New Ouya console every year - Report

Company to release new version of Android console every year to leverage component price drops; Double Fine, Words with Friends co-creator bringing games to system.

A new version of the $99 Android-powered Ouya mini-sized console will be released every year, according to Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman. Speaking to Joystiq at D.I.C.E. 2013 this week, Uhrman said the company will iterate every year to take advantage of price drops for components.

"As it relates to iterating the console and refreshes, our strategy is very much similar to the mobile strategy. There will be a new Ouya every year," Uhrman said. "There will be an Ouya 2 and an Ouya 3. We'll take advantage of faster, better processors, take advantage of prices falling. So if we can get more than 8GB of Flash in our box, we will. And in so doing, make sure that all games are backwards compatible."

Uhrman said Ouya games will be tied to a user's account, meaning that if a customer upgrades on a yearly basis, their content will transfer over to the new machine. The first version of the Ouya console will be available in June online and through several major retailers.

In addition, Uhrman announced a partnership with Tim Schafer's Double Fine Productions that will see the company's new game Reds be released on the Ouya. In addition, Words with Friends co-creator Paul Bettner's Verse Studio is working on a game for the console.

If this is true why the fuck should I even buy one when they immediately devalue their own console by changing it every year....

Not easy to preach this in the console word when people are already used to change their console every X amount of years.

How often Apple releases a new iPad or iPhone? And they still sell millions each time they release a new device.

I had such high hopes for Ouya; can somebody please tell me what is the point of buying one if a newer better one is coming out next year? i am honestly starting to hate where console gaming is going; apparently Xbox 720 is supposed to need a permanent online connection to work

Unless you HAVE to upgrade every year this is not a bad thing. Its a good thing, it means that for the people who want to just have a $100 console they can have one, for the people who want to keep up to date with there tech they can do that. The older one might not be as flashy but as long as they can still play the same games its not a huge deal. Its just like PC parts, they release better ones every year but that doesn't mean every year you buy a new rig.

Makes sense to me.  And since it's only a hundred bucks, you can enjoy your system for a few years and a couple years from now get a new one that's CHEAPER and way more powerful.

Cheap, powerful, AND open for me to play with and be able to install emulators and all that stuff?  Sign me up please.

I don't mean this with any offense intended, but I wish the article was written a little more clearly.

The 360 and PS3 both have more than half a dozen upgrades. Not to mention the huge gap in the launch prices between those two and the Ouya. It seems 90% of the people in this comment section don't quite fully grasp that you can buy (at least) five/six Ouya's yearly for the same amount of money that a PS3 first cost.

Funny, it's not even out yet it's already outdated.

Buy a PC or get a new next gen console.

I recommend they try to sell a few the FIRST year outside of their kickstarter obligations before speaking of years to come.

I personally do not know anyone who wants to play all those crappy "time killer" phone/tablet games on their TV.

@GrilledCharlie and heavier! The dual shock 2 and 3 are so flimsy!

Pcs are great. But Xbox has about 1000 games0. Ps4 about 800. Pc only had about 200 games I the same time span.

That's all fine with me as long as they do ONE thing. Dynamic pricing plans. Skyrim 60$ okay! 20 hours games no way! Direct digital download sales like steam. Direct download on Xbox are often twice the price of the priced from amazon.

Every year? I'll just buy a smart phone.

I don't see the point in this thing other then the fact its cheep, a steam box is a much better option it too will be open to upgrades. I don't understand why everyone is getting hyped for PS4 and Xbox720 when steam box wont have any issues with backwards compatibility. starts off with large selection of games.(you will be able to drop a new graphics card in it when ever you want)

I have a PC my self , I will also wait tell tell have released a lot of exclusives and a price drop before thinking about buying a ps4. I wont be considering a Xbox if all they are making is Halo and gears of war. they need more then 2 franchises so convince me to buy one

well considering they want you to "hack" it ......never mind I knew this thing was a joke....

So each time a new Tegra processor comes out thijs thing will need a new update basically.

Although according to the propaganda for Tegra 4, that isn't going to really be necessary until 4k displays become a a reasonable option for anyone that doesn't have $10k to flush down the toilet for an experimental new piece of tech.

