New Smash Bros. Costume for Samus Reveals a Lot More Skin on 3DS/Wii U

Zero Suit Samus gets an alternate costume for Super Smash Bros. that's a throwback to her GBA adventures.

In a Miiverse update for Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS, game director Masahiro Sakurai revealed an alternate skin for Metroid's Zero Suit Samus.

Describing the Wii U image above, Sakurai wrote, "Pic of the day. Looking at the number of days we have left for development, it would be an impossible task to create this… That's what I told my staff. But thanks to the determination of her female designer, these Zero Suit outfits got completed in time. From the ending of Metroid: Zero Mission, here's Samus in shorts!"

As Sakurai points out, the suit is a callback to the an outfit you see Samus wearing after you beat Metroid: Zero Mission and Metroid Fusion under specific time and item conditions. And the same outfit will be available in the 3DS version of the game.

Skimpy alternate costumes have been around since the first Metroid game, where if you got to the end in less than an hour, Samus would show up after the credits in a two-piece bikini.

It's not inherently misogynistic to portray a woman wearing sexy clothes, but the context surrounding Zero Suit Samus makes the character really problematic. Why? Well think about it, why does Samus wear the power suit? Because it makes her more powerful! In fact the Zero Suit was originally featured in Metroid Zero Mission as the part of the story where Samus loses her powers; it's a stealth section. The whole object is to get the suit back because Samus is better with the suit; it's really her defining characteristic. You're supposed to feel vulnerable and weak when the suit isn't there. But at some point a decision was made to give Samus' Zero Suit a bunch more powers and fighting abilities so she's about as useful as regular suit Samus.

Why? There's no interest there, there's no reason to do it. I could say the idea holds about as much merit as giving Tony Stark his own suitless character in a Marvel fighting game, but it's actually /worse/ than that because at least Tony Stark spends a lot of time outside of his suit in the movies. He sort of has his own thing going on to draw off of, it would still be stupid but less stupid. So why put suitless Samus in a fighting game at all? The only reason, in case you haven't been paying attention, is to sexualize her. What we have here is taking a female with a defining characteristic and depriving her of that characteristic in order to suit the sexual fantasies of men. We've actually pulled away the character for no other reason than to show more skin and curves. That's far more misogynistic than simply creating a sexy character.

Oh, and then they gave her heels and a whip. I mean really? Try telling me this adds up to more than a sexual fantasy.

Looks like Smash is slowly turning into DOA. Kidding but I remember whenever I played the first Smash and didn't know who the Samus character was, let alone the gender since I had never played any Metroid games prior. It was just a mysterious character to me at that time. I've since played a few Metroid games and I don't see why she needed to be sexualized just because she's a woman. Since if she's a woman then fine but with the more recent games (namely other M), it's as if they wanna shove the fact that she's a girl down our throats. Also seeing this picture too just makes me think it's like she's saying,"look at me, I'm kicking ass and taking names, all while looking good doing it! Girl power!" It's just sort of annoying and it's not good that they took a character which could've possibly had some sort of potential and pretty much degraded her into your atypical female character. They could've made a more interesting character but of course since it's a female character she's either going to be model or downright ugly.

I just wish they could come up with more original characters, ones we don't see in practically every other game.

Eh, even though they keep trying to lame her up, she's still a bad@$$.  I'll stick with the suit, thanks.

Ah so that is why there are bugs in the game.  (they say if a computer system has pretty girls in it then the computer gets bugs and actually maybe powers down.  I pull down cool stuff online from torrents and used to play WoW.  It seemed when I quit this guild that it bricked my laptop.  I played a pretty elf and I was a balding fat guy. LOL)

I remember trying to speed run Metroid Zero Mission to see if I could get a nude Samus, I was a teenager with no internet access then.

Why does it matter? If you don't like the costume, don't use it. Simple as that.

Less clothing for girl characters! I wonder if Samus's boobs will grow with every Super Smash.

Samus is one of the best characters in Super Smash Bros. from a gameplay perspective.

add a costume that existed in a previous game....everyone is ok with it

add a costume that never existed in any game....everyone loses their minds(which makes sense since it shouldn't exist)

@vadagar1 Are you so sexist that when you say "everybody" you are only referring to men?

Women gives thumbs up when they see half naked men and loses their "frigging" minds when they see half naked women, so try to be less sexist.... please.

@vadagar1 Double standard bro, double standard. Women can shift their bras on the street but God forbid if a guy tries to fix his junk, no matter how discrete he is in unravelling his undies.

@Thanatos2k  Lmao, you're so pathetic I don't know whether to laugh or feel bad for you.  Come out the closet, we all know you secretly love Nintendo.

@Thanatos2k ?

Did you miss the part that this costume comes from the GBA games?

Or maybe you don't even know that she appeared in bikini in the end of the very first Metroid?

@Yalaa1 Metroid fans have no problem with the costume. Old school fans already knew who she was after beating it on NES. I can't believe you say to Metroid fans accpet Samus for who she is. We already did ages ago.We learned of Gunpei Yokoi's love for Aliens and saw how it drove the Metroid franchise. Samus' character did take a hit in the last Metroid game however the character a lot of us grew to respect is a woman who serves no one and is one of the baddest Bounty Hunters ever. Her Armour and weapons can decimate Master Chief (Still love the Chief) and Boba and Jango Fett have no chance against her reflexes and training. As said we Metroid fans already knew Samus probably before you were ever born

179107199999

@Monsterkillah Also have you even played the games? She did have a segment where she had no armor. She only had a pistol but still manged to finish her mission. You don't know Samus if you can easily call her that word and then call her a guy. As said before you must not know Metroid.

@Monsterkillah ....you're REALLY late to the party. Guess you never beat Super Metroid at its fastest time. LOL she wore less really.

Shadowdanc3r

@elheber  Why wouldn't it be ok for a fantasy game to be true to life in that respect?

Yalaa1
Yalaa1

Uhm... No they didnt.

Sorry to burst your bubble here but in reality nobody knew who Samus Aran was. All people knew was that Samus is a bounty hunter and a woman in a power armor. Fans always assumed that Samus was this stoic bad ass whos always been a bad ass without ever knowing of her history and personality revealed in the canonical manga. In other words, Samus never had a character before the manga. The same could be said for pretty much all Nintendo characters.

But thats not really my point here, i said that everybody should accept who Samus is because clearly butthurt Metroid fans are thinking that Nintendo is, just now, sexualizing Samus by giving her heels and more skimpy clothes, makin her more "slutty" and "ruining" her character because of Other M. Which is stupid.

Samus always been and always will be a sexy bad ass woman. And people (mostly fans) don't like the "sexy" part and call it sexist and sexualizing an already famous character whos ironically known for being sexualized ever since its original game.

@Shadowdanc3r @elheber Actually jiggle effects are definitely realistic and something to be considered. But a lot of the times developers exploit that and use it in marketing and talk about it as if it were something that contributes to your enjoyment of the game. There are games where jiggle physics are even mentioned and yet they are there. Like Lost Planet 2.

179107199999
179107199999

@Yalaa1 I see. In my opinion they aren't metroid fans. Ain't a Metroid fan if you never knew Samus was a woman who underneath that armour wore something more revealing than today.
