New Hearthstone Expansion Might Be Called Whispers of the Old Gods

I hear "Whispers of the Old Gods," and all I can think of is that Ying Yang Twins song.

Hearthstone developer Blizzard Entertainment said it's planning to unveil a special Hearthstone announcement at an upcoming tournament, and now we know what that might entail. Fans have done some detective work and found that the forthcoming reveal could be a new expansion for the card collecting game called "Whispers of the Old Gods."

Redditor That_Azzin recently spotted what they believe is an advertisement for the new expansion. The picture they posted shows a city wall in Brooklyn, partly painted with the words "Whispers of the Old Gods." The painting fits the Hearthstone style, and you can even see a goblin and what looks to be a tentacle near the bottom of the mural.

YouTuber Disguised Toast has also highlighted some possible hints in a video he posted that might point to the new expansion (via PC Gamer). Toast notes that Blizzard has changed the five cards on Hearthstone's official website to a selection that is connected to "the Old Gods"--Void Terror, Faceless Manipulator, Cult Master, Mind Blast, and Dark Wispers. When the company was gearing up for its previous expansion, Blackrock Mountain, it replaced the homepage cards with characters who were connected to the area of the same name. Toast also brings up a rumor posted by Powned.it in February, which said the expansion would be connected to the Old Gods and would possibly be called "Whispers of the Old Gods."

Toast isn't the only Internet sleuth who has found some possible information. The Hearthstone subreddit has dug up a leak that happened in 2015, which might reveal some of the cards in the upcoming expansion. Redditor PlayTank notes that some of the cards in last year's leak ended up in the League of Explorers expansion, and they say that other cards like Dark Summoner, Sinister Cultist, and Bloodaxe Ritualist "could very easily be related to an Old Gods expansion."

Hearthstone-focused site Blizzheart posted an invitation it received from Blizzard; the invitation says "There are whispers around the Tavern… Come listen closesly and discover the next Hearthstone expansion at a special live-streamed event." The date on the invitation sets it at 10 AM PST on March 11--this is the exact same time the Americas Winter Championship starts.

When asked to comment, a Blizzard representative replied that they do not comment on rumors and speculation.

We'll report back with more details as they're announced tomorrow.
