New Dragon Quest game in development, still no word on Dragon Quest X

Series creator Yuji Horii may have spilled the beans before he was meant to.

Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii has confirmed the "next" Dragon Quest game is already in development, although he unfortunately didn't provide any information beyond that.

According to Game Jouhou (as translated by Gematsu), Horii revealed that Square Enix is "making the next" Dragon Quest game during during the Niconico Super Conference 3 this weekend. He wasn't specific about whether this would be a proper, numbered release (Dragon Quest XI would be next, if so), nor did he indicate what system or systems it would be coming to. The last two numbered DQ games have been for Nintendo platforms.

It's noted in the original report that fellow Dragon Quest developers Yosuke Saito and Anzai Takashi seemed to look surprised by Horii's revelation. If his announcement regarding this new game wasn't planned, it could explain the lack of any of the essential details we'd like to know.

The most recent game in the Dragon Quest series, Dragon Quest X, has yet to be released outside of Japan. The subscription-based MMO originally launched in August 2012 on Wii before being ported to Wii U, PC, and Android. An international release has been discussed but never confirmed, and we remain in the dark as to whether the game will ever be seen in other markets.

Now that we know the long-running Dragon Quest series is getting a new entry, what would you like to see from it? Let us know in the comments below.

NOT another MMO or handheld.  If they bring it to PC and a main console, that'd be awesome, but just bringing it to a main console would be major moves in the right direction.  9 was good, but a huge step back from 8, and 10, after Square Enix's "success" with FF11 and 14, was an obvious mistake from the beginning.

Wasn't DQX an MMO that didn't even do that well in Japan? What can it cost them to simply make another single layer RPG with at least decent production values like DQ8..?

DQ7 on 3DS for international release... make it happen square! Make happen what fans want, not more FF13 games no one wants.

I heard that DQ X isn't as good as previous games in the series because the, now former CEO, wanted the game to have a online multiplayer to make it appealing to COD kids, or something like that.

This whole Westernization strategy is a fucking curse on Japanese gaming.

It's a shame SE still continues to see DQ as primarily a 'Japanese' franchise. I was pretty bitter with DQ 9 being a DS exclusive after having loved DQ8 on the PS2. After hearing DQ10 wasn't even planned for an international release, I kind of just gave up on the series.

There's definitely a large western audience for DQ, I wished they acknowledged this. Square Enix's management is still not up to scratch and they need to do something drastic before they whittle away any goodwill they still have left with gamers.

The PC benchmark runs great on my laptop. Please reconsider Square Enix. Still waiting on Sega's PSO2 also.

I know we live in the era when everyone wants every game for every console, but let's look at DQ's history:

Dragon Quest 1-4 (Original) - NES exclusives
Dragon Quest 5-6 (Original) - SNES exclusives
Dragon Quest 7-8 (Original) - Sony platform exclusives
Dragon Quest 9-10 (Original) - Nintendo exclusives

Now, given the fact that Dragon Quest X has been out for over two years, and only reached the 1M units sold mark this past March, it's not likely to be localized in the West.

By comparison, the DQ VII 3DS remake saw 1M units sold in the very first week.

The lesson that might be learned?  Dragon Quest as an MMORPG isn't something that any market really wants.

I hope and pray it's for something other than just Nintendo products although I doubt it. Dragon Quest VIII which was for PS2 is still my favorite Dragon Quest game and pretty high on my list of all time favorite RPG it just did everything so great and fantastic in my opinion.

I'm kind of curious: since the Wii's multiplayer servers are getting shut down, does that mean there is zero chance of seeing the Wii version if it is localized?

Look! it's old news that DQX was going to be online, geez! they announced that when they announced the games release, get over it already, I for one would like to give it a try before I knock it down into the gutter, but in english, chances of that happening is well... practically NEVER! so.. as for DQXI, (or whatever its going to be called), yet again japan will probably royaly do us english speaking folk over AGAIN and not give it an english localization but hey! never threat.. cos if they don't give us what we want then im sure "DQtranslations" will give us an illegal english patch in a few years down the line.. LOL!

I hope for something along the lines of VIII again.

They probably don't want FF14 and this game competing in the US...which really sucks because I love Dragon Quest.

But SE was going to listen to the fans.  What does that mean to them?   More MMO's and more action rpgs with excessive cut scenes, and more linear gameplay because that's what people want right?

Really hoping it's a Wii U exclusives, and that it makes it to the states. The Wii U needs as much games as it can get. And if they leave Fatal Frame exclusive to Japan again, I'm gonna go crazy.

