Funcom has announced a new Conan game that sounds quite different than the studio's Age of Conan PC MMO that still runs today. Called Conan Exiles, it's described as a multiplayer-focused open-world survival game that takes place "in the brutal lands of Conan the Barbarian."

You play as an "exile," left to fend for yourself in a "barbaric wasteland" that is ravaged by sandstorms with enemies all around you. Growing crops or hunting, harvesting resources for weapons and other tools, and building a place to live are some of your tasks. Funcom says you can also travel across a "vast world" either alone or with other players. For multiplayer, the game can be played on both private and public servers, while Funcom pointed out that a single-player mode will also be available.

"There is no better setting for an open-world survival game than the world of Conan," Funcom creative director Joel Bylos said in a statement. "Hyboria is a harsh and unforgiving land where only the strongest can survive while the weak are swiftly cut down. Whether it is hunting animals for food, fighting monsters and other players, or building entire settlements, we want to make sure players feel like they are really fighting to survive and prosper in the most brutal fantasy world ever."

In trademark Conan fashion, you can also expect Exiles to be somewhat brutal.

"Unleash your fury in savage, fast-paced combat and execute bloody and bone-crushing attacks that will see heads rolling and limbs flying," Funcom said. "Fight other players to dominate the exiled lands, and even call upon the wrath of the heavens to aid you by sacrificing enemy players on the alters of the gods."

Exiles will launch for PC through Steam Early Access this summer; a console version is also in the works, but Funcom did not provide any details on it outside of announcing its existence.

Funcom hasn't shared any screenshots for Exiles just yet, but you can check out a cinematic trailer above.
