Need for Speed: The Run cannonballs to stores Nov. 15

Black Box at work on cross-country race installment in popular driving series using DICE's Frostbite 2 engine; Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii, 3DS versions planned.

Although Need for Speed was once regarded as an annual series, Electronic Arts apparently needs a more frequent fix of the racing franchise. The publisher today announced Need for Speed: The Run, set for a November 15 launch on the Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii, and 3DS. The most recent Need for Speed game, Shift 2: Unleashed, launched last month on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

2011 will see another double dose of Need for Speed.

Developed by EA Black Box, The Run will include a story mode set during a cross-country road race from San Francisco to New York. The game will be built using DICE's Frostbite 2 engine (the same technology at the heart of Battlefield 3) and will feature the return of the Autolog online functionality letting players compare their progress and performance with friends.

Although Slightly Mad and Criterion respectively handled the two most recent Need for Speed titles, the Vancouver-based Black Box has plenty of experience with the franchise. The studio has worked on the series on and off since 2002, producing titles like Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, Need for Speed ProStreet, and Need for Speed: Carbon.

This isn't the first time two major Need for Speed games have arrived in the same calendar year. Last year saw the launch of the free-to-play PC game Need for Speed World as well as Criterion Games' Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. In 2009, EA also released the original Need for Speed: Shift and Need for Speed: Nitro, although there was no overlap in the two games' platforms.

blackbox studio has worked on the series on and off since 2002, producing titles like Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, Need for Speed ProStreet, and Need for Speed: Carbon. THEY SHOULD OF STOP @ HP2 but as we all know craptastic NFS came after words. why cant blackbox make HP3?? why did criterion SCREW up hotpursuit??? making it 1 player game (that sucked) NFS is and always should be 2 PLAYER!!! game offline. bonus is online playing!!!

Fingers crossed...lets hope this one's actually good! Get a feeling of deja vu everytime I say that about an NFS title

I'd also like to have Forza's online selling option available.Where you can customize a car, then sell it for in game cash. That'd be sweet.

NFS isn't what it once was.they constantly try all these new things when it was perfect just the way it was. I liked Most Wanted and Carbon for different reasons, and I'd like to see a return to that formula.Running from cops, taking on rival race groups.,earning money trying to supe up your cars. And the visual customization was so in depth and easy to do on Carbon.I absolutely hated the customization in Shift, with the stupid imprecise methods of moving the graphics and all. A combination of Most Wanted,Carbon, and today's technology in terms of car tuning and crash graphics would be the dream NFS for me.

@TheDarkSpot You're kidding, right? Hot Pursuit 2010 was the first decent NFS since 2.

if i can customize my car just to make it stand out and brag online like on nfs undercover (rims or color even stats not anything similar to midnight club) that makes me want to play the game even more

I really hope this goes back to being need for speed and not Need for Burnout like Hot Pursuit was. While as a game it was good, as a NFS Game it was balls. So I really hope Criterion stick to making Burnout games and leave NFS to Black Box

Isn't one annual franchise release enough? EA, like Activision and WoW, has turned NFS into a whore of a game franchise that wants to milk $100 instead of $50 annually from racing gamers.

Mixed reactions here. Frostbite 2 = amazing. Black box = average at best. Let's hope they prove me wrong.

I will need visual and physical confirmation before I shell out any money for this.... Bring Criterion Back to the NFS Series and I will be sold once again....

The Run when using the Frostbite 2 engine ought to do justice to the Need for Speed franchise. I want this to as engaging as Most Wanted was in its time.

No Criterion: No money from me! they did an AMAZING job with Hot Pursuit... but Black Box??? ProStreet and Carbon are speedy crap games.

Undercover has the best old school muscle car collection to date. That's what saved it. At least for me.

I hope Criterion doesn't touch another NFS game.

@brok Criterion kinda screwed up. They need to stick with their own ****. Burnout.

Thank god they're going back to Undercover/Most Wanted style. 'Nuff said.

Black Box? Aren't they the same branch that made that horrible NFS Undercover and Prostreet which was two of the worst NFS games ever. EA should only allow Criterion and Slightly Mad to develop NFS titles which they've shown to be highly competent. The only good news is that it's using DICE's Frostbite 2 engine which is dx11 capable.

oh no, ea is giving out crappy money makin games with dice's new great tech, i think at least they could have waited for bf3 to be released greedy bastards

@Giga_Surfer. Dude what you said for cryengine 3 is my exact opinion too. You look on youtube at cryengine 2 with full blown power, and it looks amazing, AMAZING. But when you look at Cryengine 3 its the excact same or even worse. But i guess well have to wait till Crytek releases that engine thing on pc, to see what crysis engine 3 is really capable of. For all we know, once the community gets grphics mods for ccryengine 3 it might be evn better. But in my opinion they should bring crysis back to the jungle. Maybe africa cause the you could get jungle, along with savannah. And they could definitely include many farcry easter eggs too

@meke186 Frostbite is one hell of an engine, its Toe to Toe with Unreal Engine and CryEngine 2 (CryEngine 3 is just a bad joke in my point of view), but the fact that the NFS game is gona be released 1st only means that EA might want to show off its precious engine to give a taste of whats to come in BF3, but doesn't really matter, what matter in my point of view is i hardly believe Black Box will be able to use this engine to its full potential, as i said before i lost my hope in Black Box and EA along time ago.

meke186
meke186

@Giga_Surfer Ya for sure but i hope they do do dx11, but im just saying i hope bf3 comes out first so we can see frostbite 2s full effect, instead of a racing game which frostbite was just announced for. but for now im sticking with dirt 3

Normally, I have a neutral stance on racing games, but that statement alone sparked interest in me getting it. This game better not dissappoint.

Ah a cannonball run mode, this has been needed from the very beginning. I remember a game a long time ago call Bump N Jump for the Intellivision, which was a really cool road race game. It's was just like the cannonball run, one long race, and the scenery even changed amazing game for it's time...

this could be a great game, imagine: the graphics of battlefield 3 the tension of nfs carbon canyon race and the controls and reaction of nfs hot pursuit

BlackBaldwin

the cannon-ball race idea is a great idea that if its done right would be a blast to experence. But since this is a franchise that is milked all the time by ea I don't think its gonna turn out in the end like I would like it too.

dice frostbite engine.. not bad, but still not impressed with the new NFS games so far... hope this isn't some cheezy last minute add on...

FallenOneX
FallenOneX

I've been waiting for a version of Cannonball Run in video game for, but I always envisioned it as an add on or separate mode. I'll definitely try the demo, but still scratching head as to why this type of racer is a stand alone release, considering the release of Shift 2.

Terdog
Terdog

@MariusGta I'll see it when i believe it. Hot Pursuit's lack of DLC for PC makes me think that Shift 2 will be the same. I'm not holding out total hope, but experience tells me otherwise
