New Silent Hill So Scary You'll Sh*t Your Pants, Kojima Says

You'll want to have an extra pair of pants at the ready to play upcoming horror game from Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro.

The upcoming Silent Hill game that Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima and Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro are working on together is going for an extreme scare-factor. During yesterday's special livestream, which was focused primarily on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Kojima also took some time to outline his plans for the new Silent Hill game.

Kojima said, through a translator, that he originally wanted to design the new Silent Hill game--which he is calling Silent Hills--so that it would make you "pee your pants." But after speaking more with del Toro, the pair decided to ramp up the scare-intensity. Now, the studio says you should have an extra pair of pants at the ready when you play the game because, "We are aiming for a game that will make you sh*t your pants."

He went on to explain that there is a danger with making a game that is too scary. For a scary movie or a frightening amusement park ride, people can just close their eyes and wait until it ends. But in the context of games, people will stop playing if they are too scared; but Kojima isn't concerned about this.

"If you don't want to continue playing through the game, so be it. We don't care," he said. "We are aiming for a game that will make you s**t your pants. So please make sure you have a [change of clothes]." Kojima also joked that the limited edition for Silent Hills will come with a pair of pants.

Silent Hills was originally revealed this week as horror game P.T. ("playable teaser"), which was launched as a free demo on the PlayStation Store with almost no explanation as to what it was. Kojima admitted that P.T. was an experiment in making a game with Konami's own FOX Engine. But the graphics had to be pared down so people wouldn't know Kojima Productions made it, he said.

He went on to say that he was surprised that it was so quickly discovered that P.T. was in fact Silent Hills; he expected that it might take a week to be solved. Kojima also said that one of his goals for the P.T. experiment was to bring people together in an effort to discover the truth. For more on P.T./Silent Hills--which will feature The Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus in some way--check out GameSpot's video playthrough of the demo above.

Everybody's bitching about this relying too much on jump scares or being FP. It's an interactive teaser.

If you complete it the last two lines on screen reads:

"This game is a teaser.
It has no direct relation to the main title."

It's going to be a Silent Hill game for sure.

I couldn't play this game for more than 2-3 minutes. It's insane, especially with headphones, you can hear a door creak open behind you literally. Not sure if I'd be able to handle the full game tbh. Have this game on Project morpheus, and its a wrap

for those who complained about the teaser .. i tell them imagine a game of one map just a room you go round and round for hours and hours and you keep going with so much interest and curiosity and you never get bored .. this is a real genius

If you can stream it to the PS Vita, you can play it while you're in the bathroom and not have to worry about any pants crapping.

Also, I guess peeing your pants is fine, but if you take a crap in them, then and *only then* will you have to change them.

Can't wait to see footage from the actual game, I doubt it will look or play much like the teaser.

Just based on what I saw here, I think all of that time spent developing MGSV took a severely dark turn on Kojima.  Looks like adult-sized pull-ups will be highly sought after.

How Kojima spends his time:

-Designing games  5%

-Fucking with people 90%

This times a million. My body will be ready for this game.

People realise this is a highlights video right? This, thing (game?) really really really doesn't rely on jump scares, it has like 2 jumpy moments in the whole thing.

I enjoyed the first Silent Hill game, defined not sure if I'll be playing the game though. I've attempted to get through PT and it just freaked me the hell out.

Considering it's not even a demo, just a teaser, I can only imagine how scary the final game will be.

gajbutler

Why the feck did they announce this as P.T? It just caused massive confusion and the announcement was underwhelming..

If they just called it Silent Hill, people would have been excited, no need for the P.T BS.

You can easily scare me away from playing any game if it constantly bugs me to buy expensive dlc.

I found out something pretty cool after beating it for the 10th time today if you wait for the credits to pass you'll notice a company named "Wwise" was involved, which is an interactive sound engine company. We have known PT uses Microphone noises to trigger events like "Hello" "Lisa" "J" etc... but who knows, maybe Silent Hills will include more interactive sound abilities.

It IS definitely very scary, BUT it is Jump Scare: The Game, not Silent Hill.

Silent Hill never relied on jump scares.

