A new animated movie based on the iconic Garfield comic strip is in the works. Alcon Entertainment, which is behind the upcoming Blade Runner reboot, acquired the rights to make the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Fans may be happy to learn that Garfield creator Jim Davis will work on the movie as an executive producer. According to the report, Alcon is hoping that movie is just the first of many animated films based on the lasagna-loving cat.

It won't be the first Garfield movie, as two live-action/CG films-- Garfield: The Movie and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties--came out in the mid-2000s. In those films, Bill Murray voiced Garfield, while Breckin Meyer playued Garfield's owner, Jon Arbuckle.

Despicable Me and The Angry Birds Movie producer John Cohen is producing the untitled Garfield movie.

No mention was made in the report of a release date, director, or cast for the upcoming Garfield movie.

The Garfield franchise, which debuted in 1978, has also spawned video games. One of these included the amazingly titled 2010 Wii game The Garfield Show: Threat of the Space Lasagna.
