am annoyed at Capcom, but this looks like fun that I haven't had since Shadow Complex...

@fadersdream And that sounds like every other game out now. Personally I want old school gameplay with new graphics like this seems to have. I should add that I am an old school gamer seeing how I just saw your other post. I was technically already an adult when Strider came out.

topherlee94
topherlee94

@wuushew Thing is that it IS now 20xx, the game DOES take place in Kazakh(astan) and Meio:048 is a very telling thing for the game actually and more significant than saying 20xx when it is now 2013. Basically they are saying they've suffered 48 years under Meio.

bunchanumbers

@DeanoFantasy Streets of Rage was a Sega game. I don't think that capcom has control of that. They did do Final Fight though. Most of the USF4 characters are from the Final Fight Universe. It shouldn't be too hard to port them into a side scrolling adventure with command skills and combos. Actually that would be awesome.

Dandyslayer13

@Downloadpilot HAHA They won't even give us a new Darkstalkers what makes you think we will EVER get a new Cyberbots?

telaros

@ahpuck @telaros I don't eat cheese, and not a drinker. The game is cheap. Plain and simple. Much like yourself.

telaros

@K1NG0FTH3B0NG0 @telaros They had a whole play through of the first level buddy. Look at the post above this thread for the Strider gameplay detailed video.

Fun as long as it's not some 30-60 dollar game. Otherwise sure, you can play it for the levels. I'm sure the boss fights might be interesting, but if that first boss is anything like the PS2 version and past Strider games, you pretty much know what to expect.

@Strider8009 @Downloadpilot Hey, they make exceptions. lol

Downloadpilot

@Dandyslayer13 @Downloadpilot I'm pretty sure they're just plain done with Captain Commando (which breaks my heart, cause I loved him in his own game and in MvC), but if you look at it objectively, the fact they are making Strider is a pretty big step in the fans' direction.

Dandyslayer13
Dandyslayer13

@Downloadpilot @Dandyslayer13 LOL So that gives you hope for a new Cyberbots???? We still don't have a Captain Commando sequel and that game was released in '91 unlike Cyberbots which was '95 and Strider which was '99. And technically Cyberbots did receive a spiritual sequel in '98's Tech Romancer.
