New details on Xbox One game Sunset Overdrive emerge

Insomniac's upcoming Xbox One-exclusive will not feature drivable cars; world has been designed to reward players for vertical traversal.

by

In an effort to keep fans up-to-date with upcoming Xbox One-exclusive Sunset Overdrive, developer Insomniac Games has launched a weekly video program called "Sunset TV." The first episode went live yesterday and it contains a few new details about the game. First, though you may have noticed some cars in the recently released Sunset Overdrive gameplay trailer, you will not be able to drive these vehicles.

"You cannot drive cars in Sunset Overdrive, mainly because you're the only vehicle you need. All these other cars, all that other business, that would just slow you down," Insomniac Games community manager Brandon Winfrey says.

The video also touches on Sunset Overdrive's traversal system, which sees players quickly moving through the city by bouncing on cars, attaching to power lines, and running on walls.

"One thing we really wanted to do in Sunset Overdrive is make the traversal as active as possible," Winfrey says. "So what we did was build the city in a way that the fastest way to get places was to actually combo your movement options."

He went on to say that Sunset Overdrive's world has also been designed with verticality in mind, and that players will be rewarded for utilizing the high-up traversal options.

Next week's episode of Sunset TV will focus on the game's "Amp" system. These are special modifiers you can apply to your weapons and character.

Sunset Overdrive launches this fall exclusively for Xbox One. For more on the game, be sure to read GameSpot's previous coverage.

Driving is so mainstream. I use vertical traversity, you probably haven't heard of it.

It will be interesting to see Microsoft manufacture hype for this game....

I usually suck at chaining/combining moves together.

I actually wasn't even thinking about driving the cars. I figured with so many enemies on the ground trying to get you, the best place to be would be on top of the cars, power lines and buildings. Game remids me of DR3, but with a different approach. Seems you'll also be able to change your weapons just like DR3 as well.

I watched the gameplay video and saw the cars and never once thought I might be able to drive them.

This game looks like Crackdown, infamous, Jet Set Radio and Dead Rising all miced into one. Looks like so much fun I can't wait.

They're really pushing this game aren't they? It looks really fun and that's most important to me. My only concern is that it seems quite a bit like Dead Rising, which is another Xbox exclusive. With the ridiculousness and fun ways to kills zombies/zombie-like enemies, they're going to find a hard time coexisting. If this kills Dead Rising in sales, then DR might have to take a more serious approach, but that'll turn it into another bland zombie killer. All-in-all, I really think this game could kill off the DR franchise (and I'm a pretty big DR fan), which is basically Xbox getting a new IP but killing an old one.

Cars are overrated, flying is were it's at.

(Up in the sky, it's a Bird, it's a Plane, no it's: Sunset Overdrive)

@shinjuki  As a PlayStation gamer I concur with your statement....thats a disgusting behavior from gamers but however to be really really honest, this type of nasty and pathetic behavior is a LOT more prominent in PC gamers but thats not to say it isn't to be seen in Xbox or Wii fanbois..

@shinjuki You must have been asleep in 2013, when IG released the best R&C game for a long time.

@eternaldragoonx I agree, this looks great. If I was swimming in cash I'd buy an X1 to experience this (assuming it actually turns out to be good in the end, but I am confident it will be). But right now I'm not out buying any new consoles unfortunately

@steve_esquire  Dead Rising is a slow game on foot, for me anyways. I like dead rising for its humor. I prefer the pace and style of this more.

I see the similarities, but this game doesn't look like it will play at all like DR.    Even if it is just Infamous meets DR, that is enough of a distinction that they can coexist.  TLOU is little more than Uncharted with zombies when you get down to it.

I fail to see where they say next generation gaming is driving cars in video games. All their addressing is that you can because of such and such reason.

Don't worry, wall climbing will probably come to the PS4 next year. Greatness awaits.

Infamous SS beat you to it buddy... Neon will allow you to ascend any wall:)

@KBABZ @shinjukiNo he said Sony turned their back on IG because IG wanted to make games for more than one company

@shinjuki Well you said that IG turned their back on Sony, despite them releasing Into the Nexus last year, the best Ratchet game since A Crack in Time.

Yeah I remembered when I got neon powers. It only took me a few hours. It only took me 5 hours to get TV. That game is way too short and is nowhere near as good as Infamous 2.

@rasterror  Wall climbing was in Infamous 1.

Infamous 1 is on the PS4? Now if they remade Infamous 2 for the PS4 I might buy one.