Swoopalz

Lemme get this straight:
The Ouya costs $100. Further upgrades will most likely cost less, judging by Urhman's comments and how the industry works (or $100 if we're going to be extremely skeptical).
PS3 originally cost $500-600 US when it launched. It's upgrades cost anywhere from $300-500.

And there was no mention in the article that new Ouya's will be required to play newer games.

Soooooo... What are you all upset about again?

nate1222

As long as they maintain backward compatibility with software and perifferals (controllers)  I don't see it as a problem.

sure why not fanboys buy call of duty every year 2 of them this coming year lol

bkohary

If they really wanted to be different, how about combining Ouyas into a super mega Ouya with multiple processors/ram/cpus.

So newer games may require 3 Ouyas

BlendThree
BlendThree

I'm not sure how I feel about this news- They have been putting an awful lot of energy in explaining. convincing everyone that the Ouya is a dedicated console and not just another Android set top box, but following the mobile phone/ tablet market rather than the generation-based console market seems counter intuitive. I have to agree that fragmenting their OS into 1-year intervals will do this concept no favors.

tgwolf

I would think that they would want to DISsociate themselves from products like Apple, especially when they are just debuting and hoping to build a solid fan base...But then I'm a straight-shooter and free-thinker.

@IanNottinghamX

same reason why morons buy each and every new  i phone when it comes out. But that costs an arm and a leg this at least looks cheap and cheerful, so it will be considered a good move by most consumers .People like things being updated.

@inaka_rob you cant be more wrong PC has the largest library of any platform and always will.

Trust me get a Steam Box when they come out you have access to anything next gen that is not Sony or Microsoft exclusives. Steam, GOG Green man gaming and gamers gate, are all sites or apps you can use to buy games off that sell things on sale for a fraction that you will pay on a new console.

PC gets just as many exclusives as consoles again steam box will have access to them and will come with console style controllers.

I wish Valve will hurry up and get it to market before the PS4 and Xbox 720 come out. so gets a good chunk of the market

Jedilink109
Jedilink109

@inaka_rob Your comment makes no sense.  Not only does PC constantly get new games through Steam and GOG but new retail titles are coming out all the time.  Not to mention the fact that PC has an immense library of titles from the past 20-30 years to choose from anyway...

@inaka_rob Question is how many of those games are actuallly worth playing?! btw,Ps4?? I think u meant PS3!

@CP2077 First Steambox is not a console it is a miniPC and neither MS nor Sony insist u to buy their nextgen consoles so u better stick to ur dumbass PC

Jedilink109

@Swoopalz Video gamers are one of the most obnoxiously entitled groups out there today and feel they need to crap their pants about anything that comes out which could or may very slightly inconvenience them.  Ignore the fact that the system is ONLY a hundred bucks and that it's very open to hacking and full experimentation for the user.

I'm a gamer myself but dang, gamers are frickin goofy sometimes.

Killer6b9

@bkohary yeah stack them together or make them like transformers and make a robot super ultra deluxe mega Ouya!  lol...

Cruorem

@PDXmauler97 @IanNottinghamX The console itself is about as much as a collector's edition game, and given the rumoured price increases coming up with the new generation it may well be roughly the same amount as a standard game. Hardly a lot to shell out for an entire console when you put it in perspective.

CP2077
CP2077

@MatrixGamer78 @CP2077 typical brain washed console kid.

Steam box and next gen consoles will be almost the same why get mad at me for having a PC. I use it for work so throwing a graphics card in it is a no brainier. and whats the  difference between next gen consoles and steam box there booth basically tailored  to run to a TV and use controllers and play games on.

it will come with Linux so you don't have to spend on a Microsoft OS. Steam big picture mode is just like using a console. that's basically what it will be running on all the time

you also get accesses to steam sale deals and never have to worry about backwards compaiblty and get cheep upgrades to the System if you want them so games aren't held back for a decade like the PS3 Xbox 360 gen

MatrixGamer78
MatrixGamer78

@CP2077 Players as well as industry developers both r not intrested in Steambox. Players love to play games on console rather than PC.
