Neill Blomkamp rumored to direct Halo TV series pilot

Unconfirmed report claims the Elysium director will take on the pilot of the Spielberg produced live-action Halo series.

Neill Blomkamp, director of District 9 and Elysium, might direct the pilot for the upcoming Halo TV show being produced by Xbox Entertainment Studios and Steven Spielberg.

Latino-Review reports that it has heard the news from "trusted sources."

Though he's had a difficult history with the brand, In April 2013 Blomkamp did indicate that he's still interested in Halo. "I still really love the world and the universe and the mythology of Halo. If I was given control, I would really like to do that film," Blomkamp said.

"But that's the problem. When something pre-exists, there's this idea of my own interpretation versus 150 other people involved with the film's interpretation of the same intellectual property," he added. "Then the entire filmgoing audience has their interpretation. You can really live up to or fail in their eyes. That part isn't appealing to me, but the original pieces are appealing."

Blomkamp and Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson were in pre-production on a Halo movie that famously fell through in 2006. The two instead went on to make the Oscar-nominated sci-fi action movie District 9 and then Elysium, which, coincidentally, had a few things in common with the Halo fiction.

Microsoft first announced the Halo TV series in May 2013, saying series developer 343 Industries will oversee development on the show with Steven Spielberg.

i loved both district 9 & elysium plus blomkamp did some live action short films for halo 3 so he would be perfect for the pilot episode

So a capable director (Blomkamp) creates the pilot and then a hack like Scott Gimple will direct the rest huh? Sounds like Agents of Shield all over again where Joss Whedon only directed the pilot as well.

District 9 was awesome; up there with other sci fi classics like Bladerunner, the first 2 Aliens, the first Predator and Terminator. Came out of left field, totally unexpected andwowed the masses

Elysium (IMHO) was, welll, it was OK but Neill obviously had 100x the budget with big name actors and it came out sorta above average, still fun to watch

A suggestion - give Neill a limited budget with no name actors, zero interference from Hollywood types and we should have a hit TV series!

I Would rather see a movie, either CGI or Real. A TV series will be weak and cheesy.

Cool! Blomkamp knows his stuff in science fiction so hopefully he'll be able to make the Halo TV series work out well!

Damn it. That means it will actually be good if Niel does it. He has been wanting to do a Halo Movie for awhile. That is why he did Distric 9. Basically throw it in the face of the publishers that did not want to do a Halo movie in the past.

Well I did enjoy Halo Forward unto Down which was as close to a Halo movie as you can get. Also Elysium it's self look like the Halo Ring only with a star shape in the middle and if they got Neill Blomkamp, then they should have no problem with this Halo T.V series.

Can't wait for this show, Halo is one of the best series of history.

Halo and Spielberg = another epic win for Microsoft and us.

Which means this will be a case were the rest of the series doesn't live up to the pilot, and you're faced with a ton of mediocrity due to it's initial hook in hopes that it will be half as good.

@psx_warrior@Banefire76Some people expected Agents of SHIELD to be about iron man showing up every week to battle aliens, instead of being about...well....agents of SHIELD.

Ignore them. Its a standard set of hate. The show has been only improving, the ratings while not nearly as good as the pilot(due to most of the above group of people tuning out), still win the night, with the show being the best ABC has been doing in that timeslot in at least a decade.
