New In Minecraft: 1.5 Redstone Update

MINECON 2012: Analogue redstone, better minecarts, and a host of bug fixes make up the latest Minecraft update.

One of the biggest cheers at this year's Minecon came from the announcement of version 1.5, which--as Mojang studio lead Jens Bergensten revealed--is called The Redstone Update. It marks the start of a set of new, more focused updates from the Minecraft team that centre around a single new feature, or theme. And, in more good news for fans, the team is planning to release those updates every two months.

The Redstone update isn't the best start for Mojang's new release schedule, though. Originally planned for a holiday launch, keen crafters will now have to wait until January to get their hands on it. At least there's plenty to look forward too--if you're a keen user of redstone at least. It aims to make the ore--which is used to create many of the wonderful mechanical contraptions in the game--more predictable and consistent.

It's doing so by changing the way redstone behaves. The plan is to give it a variable signal strength--something Mojang calls " analogue", and add a new capacitor block. The new block will work similarly to a repeater, with one input and one output, but it will only produce full output when its input level is high enough. Capacitors can be configured by players to decide exactly how much input is required to push an output.

As for its use, Bergensten gave the example of making weighted pressure plates that change their output signal strength depending on pressure, and detector rails that have a stronger output when a minecart is filled. That signal could then be forwarded to a capacitor block, which would activate when the cart was filled, opening up all kinds of possibilities for automated rail and loading systems.

The minecarts themselves will see improvements too. Bergensten cited mods that use pipes to transport items around, claiming that minecarts "could be so much better". Some of the planned improvements include special track to unload freeloaders like pigs, new systems for filling and emptying chests, and the ability to link carts together so a furnace cart could pull along a chest.

Other planned improvements include a daylight detector (which could be used in conjunction with a capacitor to make a type of solar panel), fireworks for New Years Eve, and a new Nether-based ore that capacitors will be made from. Several bugs will be stamped out too, including the south/east rule. That means the timing of some complex designs will be affected, and those that rely on the block update design glitch may not work at all.

In typical Mojang style, Bergensten was happy to speculate on the future of Minecraft. Some of the possible improvements include a new, beautiful dimension that appears after killing the end boss; bags for saddled pigs; a new combat system; updates to the snow biome; a new, a faster client for better performance on newer systems; and fixes to the lighting bugs around trees.

Watching these questions is like watching an engineering major trying to do standup comedy.

they will create Minecraft for us playstation fans give it time and you'll soon see on n4g.com or gamespot.com Minecraft is finally coming to (NOT) PS3 but i suspect that it will be a PS4 title. because Minecraft can run just fine with 512mb of ram no question about that but the ps3 has 256mb so there's a difference there but the PS4 will most likely have 1024mb of ram on board graphics ram and probably the same on the processor its just my guess nothing official.

as long as i have a PC to play Minecraft on then i have (NO) problam waiting to see what Mojang can do for us Playstation fans and for Minecraft.

i hope they add more items to decorate houses with and maybe even add some mods from tekkit into the vanilla game. more ores and some basic machines and wire would be a very nice and useful touch.

These guys are great programmers and real nice guys minus some of their audience.  Serious though, PR host /speaker would be an excellent addition to the company payroll to keep things moving forward at an even pace.

Too bad this update won't be for Xbox for like a year...

I wish they would make the game load more evenly. When there are big chunks missing in the landscape it can be bothersome. It's especially annoying when you're traveling on a minecart and the world loading has a hard time catching up to you.

If they could just get Eloram to work with them and incorporate red power into vanilla minecraft, that would be sweet!

Game needs a purpose built engine optimised for the logic. They are too scared to create a wait time in case they lose fans. They also won't take anything from an outside source or hire anyone to work on a purpose built game engine on the side. Minecarts are a crap nonsensical substitute to pipes, Lapis is useless and has muddy colours in it instead of being a solid blue, avatars are crappy low resolution and too large because of it.

It's great that Mojang will continue to develop and add to Minecraft, as it has a lot of potential.  I actually want to see Minecraft 2 with a very much more polished and slick look, but that won't be for many years I'm sure, if at all.

This has the potential to add so many new things to the game. Even with the current relatively basic features people still make some pretty cool stuff. Whilst the update might seem like quite a boring one, it will undoubtedly add a whole new dimension to minecraft creations.

I never really use much redstone, so a pretty not exciting update for me..

Always excited for future updates though! The new dimension should be cool!

Basically they want to make redstone activating pieces that activate only at certain values , auto unloading carts , carts linking, and a redstone activating timer.

@bluebird08 Erm they never planned on a PS3 version? not sure why they wold want to, minecraft sucks on xbox in comparison to PC

 @GunnyHath

Somehow I dont think they will ever make a whole new minecraft from the ground up, I think this game will just continue to evolve.

@jedediahpelland  @GunnyHath Sure they will, after some time. Right now of course they'll simply update Minecraft, but in the future I have no doubt that they'll make a sequel. There are already many people that wish to see it made in C++ or remade from scratch for a variety of reasons. Don't forget, they'll only update Minecraft as long as it's profitable. This isn't WoW where people buy the game at $60+ with expansions of $60+ and subscriptions of hundreds of dollars. This is a single-purchase indie title.