Nice to see that something is in the workers. I would like to see the 3ds remake of DQ VII get a NA release and a remastered release of DQ VIII on the Vita. I don't think NA will ever see a release of DQ X, there is just not enough people intrested.

Haven't played a DQ game since DQ8.  Still waiting for the next PlayStation DQ game SE but clearly you're ignoring a good 50% of your DQ fanbase.  Oh well.

As long as it is not an MMO.

Thanatos2k

They've hurled this once great series into the gutter.  First they make it multiplayer focused in 9, and then an MMO in 10 that they don't even localize.

Go screw yourselves, Square.

@TheMatrixCBC  You get it. Perhaps DQ would do better outside Japan and even profit outside that region if they sold them as compilations. Sell them as 2 games at $60 (in the US and the equivalent pricing elsewhere) and advertising it as 2 full games at a reduced price to attract people. Porting is super cheap and these days, localizing games in other languages is no problem for SE. If it works the games could sell more that way than they ever would have by themselves. I mean, the FFXII demo did sell copies of DQVIII back in the day. It's worth one final shot I'd say and then if it doesn't work I'd agree with SE that it's more or less a lost cause making DQ a high enough seller outside Japan. Although, it seems like the popularity of the series has been waning in recent years even in Japan.

@Thanatos2k Why do people think that DQIX was a multiplayer focused game?  Yes it had a multiplayer element to it but it was by no means the focus and the entire game could be fully enjoyed in single player.  As far as DQXI though I would like to see another fully fleshed out single player adventure.  Also, I'd much rather have the 3DS remake of DQVII before DQX.

@Thanatos2k  if you want a quality game, you shoud try Full Metal Alchemist on Ps2........such a joke from Square. Even tgames you get for free in boxes of cereals are better

TheMatrixCBC

@xOmniCloudx @TheMatrixCBC  Quite the contrary - Dragon Quest has been GAINING interest in Japan, primarily because they are saturated in it.  When DQ VII 3DS was released, Dragon Quest was literally everywhere - 7-11, McDonald's, Department Stores - every retailer had their own customized "chart," with items that were customized to fit their company's theme.  You can only achieve that type of vertical integration (to use an horrific term) if your brand is so thoroughly tuned into a nation's gaming identity.  The game, itself, sat atop both the physical and download charts for several months.

Beyond just the games, Japan sees bi-monthly releases of new Japan exclusive Dragon Quest merchandise, from jigsaw puzzles to plushes, to cups, saucers, and flatware.  Most recently, they released three square area rugs (a staircase, a warp, and a swamp tile - I own the first two).

That said, DQ X just hasn't caught on, despite being offered on the Wii, Wii U, and PC.  What SE failed to grasp was just how discerning Japanese fans of DQ are; they seem to think, "Well, if they'll buy 'Slime Mori Mori 3,' they must be willing to buy ANYTHING DQ related."  Unfortunately, the MMORPG was not in the cards for DQ.

Square-Enix has, for the past seven years, failed on several fronts, primarily because the management seems to live in a bubble.  They've released a series of visually stunning, yet substance-free games that serve mostly as unsatisfying appetizers, when their fanbase wants a full meal.  I think it's fair to say that, at least in the West, Square-Enix has little chance of fielding any sort of a comeback without going back to the core of what made them amazing in the 90s - high quality JRPG games chock full of content that DOESN'T require a DLC purchase, with story-driven plotlines, innovative ideas, but with the traditional forms still present to inform the design choices (turn-based battle; ATB gauges; characters that are likable and whose stories are compelling).

I fear that, after four years of exhausting their goodwill on the main FF series with XIII, they may have ruined the appetites for "new" Final Fantasy entries, while their fans clamor for remakes of games from better days.

ahpuck

@Mandrew257 @ahpuckI wasn't too big into Persona or Shin Megami Tensei. I did play them, but just not my cup of tea.

Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

@The_Bones @Thanatos2kRegardless, those multiplayer elements shoved it onto a handheld platform, crippling the game.  Instead of being a full console entry, we got the handheld treatment.

The_Bones
The_Bones

@Thanatos2k @The_Bones The DS being popular is what put it on a handheld platform not the multiplayer elements.  Dragon Quest games are usually released on whatever the most popular system is at the time.  It honestly won't surprise me if the next main DQ game is on the 3DS since out of all the newest systems it has the highest user base.
