While Star Trek remains hugely popular on the big screen, it has been over a decade since the long-running sci-fi series appeared on TV. This will change in early 2017 when a new Star Trek TV show premieres, and it has now been announced that former Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller will oversee it.

Variety has confirmed that Fuller will act as showrunner and co-creator of the show, alongside Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote the last two movie adventures. In a statement, Fuller explained that he was a lifelong fan of the iconic series.

"My very first experience of Star Trek is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls," he said. "Before seeing a frame of the television series, the Star Trek universe lit my imagination on fire.

"It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand new iteration of Star Trek with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no Star Trek series has gone before."

Fuller's horror thriller Hannibal was an acclaimed spinoff from the popular novels of Thomas Harris. It ran for three season, but was cancelled by NBC in 2015.

The new Star Trek show is expected to air in January 2017. While the premiere episode will be broadcast on CBS's network channel, all subsequent episodes will initially screen on the company's All Access digital subscription service, making it the first show to launch on a broadcast network but air primarily on a VOD service.

This will be the first new Star Trek show for more than a decade--the last series was Star Trek: Enterprise, which ran for four seasons between 2001 and 2005. Since then, JJ Abrams has directed two movies, which recast the crew from the original series--2009's Star Trek and 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness.

The latest film, Star Trek Beyond, arrives in cinemas on July 22, 2016. CBS confirmed last year that the new series "is not related" to the movie.

Disclosure: CBS is GameSpot's parent company.