When did Silent Hill become 1st person??? o.o Not saying that's bad, but it's making me wonder... When the Resident Evil reboot comes about, will we get a 1st person view of that?

joehret

I'm very mixed on this.  On the one hand, there was a sense of eeriness to it.  On the other, lots of gore and jump scares.  I don't have anything against the existence of gore and jump scares, but I feel like good horror games EARN those things by creating a chilling environment.  If I'm not already twitchy from the soundtrack and the confusion of what's going on then the fact that a mutilated dog carcass gets dropped on my head out of nowhere won't mean anything once my heart rate settles back down two seconds later.

Jump scares are a temporary source of excitement (a source that the player eventually develops some level of immunity to).  The only way to create a sustain sense of tension and fright is to make sure the atmosphere between the scares is intense and heavy.  And gore...gore is a garnish on an already unsettling experience.  If it wasn't scary with low-levels of gore, drenching it all in blood and chewed up internal organs won't get under anyone's skin.

P.T was a really scary ride and I loved it and once the news came out it is a Silent Hill reboot fcking quality. They needed to reboot that series.

Good horror games are not made by adding gore and blood. They are made by the eerie and disturbing enviornments and ambient sounds and by making you feel that your completely helpless.

The demo definitely brought SH back.  The last few have been decent but nothing great, glad to see they are on the right track with this one.  As video games become more realistic looking I wonder how horror movies will be able to match the intensity of actually playing as the character rather than just watching them.  Especially since most horror movies don't have particularly great plots so getting immersed in them is more difficult.  At least if a horror game has a bad story it can make it up by offering an game world to get immersed in.

No because it's scary the whole dam time

@gajbutler because a playable announcement is far more engaging than some suited exec telling us theres a new silent hill game?
because it meant that gamers got there before journos?
because horror and word of mouth work better than horror and announcements?
because twitch streaming is absurdly popular right now?
because this allows gamers to feel like a real part of the "announcement?"

take your pick

@gajbutler It's called creative marketing. Kojima is really good at that. It actually helps stir excitement in unique ways. The game is still far off, so there is plenty of time for standard marketing. But I guarantee you they were able to interest people they normally would not have with this unique approach.

Bowser05

@mrbig120 "PLAYABLE TEASER". It's a teaser...not even a full-fledged demo. What did you expect?

Bowser05

@Ripper_TV Yeah I don't get that either. The game itself is actually really pretty...yet the stock photo is nasty looking.

@20years Bayonetta is exclusive because its being funded by Nintendo. Xbox and PS didn't want it, so the game was canned, Nintendo decided to pay Platinum to make the game, game was uncanned. Hence, the game only exists because it's exclusive.

@20years Tomb Raider isnt exclusive though; IT's "Timed exclusive".

Ripper_TV

@20years It's not exclusive. Most definitely will come out on even PCs.

jonny_dutch

@Ripper_TV There are jump scares, but this is the least jump scary (good) horror game i've seen in years, the whole thing is tense as hell and you'll only jump like once every half hour depending how fast you play it. The horror comes from the changing scenery, the ambient sound, the use of light, the radio giving you backstory, and the creepy little details.

Jump Scare: The Game is most commonly known as Outlast.

igorphoenix

@carcassplays It didn't, at least nothing has been announced about that. P.T. is just a teaser, it's showing overall mood and atmosphere, not an actual gameplay.

First-person would make sense though, considering Kojima's plan to make the game as scary as possible.

KiriharaZro
KiriharaZro

@igorphoenix

Thats proof Kojima is mocking all gamers, first, Silent Hill was never a game made to "scare" but to play with your mind showing you bizarre and disturbing images, Kojima is making a game that'll scare you cheaply with those ghosts that appear suddenly, something that he took from The Room and one thing most gamers hated in the 4th Silent Hill game.

igorphoenix
igorphoenix

@KiriharaZro True. In fact my favorite SH (besides second) is Shattered memories and it's hardly horror at all.

Still, it's Kojima, he's a genius, he knows what he's doing and they've got Akira Yamaoka back. What could go wrong...

KiriharaZro
KiriharaZro

@igorphoenix

I don't think Kojima's style fit with the Silent Hill universe, if he only act as producer maybe the game has some chance to shine but still Del Toro is there and his style, in my opinion, don't fit either
