Need for Speed: ProStreet -- Xbox Live Demo Hands-On

Two events, unlimited speed. We check out the XBL demo for EA's upcoming racer.

by

With the upcoming release of EA Canada's Need for Speed: ProStreet, is it any wonder that an Xbox Live demo of the game could be that far away? If you guessed "no," then award yourself 10 meaningless points, because you are correct! We took an early build of the two-event demo out for a spin recently to see how the folks at EA will be enticing racing fans to pick up ProStreet when the demo hits XBL later this month.

In speed challenge events, things can go wrong…quickly…with the slightest miscalculation.

In true demo fashion, the downloadable ProStreet is merely a taste of what to expect from this revamped racing game. The demo features two events, a speed challenge on the Nevada Highway and a grip challenge on the A-43 interloop. Other race event types that will be part of the full game--such as drag racing and drift competitions--aren't found in the demo.

The grip race is the most straightforward of the events in the game, a two-lap dash against seven other opponents on a course that we've played several times before. The car available for the race is a Nissan GT-R Proto, a quick little number that handles the relatively simple turns of the speedy course well. Even at the toughest difficulty level (and there are three you can choose from for both events in the demo: casual, racer, and king), this race isn't much of a challenge. Instead it seems like a nice introduction to the more realistic car physics that ProStreet will be exhibiting. Unlike in the freewheeling speed challenge event (more on that in a bit), the cars feel tight and responsive in grip events. For racing newbs, ProStreet even uses a Forza-like color-coded racing line assist that shows you the ideal line around a corner, as well as when to use the gas and brakes.

While speed challenge races can take place on circuit tracks (like the Autobahn-inspired course featured in our last look at the game), the event in the ProStreet demo is a point-to-point track from the Nevada desert. Unlike grip races, however, speed challenge events feature long straights and more gentle curves. Don't mistake the tracks for easy, however; the tracks can be extremely narrow, with dangerous obstacles lining the road just waiting to give you a firsthand look at ProStreet's extensive damage modeling. As a speed challenge event, crossing the finish line first isn't necessarily your first goal; instead, you win the event by making sure your car has the highest top speed going through the various checkpoints on the course. The highest total speed at the end of the road is declared the winner. For the speed challenge, we drove the BMW M3 E92; at the start of the race, you get a firsthand look at the gorgeous smoke model as you spin the tires waiting to take off from the line.

While the M3 and the Nissan GT-R Proto are the only cars available in the demo to start with, EA will be unveiling the new 2009 Nissan GT-R in the demo. The car will be available (and will automatically replace the GT-R Proto) when you log on to Xbox Live via the demo on October 23, coinciding with the GT-R's unveiling at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. Look forward to the new GT-R and the ProStreet demo later this month, ahead of the game's release on November 13.

carbon was a very bland game full of boring characters who had to threaten you every minute about messing n their "turf", some raes were boring, nothing new. Pro street can be something new, though.hopefully, for all us nfs fans out there, pro sreet will get us back to the series

Forza was OK /PGR 4 simply AWESOME / but this is going to be the "ISH" oH and if you use the "CORVETTE"in carbon the game is super easy , I blasted through it at least 7 times...... I need a new neeed 4 sppeeed. and This lookz HOT

people comparing this to Forza 2 . PLEASE!!! forza 2 is king of racing games period... but my next best series is the need for speed series (from underground - underground 2 - most wanted - carbon - and now this new one).... but MOST WANTED was easily the best of that series if you ask me cause running from the cops helped it's overall feel alot and in carbon it sorta took away from that feel most wanted had.... and even though ill probably like this new NFS game im sure it aint going to be as good as MOST WANTED was although it might beat carbon ;) plus the end section on carbon was WAY to hard and i never ended up beating that game. i only made it to the first boss 4th race but since if you dont fully beat the boss you got to race all 3-4 of those races all over again if you power the system down :( .. that also sorta ruined carbon for me. but you cant compared a game like Forza 2 to any of the need for speed's since there different racing games. forza 2 = sim, nfs in general = arcade. im sure ill like this new NFS game but im sure in the long run ill pick forza2 (with ALL ASSISTS OFF, with assists on it sucks/aint as challenging/fun) without question.

