NBA Live 13 hitting XBLA, PSN for $20?

EA Sports representative supposedly confirms pro basketball sim arriving digitally this October, says it is a "bit risky" to not put game on disc.

If a new report proves accurate, EA Sports' NBA Live 13 will arrive this October through Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network as a $20 download. The report comes from an interview IRBGamer held with an EA Sports representative this week at the GameStop managers' conference in San Antonio, Texas.

NBA Live 13 will be a digital release, it seems.

The EA Sports employee reportedly acknowledged that it is "a bit risky" to not run the game as a boxed product, but that hasn't kept the publisher from pursuing a digital release.

An EA Sports representative told GameSpot, "We don't have a comment on the rumor or speculation. However, the NBA LIVE development team continues to work hard on the game and we will be sharing more details soon."

A digital-only release of NBA Live 13 does not come as a total surprise. EA posted biggest-ever digital revenue of $1.2 billion during its latest financial period, with CEO John Riccitiello saying it will "break away from the pack" in the year ahead with new digital capabilities that he claims competitors cannot match.

EA Sports' NBA Live franchise has been dormant since NBA Live 10. A 2011 version was planned as the first to be released under the NBA Elite brand, but that game, and the Elite name, were scuttled.

All a part of EA's push (or hard-on) for going all-digital.

Yeah $20. Then you pay $10 to unlock the franchise mode, $10 for career mode, $15 to be able to play multiplayer online, $10 for online seasons, $10 for updated rosters throughout the year.....I can see where this is heading. Then after they have milked the supporters of this series they will release it on disc as it was intended with all those 'features' as standard on the disc for your retail price of $60. Oh, but then you will have to purchase downloadable content that allows you to play the game online, updated rosters........ blah

By all accounts it's piss poor... no great loss.

It isn't 'risky' to not put it on disk, just selfish and one-sided, so that doesn't surprise me. I'm just glad it's not getting a more glamorous price.

Hey, remember when 2K sold football for $20 and EA complained about it?

I'm not helping EA (E.vil A.ssociation) by giving 20 bucks for this piece of $hit so they can keep buying the NFL license to stop 2K from making a comeback in football.

not sure how vast the ps3 game library is on the playstation store but they should put the game on xbl's games on demand. that way they can make the game as big as they want without having to worry so much about the size of the game.

Saw gameplay of this over at OperationSports. My Lord it looked horrible. They had no choice but to go this route after its poor showing at E3 and then the fact that there has been a blackout on info about the game. EA's silence about the game was a telling sign that it was going to be bad. This is what was expected after they admitted that they re-used assets from Elite to make Live 13. Using assets from a canceled game to relaunch your brand isn't a good idea. Especially when it took you two years to do it. You don't give the NBA 2K series two seasons of no competition. And with 2K13 looking great, EA new Live wasn't going to sell well. They failed with Elite and they failed with Live 13. It's a shame, cause Live at one point in time was a fantastic series.

$20? Of course, if they were to release a $60 game, it instantly puts them against the 2K series, which they know they will not win. So why not lower the price, and have an actual excuse to release a half assed game? It's a win win for them lol

NBA Live 13 = 1/3 the price of NBA 2k13

NBA Live 13 = 1/3 the quality of NBA 2k13

It should have stayed dead.

EA is becoming the drug dealer of digital games. They'll sell them cheap, like this $20 pricetag, then when everyone is happy with digital downloads being so cheap, they'll start raising the price to $30, then $40 and so on. That's how they'll ease people into it by making it look like a great savings over boxed games. Don't be fooled.

Live stopped being good years ago. The last good live was '03 with Jason Kidd on the cover. Live is like a cartoon game now where you can hit threes from half court every possession. Doubt many people care.

I really liked NBA Live 10. It just needed more game modes and a "Become a legend" mode and it would've been perfect. For $20, I doubt EA will pack much with the game. I'm still upset that they removed Franchise Mode from the new Madden.

CaptainHerlock

I sincerely doubt this is going to be a digital only release, and to release for only $20. These games make too much money, and EA isn't in the business to be "swell guys", like so many gamers want them to be.

