NeoGeo $200 handheld launches December 6

SNK Playmore launching NeoGeo X Gold Entertainment System with 20 games built in and expansion slot for more, as well as docking station and joystick for play on TVs or monitors.

SNK Playmore is getting back into the hardware market with the NeoGeo X Gold Entertainment System. Designed to play games from the original NeoGeo arcade and console gaming system, the retro portable is set for worldwide release December 6, with a $200 asking price.

Contrary to popular belief, 3 Count Bout is actually a pro wrestling game, and not a super-hot boy band.

The NeoGeo X Gold will come with 20 games built in and includes a game card slot to add more later. It also features a recharging and docking station with HDMI and A/V hookups so players can see the action on a TV set or other monitor. On top of that, the system will have its own joystick fashioned after the original NeoGeo home console controller, a 4.3-inch LCD screen, stereo speakers, and a standard headphone jack.

The system was first revealed in January in Japan, but the lineup of built-in games announced today differs from what was reported originally. The full list of preinstalled games confirmed for the NeoGeo X Gold follows below:

3 Count Bout
Art of Fighting II
Alpha Mission II
Baseball Stars II
Cyber Lip
Fatal Fury
Fatal Fury Special
King of Fighters '95
King of the Monsters
Last Resort
League Bowling
Magician Lord
Metal Slug
Mutation Nation
Nam 1975
Puzzled
Real Bout Fatal Fury Special
Samurai Shodown II
Super Sidekicks
World Heroes Perfect

I have the original NEO GEO AES. I bought back in 1997, when I was just starting my collection. I also have NEO GEO CD and Pocket. But, still, I'll have this one. SNK is one of my favorite game companies of all time. I may sound nostalgic when I say this, but SNK fighting and shoot'em-up games played an important role in my "gamer's education".

129.99 for just the handheld

And 199.99 for the gold edition that comes with a station dock and a full arcade stick to play with

Pretty cool! but I already have 360 that has neogeo classics on it.

I would definitely pick this up! In 1991 this was the "Rich Kid" system that you and your friends couldn't afford; and even now on eBay the original consoles still fetch ridiculous amounts of money.

It's def for the retro value. I have an SNK collection on my PSP that has nearly or all of those games. I think it was like $10-15 on the PSN store.

For the portable, and the controller? That's a good deal I'd say. Sure you can get it for free, but it's not the same as playing with your friends on a television, you know?

Is Neo Geo aware that their entire catalog is available on PSN and can be played on a PSP already?

Not worth it for $200 maybe for $100 or less sure. But that is over priced for sure......

Ehhh... I'm not that big on SNK to even consider buying this.

$200 is WAAAAAYYY too damn much. $100 MAYBE, but not $200. The Genesis Gopher goes for $40!

$200 for a console that's easily emulated with much cheaper hardware nowadays? Child please. *Yao Ming Face*

Is this a joke? 200 bucks for an arcade game playing system? Am I the only one that thinks this is ridiculous?

Welcome back Neo Geo! Looks like a terrific bundle with room for more. A 4.3inch screen will be perfect for the content they are going to provide. Any pics of the system yet? Definite could buy for me.

The original Neo Geo was a beast of a system for its time.  This could be quite cool

Anyone remember the Atomiswave? That Arcade Board was bad-ass man, it had Fist of the North Star and KOF XI.

As someone who still loves retro gaming and unique gaming entries, this Neo Geo anniversary system has me intrigued. I never had an original Neo Geo (only a Neo Geo Pocket Color), so this may have some solid nostalgia and collector value for me. I'm looking forward to learning more. I'm hoping for a decent amount of expansion games as well as wireless controllers. I want to be able to purchase a second controller to capitalize on some intense arcade action!

Now if only the Turbografx/PC-Engine would get an anniversary revival machine of similar calibur!

Forget this where's SNK Arcade Classics: Volume 2. You can't just make a volume 1 without volume 2.

SNK should release a new NeoGeo console to compete with Xbox 360, Wii U and the Playstation 3. If they're creating brand new releases and make it BC for old releases, then provide some type of download service with multimedia properties I'm sure they will succeed. Getting 3rd parties on board might be a good idea too.

I got my 3DS for less and it also came with twenty free games.  I like that it can be played on a TV.

Does Gamespot have any sources for this? When NGX was originally announced it was planned to be distributed by Blaze and not an official SNK product. They only gave the rights to make it to Blaze. The newsletters from existing distributors have not provided any information about these changes. I see that the website has since changed and there is no longer a latest press release link. This all sounds a bit sketchy.

The only reason this exists, because it is the 20th anniversary of the console.