There's no doubt it'll be much much easier to spin out a human racer (online) than an AI one. AI is always sorta cheap sometimes b/c they get all the game physics telemetry automatically and can adjust likewise. When you get other players that don't have all the assists on, it'll be great fun to PIT the other drivers... ....and even if they do have all assists on (they'll be slower), the likelihood of compensation from a spin goes down with a human... ....I'm about 99.9% positive that you will have your need for carnal physics with online players satisfied...

babyboy thanks for the advice, but I wanna spin out the other players with me, not myself :) u try to do that and let me know how u faired out on it. There is no Question that the game is great looking, I have a 62 inch HD DLP and its amazing on it. Just wish you had more fun with your opponents than this.

Try to spin your car out in the demo....look down at your speedometer...you see the TC and STM buttons flashing....it's your car's assists that 1) won't let your wheels lose traction, and 2) apply independent braking to each appropriate wheel to limit sliding.... When you turn those off....expect burnout mania, sliding galore, and manic chaos... ...and to Desode... you said you crushed the AI on the hardest difficulty setting...that's kinda strange b/c THERE'S NO AI DIFFICULTY SETTING in the demo... The only thing you can change is your personal diffuculty setting (assist settings)....This does not change how hard the AI drivers are....they are preset at easy... Casual, Racer, and King change the assists.... ...and personally...I loved the demo...on my 42" 1080p LCD tv, the game has the crispest graphics I've seen to date (and I have pgr4 and forza 2) ...the damage is fantastic... I think the handling is a bit off in grip racing....but yet again, it forces you to drive with assists on...and I play forza 2 with the microsoft wheel with no assists on ever... Overall, I'll be on this game the day it comes out....*IF* it lacks anything in-game, it'll make up for online with the unique raceday feature...

After EA managed to screw all the fans that love Nascar in their 08 release I was hoping to find a new game to sink my racing needs into. So I downloaded the Demo, and guess what, its just like carbon but in day light. Now I know all of us don't agree on that of course but answer me ONE QUESTION... WHY can't we spin cars out????? WHYYYYYY. Isn't that what makes the game like 10 times more fun online??? with real humans??

i really am not a fan of the underground series - my fave are the old ones like hot pursuit and the one before porsche unleashed....carbon handling was retarded and most wanted prob best imo of the more recents. I just dl'd the demo and the 3rd person camera views are abismal at best...and graphics could be alil better from what ive seen out of the nfs series

NFS Hot Pursuit II was the best and last Good Need For Speed Game in the series. Then people got the Fast and Furious Fever. R.I.P. Need For Speed

Desode
Desode

The demo was ok but thats it. To start off the ai's were lame I crushed them on the hardest setting. I wish they would go back to the underground handling we all love. If you want a sim get forza 2. This is the first nfs I wont buy. That makes this a sad day for me because the best arcade racer of all times is now gone.

well im still waiting for the dam demo... i liked all NFS games but most wanted, and hot pursuit2 was good too. this game wont have a story mode like the other games, meaning no stor duh, u will still have rivals and all that juss that you wont have people talking crap about between races, like most nfs stories. lol but this is something new for nfs, it's never bad to try suttin new. let's see wats up. i kno im getting this bad boy fro sure. gotta amdit it looks pretty. and yes i have a feeling it's gonna give forza a run. and i own forza 2. so ill do some compairing.

This game I think is going to give Forza and GT4-5 a run for their money. The online play ideas are ingenious, and the car customization seems very in depth (did you see the aerodynamics tester? a freaking wind tunnel to test your aerodynamics, how cool is that?!?!) The damage model, while cool, needs more work I think, but I guess it's acceptable considering all the rest of their games didn't have or barely had any damage. This is going to be the best game of the NFS series to date, I think it's a perfect mix of arcade and sim, and will suit the hardcore gamer well. I'm so happy that games are finally becoming next-gen, and not just current-gen with shiny graphics! (Except for COD4 which has shiny graphics, awesome game play, and next-gen experience :-P)

This game looks so sweet , I cant wait. Yeah the NFS UG, and the old cop chasing games were way fun, but I'm glad they are trying something new because having the same basic racing game 3 and 4 times isn't that exciting. I give you props, EA, for trying something new, I hope its really good.

