Need for Speed: Millionaire concept revealed

"After a lottery, win you bought all the Supercars for you and your friends," says Criterion head Alex Ward.

Criterion Games worked on a concept called "Need for Speed: Millionaire," studio director Alex Ward said today on Twitter.

"Before [Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit], we toyed with a concept called NFS Millionaire. After a lottery win, you bought all the Supercars for you and your friends," Ward said.

"It was supposed to be Freeburn meets Top Gear challenges," he added. "We struggled with it for a bit before binning it off and make Hot Pursuit instead."

Ward said Criterion worked on this concept for around six months and had a version of the game that was playable before it was ultimately tossed out.

"Don't worry, we never threw away anything good," Ward said. "It was mostly poor. I happily take the blame. Making the same game again never interests me."

Also on Twitter today, Ward revealed other game concepts. He said before Criterion made Burnout Paradise, the developer toyed with the idea of a Burnout game set along Route 66.

"We got as far as renting cars to do it for real," Ward said.

Lastly, Ward said he worked on a semi-open-world Medal of Honor game that would have allowed gamers to play as the Germans.

"I once spent a month or so writing up a Medal of Honor game where you played as the Germans. For the first half. Invading England," he said. "I was a HUGE MoH fan back in the day. Would have loved a crack at it. Would have gone open world a bit too. And been very British at core."

In April, Ward revealed that Criterion Games would be moving away from racing games, saying "after over a decade of making racing games, it's time to make something new."

Wait so they are not making racing games anymore. Then we are never going to get another burnout with crash mode. Just another need for speed: not as good as underground 2. Seriously they are making remakes of all of the ones expect the ones I want. And is the one coming this year even needed. I find it hard to believe these games being yearly is a workable business model. I don't remember this series being on the top of the npd numbers for the last few years. Maybe hot pursuit but not any of the other ones released in this hd era.

Thank God it wasn't made. Criterion needs to leave Need for Speed alone.

NFS Hot Pursuit was the last best game in the NFS series after Shift

i just want Black 2 or spiritual successor for that awesome game, i don't really care with Criterion's NFS again. They have their chances and they simply don't fit for the NFS series

Sorry to say, but I'm actually intrigued by the Millionaire concept. Imagine buying 20 friends a new sports car, and 4 of them turn into dicks once they get the keys....

Rethink this idea and make it a PSN/LIVE/eShop title, and I'll think about it.

EDIT: Nevermind, just thought about it........ They'd make this DLC for a future game with 20 exclusive cars.

Wow...the MOH game is exactly what I have been looking for. Playing as the guys with the accent for a change.

That Route 66 game sounds a lot like The Run, actually.

"Making the same game again never interests me."

That's funny because I could have sworn every single NFS game is pretty much the same as the last.

That sounds like a worse premise than the time in grade 4 when my friend (successfully) proposed that the class essay be on a field-trip to KFC.

Hey Criterion, Stop with the NFS crap and give us a new Burnout.

What the hell is this story about? I thought it was another NFS game in development. EA are just spinning their wheels in the mud, 2006 Most Wanted was the best entry in ages, followed by Underground 2 on Xbox, since these games it's been all garbage. Last abomination to call itself Most Wanted and just destroyed the name wholly. No idea what they are doing with NFS but they are steadily losing fans, one day EA will put NFS to good use again. Anyone remember the Shift series and that divergence over to semi realistic racing...what a waste of time that was. Looked pretty played like an epileptic threading a needle. Come on give us a real Original Most Wanted and Underground 2 mash up, complete with the tuning options from UG and the awesome chases with police though canyons and across highways. I will watch from the sidelines until I see something of worth coming out bearing the NFS logo on it.

Use this as a warning: "Don't eat Grandma!" or "Don't eat, Grandma!"

@sensei_hEnRY shame that Black has been completely overshadowed by other FPS games. It desperately needs a PC port

snaketus

@sensei_hEnRY Indeed. Burnout games were fine, but take away manual transmission and car customization from modern NFS game and it's turd.

CapnXtraObvious

@FallenOneX 10 dicks sounds better in my opinion. "You won the lottery. Bought 20 of your friends a new sports car. 10 of them turned into dicks." *epic chase scenes* "10 dicks got loose. It's up to you to clean up the mess."

KBABZ

@blueknight1st And yet people complain about the lack of customization like in the Underground series.
