New "authentic" GRID announced; here's why it's not coming to Xbox One or PS4

Codemasters officially unveils Grid Autosport today for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC; says it passed the new consoles because "we don't want to rush."

by

Veteran racing game developer Codemasters today officially announced GRID Autosport, the next entry in the series due to launch June 27 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. It's not coming to Xbox One or PlayStation 4, and that's because Codemasters did not want to "rush" it, community manager Ben Walke said.

"Regarding next-gen, ultimately it comes down to a few things. The first is that we genuinely want our first next gen outing to be something really great, we don't want to have to rush and only put out a handful of tracks," he said on NeoGAF. "We've got 22 locations in Autosport, the bulk of those are real world circuits, would all those have made it if we were to support next gen? Doubtful."

"Secondly, we're working our tech for next-gen now, as such, we're not quite ready. Again, we don't want to rush," he added. "Thirdly, after GRID 2 we sort of had something to prove, we wanted to leave the 'old gen' with a bit of a bang so to speak."

GRID Autosport is described as an "authentic" racing game. In the lengthy announcement post on Codemasters' website, Walke admitted that GRID 2 strayed too far away from its core fanbase for some aspects.

"While we were patching GRID 2 and releasing new content, we were busy gathering feedback. We devoured the comment threads under articles about GRID 2 on gaming websites, took stock of our reviews, and of course, digested all the comments on our social channels and forums where we received direct feedback," he said. "It's this feedback that helped create GRID Autosport. With GRID Autosport we had the opportunity to make a much more focussed motorsport game."

The blog post also touches on the handling mechanics for GRID Autosport. Walke says "it's definitely not a full simulation," noting that it should feel "authentic, not clinical." GRID Autosport will include five "disciplines," and each has their own unique style and feeling. On top of this, every discipline has a number of dedicated series within them, so that "you don't just get five broad experiences, but also different racing experiences within those styles."

Finally, GRID Autosport contains 22 total locations with a combined route list of over 100. Some of these include Hockenheim, Sepang, San Francisco, Jarama, and Yas Marina. Codemasters points out that there are more circuits in GRID Autosport than there are in GRID and GRID 2 combined. The game also includes Career and multiplayer modes

I was burnt by Grid2, I'll wait for the reviews on this one.

Grid 2 was excellent. The only people who hated it were people who thought Grid 1 was a sim (which is weird, because it was anything but).

also PC is its first platform...thank GOD. Just dont F it up. Dont let it be riddled with optimization problems, graphical problems, lack of wheel support etc etc etc. talk to Ati and Nvidia and get the best ouf of them. like i said.....Dont F it up.

Fair point.. You should never rush a game, happy to hear they're not doing so... Sadly, I'm passing on this addition to the franchise.. But I look forward to their next-gen racing game, whenever it's released

GRID was an amazing racing game. Can't wait for a sequel worth the original game!

They will see in the long run this will hurt sales and eventually will port it to PS4/XB1...    This is just idiot especailly when you have game starved Console owners

Does this game have destruction? a racing game w/o destruction is boring...

The BS is a little thick around here, if they've coded it for PC there is no reason why they can't have it ready for the next gen consoles which are essentially last gen PC's.

With 81 million Xbox 360 and 82 million PS3's This game stands a better chance of turning a profit. While 7 million PS4 and 4 million Xbox ones is a great start. Still not enough

The PC version will be a shitty port from last-gen consoles: confirmed.

I've only got one question for them. Cockpit view. Yay or nay? No cockpit view is what made me pass on Grid 2.

THe devs of titanfall should have done the same thing

I won't touch this crap game since it's on last gen hardware. The only platform I would have bought it on was PC anyway but at least it might have had next generation graphics for my PC instead of the ugly muted colors that the Ego Engine produces.

I won't entertain the idea of buying one of their games until they come to next gen, Project CARS graphics have really spoiled me.

I don't understand when they say "we don't want to rush". Sounds like they rushed on this. GRID2 came out around the same time last year. I wasn't expecting another PS3/X360 release. Strange that they announce this 1 month before it's released. I'd rather them announce a next gen game now and then deliver around holiday 2014. There's no need to rush another game out the door imo.

I'm happy that they are listening to the fans.  Basically, they are doing the opposite than Polyphony Digital.

That being said, It don't understand why it would rush the game to release it on next gen.  Once the game is done, it's that hard to port it to another console?

Translation: ONE would be severely comprised when it comes to resolution and frame rate, so we decided to stay out of that arena.

They should really reboot the TOCA series. Trying to throw in something for everyone like these games seem to be doing lately just makes a blanketly mediocre experience for all.

Sorry, Assetto Corsa took my heart. I'm dUn with "arcadey" racing games.

I just ordered Grid 1 and 2 from Amazon coincidently. I've never played them before and I fancied having a go. Besides they were cheap and there is nothing new to play on either gen right now.

I am more interested in project cars to see what "Super secret" and "super awesome" use have they put cloud computing to

But this is a great news for 360/ps3 owners

@andmcq would you mind going into more detail ?

i loved the first grid but haven't got around to playing grid2 yet

as for the sim thing, im not sure what makes a racing game a arcade racer or a sim but if  i can tell that the cars handle differently and im spinning out when driving around corners then i would see the game as a racing sim.

@RainIsMyDrug  you care!!! you care so much you had to post here! to tell the whole world your a repressed grid fan you just dont know how to deal with your emotions...you cruise the street late at night to find grid fans so you can beat them up...to calm your repressed tendency but its ok...they are many like you and one day you will embrace your other side

@spenta They could have ported it to next gen but it really wouldn't have been a next gen game but a last gen port. I respect their choice they are clearing trying to work on their next gen version of their ego engine and its good not to rush it because the will likely use it for the whole gen like they did before so good on them for taking the time to do it right.

@spenta

Not really.  Just look at NBA 2K14.  The PC version looks much worse than the PS4 and Xbone versions. Why? Cause the PC version is just a slightly optimized port of the PS3 and 360 versions. This will most likely be the same deal.

@futureops I'm hearing good things about Assetto Corsa. It's still in Early Access ?

GSGuy321
GSGuy321

@flyincloud1116 That's what I'm thinking as well. With the last gen consoles you can get away anything.. 720p, low res textures etc because expectations are low.

With PS4/XB1 the expectations are higher, but the systems are weak. So it was probably difficult to get 1080p at 60fps.

Difference in expectations.

@zerofrust Nope,it is going to be pretty cool according to me(and slightly mad),and there is always halo pushing boundaries

West123

@gamespotpanayis  lols but you physically need the extra pixels to utilise 4K...1080p screens dont have enough pixels all you get is up scaling witch is fancy word for blurring

gamespotpanayis
gamespotpanayis

@spenta @Cloud_imperium @ChiefReaver  ermmmm.. a 4k texture does not relate to the monitor resolution directly...  It's the size of the texture.... so moving close reveals more of the detail.

@zerofrust @sleepyinmorning @Dannystaples14  yeah the war is over, because everyone knows the console's life cycle is only 6 months. Get with it son, the war rages on until the next console generation is announced. This will be an 8 year war, tell your wife and kids you aren't coming back!

And there was no war from the beginning, both consoles have downsides