i'm waiting for the nfsps pc demo.i don't care if it looks like pgr4,or others,it's still a part of need for speed franchise.i think i will have more fun playing pro street demo than full version of carbon

NFS underground 2 was the last kick ass boys racer game & NFS most wanted was the last cops and rober game of NFS series. All other NFS series are not worth mentioning... I reckon this game is stil the same as other NFS series but with an improved visual or graphics. I VOTE FOR NFS UNDERGROUND 3 please =D

Need for speed has been its own series of racing. from the look of the demo, it still keeps up with the speed but now is becoming a little to real. im still going to try the demo. if it ends up being like Test Drive, PGR4, or anything like that, then im not sure that im going to want to continue with the series

@underandrius
Why they don"t do NFS like TEST DRIVE UNLIMITED online??? ...it would be nice
Test Drive Unlimited was a "good" game in its own right, but it will never be anything like its predecessors. I'm actually disappointed at how that game was nothing more than a ripoff. NFS has been going downhill aswell, but this might be the game that brings back the fun and enjoyment I had when playing the older games in the series.

OtakuRay You're right, good times from HS and HP Being a cop, racing with exotic cars the High Stakes mode and much more. But will still EA making more NFS games after this one ? I hope that they forget a little the Illigal street racing and do something like the olds NFS titles. All NFS games are exellents (with exeption of the first V-Rally title). Lets wait the game's release on November 13.

I'm sure this will be an ok game but the NFS series kinda got boring after underground 2, i always thought that the sequels were more like expansion packs than new and unique games.

I really think that this is going to be the best NFS game in all the series. NFS Carbon was an awsome game. My score 10.0.

This game is going to be the best NFS game. I think they should create a High Stakes 2 or Hot Pursuit 3. Carbon was good but coul be better: My CARBON Score: 8.2. Let's wait until 11/13

I dunno, I would buy it if it had: name brand body kits (Really...they have aftermarket decals, why not actual parts?), in car view, and...freeroam

I think they should combine underground, most wanted and hot pursuit into this game, also don't forget this game. I really liked the be the cop mode in Hot Pursuit. But be the cop mode was more like 1 cop against six racers, I think you should be able to call back up and be like the cops in most wanted!

wrekingkrew I couldn't agree with you more, allowing for us to chill in meet up with our crews in a huge city an battle it out. Even being able to get out of our cars an check out everyones cars. An do things like line it up on the street or drag at the strip, drift in the mountain pass or on the course. I guess when I finish game school for game design I'll have to do it myself.

NFS needs to move to the next level.. Combine Most Wanted with Underground (with a day night cycle) where the races and the type of races change depending on the time of day. Keep it free roaming in a HUGE city or maybe 2 or 3 cities (San Andreas style) throw in a bunch more cops. You got best of everything.

ROAD & TRACK: Need For Speed and Hot Pursuit 2 with a little Underground on the side, are indeed the best NFS series!

Cool! I just love my NFS, nothing like completely flat-out arcade style racing. I just hope it's not too serious like F2, looked great but... booooring, I do enough driving each day for work, I want to race my A** off at 300MPH!, **** YEH!!!

You guys need to stop bashing on NFS. The NFS franchise has been good in its own way. Of course its not going to beat Forza or Gran Turismo, both of which I have (Forza 1+ 2 & GT 2 + 3 + 4). Yes, in ProStreet they are aiming for a more realistic feel but its not a simulation... Its NFS. The main thing that separates NFS from racing simulators: A story Mode. And that's why I love playing NFS. Its not just about racing over, and over, and over. I love cars, and I love playing my sims but you can only play Forza for so long before you realize that its just circuit racing on repeat. At least GT gives you the chance to rally, or even race in the rain but I still wouldn't put Forza out of the race. But NFS gives you other options: A story, drag, drift, good (mainly visual) customizations, and all with that hip street culture alot of us love. None the less NFSPS will be awesome in my book. Most Wanted was a great game but Carbon fell short (especially b/c of the short story & lack of police interplay) but I believe they will do a great job on their new installment. With that said, you can't compare racing sims to NFS. They are two different categories. Stop complaining about it and get over yourselves. Don't like it, don't buy it. Simple.

I'm looking forward to this game, finally a more serious NFS game, can't wait to check out the demo.......
