NBA Live will return in 2012

EA Sports confirms pro basketball sim hiatus ends this year with announcement of NBA Live 13.

by

It appears as if the NBA Live lockout is over. Today, EA Sports confirmed that production is under way on NBA Live 13 by tweeting a picture of the Cleveland Cavaliers' Kyrie Irving playing the game. Additional details on NBA Live 13 were not revealed.

Kyrie Irving is either posing for a picture or NBA Live 13 will have insanely realistic graphics.

EA Sports' professional basketball sim franchise has been dormant since NBA Live 10 was launched in 2009. Following that game's release, EA announced in 2010 that it planned to reboot the franchise with NBA Elite 11. Built around a more "hands-on control" scheme than its NBA Live predecessors, NBA Elite 11 was to emphasize player movement and skill-based shooting.

However, when that game's October 2010 launch window came and went, EA Sports confirmed that it scuttled the game and handed the franchise off to its EA Tiburon studio, better known as the home of Madden NFL. In 2011, the only basketball game EA ended up releasing was the arcade-style NBA Jam: On Fire Edition.

EA's absence from the pro NBA sim genre has proven to be a boon for competitor 2K Sports. Both NBA 2K11 and NBA 2K12 had franchise-best years, topping the 4 million unit sales mark.

Maybe it won't.  Just got cancelled.  EA needs to give up on its NBA games.

Who out there thinks that the next EA Sports' pro-basketball game will challenge 2K Sports this year? I know I don't. Played the demo (I actually got to play through without freezing a couple of times LOL I'm one of the lucky ones) and there wasn't anything about it that was impressive or that stood out from NBA Live 10, save the controls, which didn't seem as fluid as NBA 2K (although being a demo I can't hold it too much against them I guess). Having the Madden studio work on it didn't thrill me in 2010, because Madden hasn't done anything impressive or different since the early 2000s, so hopefully they will have a better team working on it that might give it a chance to contend.

Please EA stay with your Madden and don't mess with 2K

@NightDrifter05 Of course I played the demo. I actually liked the analog shooting and just because some people experienced freezing doesn't mean everyone did.

2k has a great basketball game, an average baseball game and a terrible hockey game Ea has a great Hockey game, an average football game and a terrible basketball game

SnakeEyesX80 , I almost wonder if you played the demo. It was absolutely horrible if you could even play it. Most people couldn't get it to work because of players freezing in place.

NBA Elite 11 was a good concept, but poorly executed. The demo wasn't bad, but the graphics looked like Live 06. lol Hopefully they keep some of the ideas from Elite, but build a better game.

OH you couldn't just buy the damn NBA license so you could make crappy NBA games every year like you do with Madden. Stick to baseball and soccer and let 2K make the football and basketball games.

Kyrie Irving is awesome, just wanted to say that. With that out of the way, I just don't see the Live games catching up with the 2K series any time soon. 2K has only improved (barring the online issues) while Live has suffered so much. I just don't see it.

Sorry but Live hasn't been anything compared to 2k in years. Here's hoping they can pull a good one off for some competition.

"NBA Live 13 will have insanely realistic graphics." Marketing head: Ye, that sounds about right.

I say good luck to them, and I'm glad they got rid of the Elite name and went back to 'Live'. I like 2K and all, but there should ALWAYS be competition....ALWAYS. It helps both sides.

@Stonecutters908 Thanks for the sarcastic comment while I was trying to just state my opinion. There's a big difference comparing the FPS market with the Basketball games market. There's a lot more to offer on the table for FPS's, but for Basketball, one series will have the perfect formula. I think 2K has that formula.

@XboxGuy1537 How open minded! I hope nobody makes another military shooter because COD is in "control".... Frankly I am glad to see someone else go after basketball. As aesthetically appealing as NBA 2K games are, I think the control scheme in that game is down right dreadful. I hate it, just horrible and they seemingly get worse every year.

Sorry EA, 2K is in control now with the basketball games. I will not be buying another one of your copy paste games. Oh wait, I never did!

They let 2K grow way too much. These last two years has been great for 2K. It might be to late but who knows.

Time off is usually the best thing for a series rather than whoring it out every year. Madden hasn't been the least bit fresh or entertaining since the late 90's.

I'll believe it when i see it on a store shelf. (To demo, or not to demo)

Competition is perfect for us gamers. I just hope its a good game. NBA 2K games are good but that's only when 3 or 4 patches have been applied.

EA hasn't hidden the fact that a basketball game was coming this year but I'm glad it's going to be called Live...Elite is Call of Duty's and it the horrors of 2010 are a memory best forgotten.

As much as I LOVE the NBA 2K series, I welcome back the NBA LIVE. I really hope they had been working on it for the last 2 years and not just started getting back to it. They should have used that time to really brain storm & put together something special. I always felt that these yearly sports games could use a year off inbetween to really implement new stuff & give the game a better polish than they do. Most games feel like a dlc could do the same thing to what they just put out a year ago anyways. Here's to hoping that LIVE can give us an awesome game. If they don't deliver a game that's on par or better than NBA 2K, they should just shelf the brand. They should be able to give us something other than the usual after 2 years of hiding.

Hopefully all the time off allows them to produce a basketball game with substance and not just eye candy. Looking for some competition with NBA 2K series.

Won't be buying it until at least a month or so after release. Let's see if they used the hiatus to actually make a better ball game instead of mere upgrades to the existing flawed engine
