New Lord of the Rings prequel won't have multiplayer, not coming to Wii U

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is in development "wholly as a single-player experience," developer says.

Upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor will not include any multiplayer and is skipping a release on Nintendo's Wii U, developer Monolith Productions has confirmed.

"Alas, no co-op. Shadow of Mordor is being crafted wholly as a single-player experience," the studio said on Twitter.

Regarding platforms, Monolith explained that the game is coming only to PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC. The developer did not explain why Wii U owners won't get to play the game, but it's possible the platform's shortcomings might be to blame.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is Monolith's second game based on J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy series, following 2012's MOBA Guardians of Middle-earth. Shadow of Mordor takes place exclusively in Mordor and has gamers playing as Talion, a Ranger with Wraith traits.

That's great, no multiplayer. Too bad for Nintendo and Wii U owners I guess.

I don't understand the "Thank god no Wii U" comments. If you own another console, how does it ruin your gaming experience if a release is made on the Wii U?

That doesn't mean I'm saying the game should be released on the Wii U--that's the developers choice.

very excited for this game, also very happy to see developers still embracing the true single-player rpg experience.

FACTS THAT TROLLS ARE IGNORING

1.The Wii U sold over five million units and is currently in the lead.

2.The Wii U has a superior library of games like:New Super Mario Bros. U, Super Mario 3D World World, Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Sonic Lost Worlds, Rayman Legends, and there's the upcoming games like Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, X, and there's the backwards compatibly to the Wii.

3. Trolls don't know how to read, thus how the facts are ignored.

4. The definition of trolling is purposely ignoring facts to bash a company as a way to try to try to upset fans.

5. Trolls are bias, which explains why the most vulgar attitudes from people that hate the Wii U gets a free pass.

6. Trolls have no dignity

Yay!  So few big games actually forgo the multiplayer nowadays.  Glad they are doing it and can actually focus on making a good campaign.

Oh thank god! No multiplayer to ruin this game.

I can't help looking at the screenshot of the main character shafting an orc in the neck, and thinking that the character just realized he left the oven on in the cottage before he went out.

Honestly they don't need to add the "not coming to the Wii U" line anymore. I honestly would be more shocked nowadays if a game does come to the Wii U then not, so its redundant.

While I love multiplayer, I'm kinda glad it won't be for this game.

No multiplayer, no Wii U.  All signs of a game that doesn't suck!

thank god there is no multiplayer. been a while since we had a solid single player game from a good franchise like lord of the rings. We all seen how bad war in the north was.

I'm glad they're casting the One Ring of tacked-on multiplayer into the fires of Mount Doom. They mentioned co-op but we all know if there was going to be multiplayer it would've been some stupid deathmatch that doesn't let your characters do half the things you can do in singleplayer.

Would have loved Co-op; love co-op in RPGs. Bit of a miss in my opinion.

The only games I've ever played in nintendo consoles are either nintendo games, or games that are usually found only on nintendo consoles, turn based jrpgs and  stuff like that, and I don't think many people buy nintendo consoles to play much else. Games like this one are great indeed, but they are not the reason one would get a nintendo console really.

Wow, after watching that. This looks absolutely fantastic.

Good I'm glad, this game will be epic and no MP is just the icing on the cake.

No multiplayer and no Wii U... this game is sounding better and better.

I really can't remember when i played a game that had both great single and multi-player. it's much better to focus. if i wanna play multiplayer i'll play gw2, tf2, dota, counter strike or any of the hundreds of games that were made for multiplayer.

Skipping the Wii U. When there is no on-line multiplayer? Usually it is the opposite. It should be an easy port for them.

AWESOMESAUCE!! I hope more game developers do this. Multiplayer really just isn't necessary in every game.

OK, forget what I said about hoping it's linear. I watched the trailer, it looks great!

Another day, another third-party developer snubbing their nose at the Nintendo consumer.  It's a good thing I bought a Nintendo for Nintendo games.  It's to be expected at this point.  The same thing has been going on since N64.  Please.  I don't need a "Nintendo needs to get with the times and mirror the PS4 and Xbox One" speech.  Nintendo just needs to do more of what they do best.  Make awesome games.

RuthlessRich

Great! I hope it's also fairly linear, like the Two Towers and Return of the King games that accompanied the films. Love me some good straightforward historically based violence. Those are the kind of games that I come back to again and again. It's not that I've never enjoyed multiplayer but it rarely keeps me interested for more than a few weeks.

so in other words...its Assassins Creed of the Rings, minus the multiplayer. So basically it isnt worth $65 and your release will suck because people refuse to pay that much for standalone games that are under 9 hours long.

What isn't coming to the Wii U other than Nintendo platformers and Zelda ? This isn't really news...

TheAgingGamer

Good..there are too many multi-player games as it is. A good single player game is the reason I'm a gamer, and any development time spent on multi-player is a waste of time and funds in my opinion (with a few exceptions). Make a good single player game that people will want to play multiple times and they won't trade it in, which, let's face it, that is the reason most studios put multi-player into games anyways.

My interest has been bumped up a few notches with this news.

I'm hoping this game will be good, but I'm not going to hold my breath on it.

Hmm, no tacked-on multiplayer. I think things are looking up for this game already and the gameplay video was pretty good as well. Glad it's not another Batman: Arkham Origins style "This is not just tacked-on multiplayer" which turned out to be just another tacked-on MP like Tomb Raider had before it.

When will developers realise that if I wanted to play an MP game I would just play an MP game to begin with? Shoehorning it into a single-player game won't change anything.

First I want to say welcome back Eddie, I hope you enjoy your Vacation and all.

Back on topic: I never been impress with any of the Lord of the Rings games but I do love and watch all the movies but the games never got my attention so with that said, I'll pass on this and wait for the last Hobbits movie.

@chev7758

1. When was the Wii u released? And still no one's coming to the rescue.

2. It *seems* that the ony one's making games for the Wii U is the company that made the Wii U in the first place.

3. About 90% of the world is literate, I doubt that a fraction of those can somehow operate a computer yet cannot read.

4. You put "to try" twice.

5. and 6. are ironic.

In fact, if I read the whole thing with sarcasm in mind, the whole thing is kind of funny. So thanks for that.

@Shantmaster_K  it's not surprising and understandable. the game's dev team is pretty stretched thin and well wii u is under selling right now.

That aside I find it a bit spiteful to put  npt coming to wii u in the title instead of just listing what platforms its coming to. Not that nintendo fans are missing out odds are they also have a playstation or xbox too

@AwkwardTurtle42  this game looks similar to assassins creed and honestly assassins creeds multiplayer is awesome its refreshing to play because its just so different from other online multiplayer games on consoles