I'm not a big handheld gamer, but the HDMI out sounds very appealing! I was looking to buy a Neo Geo for my game room, and with all the extras this comes with , it may be better to go with this, not to mention being able to hook it up properly to your flat panel.

FallenOneX
FallenOneX

If it comes with all of that, it might be worth it. The deciding factor is when will we see more games, and how much will they cost.

So basically its a officially licenses handheld ROM player... Can't say that I am impressed. I mean especially for $200, I just can't see paying that much for a handheld that only plays classic neo geo games. I see this as being a huge financial flop, just has that Nintendo Virtual Boy feel to it, limited market and way over priced.

OrNiGhTZ
OrNiGhTZ

hmm I'll take it for $79.99 -$99 bucks , SNK must be joking about selling this with a  $200 mark, heh even I wouldn't touch because of the ridiculous price tag , it's smart how they're trying to pull in more money though , people will eventually buy it cause  man it looks sweet , really does , only turndown for it though is the first list of 20 games and the  overrated price mark , but Metal Slug and Samurai showdown 2 on that list...can make an exception

This will only work if SNK develops new games for this new NEO GEO console/portable Seems reasonable that this could eventually catch on. The SNK Neo Geo back catalog is only so large. SNK has to bring new old school fighting and shoot them ups etc. In addition to the SNK classic. The original style Neo Geo joystick and system design is a nice touch. But new games must come for SNK long term success. $199.99 with 20 "pack in games" sort of is a good start.

Haven't they been around this neck of the woods before and have failed?

The problem with SNK doing this is they have niche games. There is a small demographic that is into their fighting games. While the fans will love this most of everyone else will ignore it because of the price tag.

I may pick this up, I like the games in the pack.

At first I thought $200 was a little much, but considering the console comes with a docking station and a normal arcade joystick, $200 seems perfect. You have essentially both a portable and home console pre-loaded with 20 games. I'm not sure if I will purchase one, but if more games, especially new games, are announced I will heavily consider it. At the very least the handheld is nicely designed.

Yeah, I forsee this crashing and burning big time and being relegated to the bargain bins in Wal Mart within a few weeks, assuming they get anyone to actually carry this nonsense, which so far it sounds like they aren't from other sites reporting on this. Considering a lot of those titles are already on PSN or XBLA, the ~only~ reason I can see people buy this is for the hardware itself....and I don't really think there's going to be a lot doing that.

@TheArcade Good memories. We're not sure yet 'bout the specs at this Neo Geo X, but my guess it's like a PSP without 3D capabilities.

Since it's related to the original NEO GEO, I don't think it'll be able to play game after 2004(the year NEO GEO AES was discontinued).

On the other hand, IF this portable is capable of rendering 3D(which I doubt), I'd love to finally play Samurai Shodown 64 and Road's Edge at home.

ollie_sr

@TheArcade How are they trying to compete with the xbox, ps3, and wii u? They are NOTHING alike. They have totally different games, the Neo Geo is a reissue, and this is a portable device..

Dark_Arcitekt

@FidelSarcastro Agreed!Already playing all these on Mame through PC/HDMI/TV.I would love to support the system but with all the way old titles, and at the asking price.I won't do it.

The only thing I see worth anything is the well made old school NG joystick.

Really wish they would release new NeoGeo games but at this point this seems unlikely.

You gotta admit, SNK is brave for releasing this. You wouldn't catch Capcom taking such a big risk. SNK is some what admirable.

@Dark_Arcitekt I can see this unit being around $75 instead of $200.  Not sure I'd be an early adopter but sure as heck a late one.

KumaTenshi29

@TheArcade They're brave for releasing something that is likely going to cost them money? -.- How does that make them admirable exactly? They're doing exactly what they did 10 ish years ago, releasing over priced hardware that only a small niche of people will actually want to get, and will be unanimously ignored by most of the world, because it's over priced. Like I said, you can get most of those on PSN for example, transfer them to your PSP. Voila, SNK games on a portable. This is essentially a physical emulator console, meaning it is VERY limited in what it can play.

Here's the kicker: Vita will continue to get more new games, like Dead Or Alive 5, and Tekken Tag 2. Pretty sure this will not.

Yes it would be great to see a new KOF game on this handheld.

Easy, they're willing to take risks that is ballsy which is what other 3rd parties are afraid to do. Even if they're aware it might not succeed at least they try which is more than I can say for other devs.

I do agree the price is overkill and I agree on emulation. These games can be obtained unofficially through Xbox1 too. But it's nice to see SNK re-enter the hardware race again I don't care if it's short lived I am just happy for them.
