New Payday 2 DLC Riffs on Battlefield's Marketing

The Gage Assault Pack is being announced with some decidedly Battlefield-esque promotional materials.

Payday 2 will be receiving some new downloadable content this week. To promote it, developer Overkill Software has set up a page on its website that bears more than a little resemblance to the marketing for Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4.

Battlefield 3's promotional soldier, for comparison

The Gage Assault Pack is a relatively standard DLC release, if one sure to be appreciated by those continuing to play Payday 2. (Gage is a wheelchair-bound character from the game.) What makes it interesting is the way Overkill is advertising it, with music that sounds a lot like certain Battlefield tracks, and a promotional image and video that is undeniably Battlefield-like.

This isn't meant as a knock on Battlefield--both Overkill and Battlefield developer DICE are located in Sweden. Overkill acknowledges this is an homage to Battlefield, writing on the game's Steam Community page, "This is us at Overkill tipping our hats to a fellow Swedish game developer."

Payday 2 players won't have long to wait before getting their hands on the Gage Assault Pack; it's scheduled for release on Steam this Thursday, September 4, for $4.99. You can check out a list of what's included below, with more details on the weapons and customization options set to be revealed on Wednesday on Thursday.

  • 4 weapons
  • 4 melee weapons
  • 28 mods
  • 4 masks
  • 4 materials
  • 4 patterns
  • 10 achievements

I "tip my hat off" to both companies and the Swedes. What a class act.

Instead of suing each other and showing hatred over money they show love. Brilliant!

To those saying hard line is a rip off, hardline is actually based the concept for Battlefield Urban Combat, a cancelled game that was supposed to be the debut of the Battlefield series.

This needed an article as much as I need to praise everything that involves Sweden, because I live there.

Yet another DLC for the PC, before the Xbox 360 has even seen a patch, let alone any DLC for this very short game.  Overkill, 505 Games, and Starbreeze suck a$$ for not taking care of business.  I won't pay them a future dime, since I can't trust them.

They need to patch the console versions or they can go f*** themselves

I enjoyed BF4 cop and robbers much more than Payday 2, so hopefully they copied that as well.

They need to add way more heists and improve the gameplay for me to be even remotely interested in playing this game again. It was basically a "stand here and defend this safe for 20 minutes" simulator last time I played. After 10 hours of playing the same heists, shooting the same enemies and standing in the same place getting bored I decided to find something else to play online with my friends.

It's a great idea for a game that's terribly executed. That and it used to take up something crazy like 32gb of hard drive space.

What wierd DLC they have released... I mean some of it is fantastic (new heists, planning,etc..) but then some of it is just terrible with only a few new guns or masks,etc..

What they should have done imo is mostly new heists, because some of the new ones they have added have been fantastic.

More guns and masks, damm man, I want more heists.

Is it really an homage, or is it a comment on Battlefield Hardline being similar to the Payday series?

Probably the most funny expansion I've seen

LOL. They know.

Would be nice to see the next Battlefield game NOT glorify military service. So tired of these military shooters pretending that soldiers "save the world" instead of exploring the territory that these soldiers are sometimes doing terrible things in foreign countries in the name of "freedom". Tired of shooting brown people in games cause they are "bad".

Get some Spec Ops: The Line into our BF, and show that sometimes, you just aren't the hero...

The wheelchair resembles the crippled state bf4 is in.

@spacecadet25 You're joking right? You know how much developers hate Microsoft? You know that up until 2013 Microsoft was charging developers tens of thousands of dollars just to update their games on the Xbox...even if they were a company run by 1 person.

@RogerioFM

Yeah, I don't know why they even waste their time with new guns at this point.  It's not like they have nothing to do, they have shown zero console support for Xbox 360, and very little for PS3.  It would seem they have more important things to do, such as try to not totally alienate console customers from all of their future games by starting to support this game.

But no, even more guns for PC.

@madcat_mikie I don't have a problem shooting bad guys regardless of their colour. White, brown, yellow, blue, green... I think you look too much into it.

@madcat_mikie lol. Battlefield is played because of multiplayer, not terrible singleplayer campaigns

@Psycold @spacecadet25 +1 Certification on Microsoft's platforms is basically the #1 thing you hear devs complain about.  Not really Overkill's fault that you chose a shitty platform.

@Spartan_418 @bldgirsh I have on the PC. It was just me paying homage to the game. (Can't forgive them on how terrible the game was the first couple of months. I mean even the first two weeks of the release the game wasn't even playable.)

"Not really Overkill's fault that you chose a shitty platform."

Dumb.  Overkill released on that platform, so supporting paying customers on that platform is their problem.

God, I hope I never come anywhere near a business you own or work at.