I dont really like EA, but this is a good move. They need a share of the basketball sim market & thats the way to get it. Still, 2K got this. I think the long lay off has hurt them to the point where they cant make the comeback. Maybe thats part of the reason y they decided to go digital only. Save the dollars on the boxing, box art, copying of the disc & the distrubution of the game. I know they want to transition towards this model in the future but it makes sense to do it here. If it doesnt work then they will have saved money on all of the above. I hope im proven wrong & that they will make the comeback cuz competition is great for gaming.

It's a good way to get back into the field. Once they establish themselves, they will up the price on future versions along the same line as the 2K series. Just because the game is only $20 doesn't mean that EA is going to skimp out on some features. Everyone knows, including EA, that if they don't nail the game with this years version, then they might as well hang up the NBA franchise and so they are counting on bringing out a game that everyone wants to see and play.

I do believe it is still too early to make digital only releases as not everyone gets online with their consoles and I also think parents are more willing to buy games for their children at stores so they know what they are getting and dont need to use a credit card on some machine they still might think is just a toy

NBA Live was cool back in the XBOX days, but 2K has taken the NBA to new heights.  If they would just fix the passing and make it a bit easier to penetrate the lane (w/o losing the ball), 2K would be nearly perfect.  Live was too easy to dunk on almost every possession.

What I'm concerned about is that if it's on XBLA, then how robust will the game actually be in terms of franschise mode, multiplayer and player creation. If it's not going to be anything like NBA 2K11 or 12, then I'll pass.

Can't even see myself getting this at $20. 2K is looking great this year so I'll pass.

I love how this brings up EA vs. 2K right away.  Sorry but as far as basketball goes they are both worthless.  Live is an all out scoring fest while the canned animations make 2K unplayable. I love 2K showing a full 20 min demo of their game online and there being 8 times players stepped out of bounds for turnovers because the annimations carried them where it wanted and not where the palyers wanted to go.  And that 4 times the ball could not be inbounded because the game didnt respond to button presses. But hey at least Steve Nash looks great.  LOL  And please keep yourselves calm wih the NFL 2K 5 being great. The presentation was top notch, and customization was sweet but gameplay was a joke.  Go play it now and run only in rotes for a full season.  My friend and I did and guess what the lowest rated QB in the game had a 92% completion rate for over 450 yards a game and 96 TD's ..Now that is good gameplay right ?  Lets face it sports are too hard to recreate a true sim game of so EA and 2K please give the reigns to someone new to try . And 2K your baseball game is horrible but keep making the Bigs cuz as an arcade game it was awesome.  At least Sony gets 1 thing right they make the best baseball game year in and year out . As for their older sports sim franchises .... well .... same as above.

If thats true then they are making the best Basketball game ever created and will never make another one. ( I am Kidding).  2k5 didnt take three years off to create a $20 game. They stayed with it until they got it right.  Why would EA buy a NBA license to sell the game at $20.  They are trying to low ball NBA2k13.  Its a dirty tactic that makes no sense.  NBA LIve left because they couldn't make a good product. 2k5 left because they couldn't make a football game anymore.

5 on 5 NBA Jam with updated rosters; acually sounds good.

 @Son_of_Bmore

Yeah, but I don't think it'll be as good as NFL 2K5 was. If they are still using that awful NBA Elite engine, they will be in trouble. If they are only charging $20, you can expect a LOT of micro-transaction for teams, players, uniforms, arena, legends, etc. By the time you pay for everything that should already be in the game, it will probably cost more then a $60 game. This may also end up being an arcade style basketball game like the older NBA Live games on the Genesis & SNES. The games were fun, but completely unrealistic and way, way to easy. Defense was thrown completely out the window.

@Vodoo The other thing that can happen is someone snaps up the exclusive rights to NBA games and jacks the price up to $60, say like what EA did in 2004 with football.

@thereal-15-cent they didn't remove franchise mode its just called connected careers. You play CC offline in coach mode and it is pretty much the same shit as franchise mode. You make all the decisions for your team and play the games every week.

@checkrazor1976  @berzerk0912 and realize that's bullshit because EA also snatched up the NCAA license as well as the Arena football license. EA also tried to buyout the NHL and the NBA licenses. Also, it was reported right here on Gamespot that EA was trying to buy the NFLPA license 6 months before the agreement, which was a whole month before NFL2K5 released.

EA pulled the "The NFL approached us" BS as damage control so naive people like yourself believe them.
