New PS3 model announced for Japan

New unit to consume less power; also used for Tales of Xillia X edition bundle.

Even with a lighter and slimmer version of the PS3, Sony still believes that there's room for extra improvements. The company recently announced a new PS3 model on its official page. The new model, called CECH-3000B, will consume less power--specifically from its original 230W to 200W--and will weigh in at 2.6kg.

The new PS3 model will consume less power and will be slightly lighter.

The model will also include a 320GB hard disc and will be sold for 34,980 yen ($436.50). The accessories bundled with the PS3 include a Dual Shock 3 controller, a power cable, an AV cable, and a USB cable. The new model will be shipped within the end of June.

Namco Bandai will also use the CECH-3000B model for its previously announced Tales of Xillia X Edition bundle. This bundle will retail at 37,980 yen ($470) and comes with a custom-painted PlayStation 3 alongside the game. For a preview of the game, head here.

@senjutsu Agreed. It would besavings for Sony but not for gamers. Especially with the huge rise in cost!

I've just bought a slimline PS3 but not opened it yet as I'm waiting for my birthday. (the suspense is killing me.) Looking at the specs for the 'new' one, can't really see the point so i tend to agree with senjutsu.

I'll stick with my original. It looks better, has more USB slots, and is fully backwards compatible, thank you very much.

The PS3 is not outdated. It is without a doubt the most advanced video game console on the market right now, and even the editors at Gamespot know that (though they don't ever admit it).

from when 34,980 yen becomes 436$? It would be 349,99$US, not 436$. Also, even if sony does another SKU, it doesn't mean it's gonna change something for us. I think it's gonna be only "changes inside". I mean, no visual changes, only minors production changes that saves money to sony, that's all.

@Majin Squall Its on the PSN store. It was the first thing I downloaded from it. PS2 compatibility. I believe its under medi, but I dont know for sure. Try searching it.

"Uses less power" WHOOPIDY DOO!!! Bunch of hippie nonsense. Have an 850w psu on my pc, when I really only need a 650w... why? Cause I like to be able to upgrade.

$436.50 good lord, thats alot for a old outdated system. I'd rather pick up a HD 6970 or 6950 GPU and Intel I5 3.3ghz. for $450. you'll easily out perform this new over priced model of PS3.

Does anybody know a trustworthy 512GB 2.5 Sata HDD? I'm thinking about upgrading that part of my PS3.

Good for the ones who don't own a PS3 or own an older version and want a slim version. But my 120G S3 Slim is just one year old and it's working just fine. I'm passing, thank you anyway Sony.

@UniverseIX i think it is more for people that dont have a PS3 yet

Is this really necessary? Well, I guess if people want to buy it. But my current PS3 works just fine now. I definitely won't be getting one, especially not at the price point.

@Awesome-Possum Is that available for the slim? I wasn't able to afford the first batch, and the Australian version didn't have proper emulation for it anyway.

My 120GB Slim is still running like a absolute beast, so I'll think I'll pass. I might upgrade my HDD though. =P

So let me get this straight. After almost 6 months since my 80gb PS3 stopped working, on the week that I'm going to buy a new PS3, Sony comes out with this and no backward compatibility? Yeah, this isn't worth waiting for.

Im going to go out on a limb here. Unless they do not sale a PS3 now at a lower price, or People in japan need to use less electricity or this version has BC. I am hoping its with BC and hope it comes here for $299.99

Sony PLEASE don't forget about PS2 legacy support, you know the console that garnered you in millions of unit sales in the first place? Either put it back in this new SKU and release it overseas or at the very least confirm it for PS Vita. Really annoys me that my 60GB YLOD on me all those months ago. The slim is great and all but I miss playing FFX without having to swtich to the PS2. :(

FusionRain

Kinda pricey. Don't care about weight but less power is good. I'm sure the biggest change with this is completely different "keys". It won't get hacked as easy or with the same method.

A lighter light PS3... As always, shameless pricey at release

Only an AV cable? I should think a stereotypical tech giant like Japan would have access to HD TVs produced by Vizio, Sony, etc. Not particularly surprised to see this. Sony has been putting out model after model of PS3s, what's one more? Not saying there's anything wrong with that, either. If it sells, it sells. Get mad at the people buying the product if you've got an issue with it, not the manufacturer... I would like to see backwards-compatibility return, but that's just dreaming at this point :p

They should call it PS3 Slimmer :P

@JimmeyBurrows you are 100% correct sir. If hackers already have a ps2 emulator running on jb ps3's then why can't sony do it... Oh I guess we forgot that Sony wants to sell us the same games again... Tomb raider hd trilogy Prince of persia hd collection God of war hd collection Ico and Shadow of the colosus hd collection.. crash bandicoot hd collection... only fanboys will say its okay.. but me? I remember playing God of war 2 on my original phat 60 gig with full ps2 back wards compatibility with the option to upscale, and the game looked flawless... only fanboys will say its okay.... regular gamers will say we're tired of being milked...

@ReaverGod666, things work differently in Japan. The price of the 3DS is about $300 in Japan and it is $250 in the U.S.A.
