NCsoft earnings up 9 percent

Quarterly revenue at South Korean MMOG maker rises to $91.2 million, thanks to the enduring popularity of Lineage and Lineage II.

In 1998, NCsoft released Lineage in South Korea, with a US release three years later. In 2003, Lineage II: The Chaotic Chronicle arrived in the Asian nation, about eight months ahead of its North American debut.

The series wasn't exactly a smash hit on this side of the pond, with Lineage II having sold just over 141,000 copies in the US as of March 2007, according to NPD Funworld. However, back in South Korea, the massively multiplayer online game and its predecessor remain wildly popular.

How popular, exactly? According to figures released today by NCsoft, Lineage II generated some 32.8 billion won ($35.3 million) in sales during the first quarter of 2007, followed by the original Lineage's 30.4 billion won ($32.8 million) haul. The two games helped the publisher generate a total of 50 billion won ($53.8 million) in South Korea, 12.9 billion won ($13.9 million) in North America, 7.8 billion won (8.4 million) in Europe and 8.1 billion won (US$8.7 million) in Japan.

Worldwide, NCsoft took in just 6 billion won ($6.5 million) from City of Heroes (2004) and its City of Villains (2005) expansion pack during Q1 2007. That amount was roughly half the 11.5 billion won ($12.4 million) generated by Guild Wars (2005) and its two sequels, Factions and Nightfall (both 2006).

Lineage and Lineage II accounted for 79 percent of the Seoul, South Korean publisher's 84.7 billion won ($91.2 million) of revenue during the quarter, which was 9 percent higher during that same period in 2006. For the quarter, NCsoft saw net income--that is, profit--of 14.1 billion won ($15.2 million).

I've been thinking of leaving WoW to get back into CoH/V for a while.

The CoV/CoH games and GW are amazing! I really wish something like CoV could be played for free. I've been craving that game for months but I just don't have the cash for it :( And I've been bored with GW for a good 6+ months but I still play from time to time because there's no return barrier - genius.

GW is the best! Can't wait for Eye of the North and GW2!

The profit doesn't seem that high compared to what Blizzard makes but hopefully that should be enough to keep Guild Wars alive for a very long time as well as enough distribution money for Guild Wars 2.

CoH/CoV Ftw! I live I'n Paragon, I am the Sexy Empath known as Flush (Defiant) ;). Friendly community a one of a kind MMO with the best Avatar creation PERIOD !!! Soo ADICTIVE :-p And now with the added I9 giving the ability to craft, enhancements/cloting/base salvage & An auction system will add alot more depth to the game & who can forget the re-vamped Hamidion (Main GM) also available to villians Kwwp em coming Nc. GW Rock's Free Online game no complaints there & two standalone expansions & another expansion (not standalone) soon to come. This is an ace game to play in spare time as there are no subs to keep up with (if you like to play other MMO's and dont have the £££) or you can dedicate you time to it & run your own Guild & dip into the PvP side of the game. I'm awaiting the next expansion aimed @ high level content new armour/weapons & indepth story aimed towards the Charr, get to learn more about the deadly race. Lineage and Lineage II, never played either so can't comment it wouldnt be fair XD. NcSoft Ftw! CoX4EvR->

In my game dev class dev are making more games for the Korean online market, it's nuts! I really enjoy Guild Wars as a superb game and the fact that they ask for no monthly fee is icing on the cake.

Last I heard, they are busy making Lineage III. I guess they recovered from the utter shock of Auto Assault. That they can scrape that much revenue in Korea whilst WOW's popularity of 80 plus million subscribers worldwide means that there are still room for other profitable MMORPGs.

Actually the COH/COV have a lot more content than they used to have. They just released an invention system over the weekend & I've already signed up to play it for awhile as a villain. I'm having a lot of fun. The new invention system has rekindled my desire to play this game..

If CoX had more end game content, I would be playing it. But they do have the BEST customer service I have ever experienced! I'm still watching Tabula Rasa too, NCsoft might get me back through that game.

Joined Lineage 2 on the US Beta and still playing it... you get the expansions for free (just got one in April) so you feel you get more for your monthly fee but it is a grinder. The one place it tops WOW is in Art Direction, the game just floors you on how the world looks... They did a great job on design.

I have Lineage II and though its graphics is indeed impressive, the dull quests, extreme exp & item loss when you die, the "all grind" atmosphere and pompous PVP bastards really made me hate the game after a few months. I seriously hope that NCSoft's next rendition of Lineage will definitely take their flaws in Lineage II to mind. ==> Gamers don't just want amazing graphics, they want games that are FUN!
