Today during a Sony Pictures Animation event, the film company shared some further details about the untitled animated Spider-Man movie coming in 2018.

We learned that the standalone movie will focus on Miles Morales, a version of the web-crawler who assumes Spider-Man's identity after Peter Parker dies.

The untitled movie is being written by Phil Lord and produced by Chris Miller. They directed The Lego Movie and are also directing 2018's untitled Han Solo film. The new Spider-Man movie is being directed by Bob Persichetti (The Little Prince, Puss in Boots) and Peter Ramsey (Rise of Guardians) and is slated to open on December 21, 2018. Avi Arad (Iron Man, Spider-Man) and Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: Homecoming) are also producing the new Spider-Man animated film.

"What inspired us the most is that anyone can wear the mask," Lord and Miller said at the Sony Pictures Animation event today, as relayed by The Hollywood Reporter. "You can be any race, creed, or color."

We don't know who will voice Spider-Man in the film or what other characters might show up. Miles Morales appears in the Disney XD show Ultimate Spider-Man, voiced by Donald Glover.

The next Spider-Man movie is this summer's live-action Spider-Man: Homecoming, which stars Tom Holland as Spider-Man.

On the video game front, Ratchet & Clank developer Insomniac Games is working on an untitled Spider-Man game for PlayStation 4.
