NBA Live 13 canceled six days before planned release

Microsoft rep reveals EA waited until 11th hour to scuttle professional basketball sim; game was to be downloadable instead of available at retail.

by

EA Sports waited until the last minute to cancel NBA Live 13 last week, according to a tweet from Microsoft director of Xbox Live programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb. He said NBA Live was supposed to launch today on Xbox Live Arcade, meaning EA Sports' official cancellation of the project came just six days before its targeted launch.

NBA Live 13's tip-off was killed in the last minute.

Major Nelson's tweet also confirmed the rumor from August that NBA Live 13 was planned as a downloadable title as opposed to a full retail offering. A report out of the GameStop manager's conference in Texas suggested EA was pursuing a $20 digital release for the game, despite being aware of unspecified risks.

NBA Live 13 is not the first professional basketball simulator that EA has canceled in the 11th hour. The company had planned to ship NBA Elite 11 in October 2010, but after delaying the game in September of that year, the publisher officially canned the game in early November 2010.

What a waste and I feel sorry for the people involved in the development. At that late hour they must have thought it was a finished product!

How many years will it take EA to make a basketball game that's at least worthy of letting people purchase?  They've sat out 3 cycles now.  Seems like it's time to either fire the devs or pull an Acti and let them support battlefield or something.  They've shown that they don't have the skillset to make a basketball game.  Why pretend like they do?

Was this an actual sim or action game ?  If this was going to be anything like the NFL Head Coach game then they were smart to cancel this.  What a turd that was.

What an enormous waste of time and money.

Now they need to do something about this NFL exclusitivity agreement. That's a recipe for disaster, as anyone that's played Madden over the past five years knows. Competition is good; it ensures quality and rewards innovation. Look at all the piece of crap GTA clones that came out between 2002-05; all of them garbage. Which game series is still being produced? Although Red Dead Redeption was 100 times better than GTA4, I think you see my point.

The NBA2K series is much better than EA's Live.  EA sports sucks compared to 2K.  Now, if they would just bring out a new 2K Football game.  NFL2K was miles better than Madden!

I knew something was off when the announce NBA Live 13 was going to be digital only.

Putting aside my loathing of EA, I'm a little concerned with 2K being the only player in NBA games. I haven't got NBA2K13 yet, but was a little disappointed with the jumps (or the lack of fixing) from each iteration of the newer NBA2K series. Don't get me wrong, I still love NBA2K13, and play it almost daily.

But having more competitions would probably be better for 2K.

My gripe? Try playing MyPlayer mode... and see how the CPU can still sub-in players with 8 fouls.

@punkdsk8erdude lol i totally agree with what your saying and what pisses me off the most about this is all the people who wasted there time working on the game.  I'm sure anytime a developer says to its staff "well i'm sorry guys but were going to have end development of this game", they all just want to up and walk out.  I feel sorry more for the people working on the games then the developers who have no damn clue what they are doing.

They should have cancelled Madden 13, or at least tried to finish it.

They might as well never even work on another NBA game again. They lost too much ground in the genre. 2K owns the basketball sim now & i dont c EA recapturing even 10% of that auidence back. So EA just hang it up on NBA games. Now if they would just somehow give up the NFL license...

@painpas I know right man? Live would dominate if they didn't let 2K rip off the right stick dribbling. My 2 favorite things about Live over 2K during 03 was the new freestyle dribble controls and the DEDICATED DUNK BUTTON. BOOMSHAKALAKA!

at least they know, not to even bother anymore, madden's next when 2k makes football games again

This is dIsgusting. EA knows no one would buy this crap if they played it.  People fail to realize the original Elite was cancelled because in 2010 they had package the disc with the nba jam code. So we all told EA we will buy the game to get the code for NBA jam and sell the disc back (because the DEMO and game sucked.)  When EA heard this they had to quickly cancel the game to be shipped.  They then decided to sell us NBA Jam on a full disc.  The next year instead of releasing a new Elite/ live game they cancel again saying they will be back next year. They then re release NBA jam again with the EA yearly minimum improvements. (no way of moving rosters?) Another year goes by So now here we are and they cancel again.  Ive never seen a company give up so many times on a video game when people are anticipating it.

They whine about used games being their problem problem for losing money, but then they don't think about their canceled games, which could be the real reason why they are losing money. Oh, the irony.

painpas

They need to forget realism in the game itself and go for the NBA live 2005 type of gameplay. They will not catch up to the 2K series. They were so far ahead in the post game from the Dreamcast days. They have to go back to use one stick to move the other to dribble X or A to Pass and Square or B to shoot. Keep it simple and fun and we'll be back to buying both games again. As for now 2K13 is going into the MLB the Show territory where they are going for a life sim experience which will change sports games forever.

Maybe EA canned NBA Live 13 because they were afraid that David Stern was going to fine them for flopping.

It likely wasn't going to measure up to NBA 2K13 anyway.

EA doesn't release a terrible game filled with bugs and just flat out bad. What do fans do?? Whine about about EA being the devil when they did something right by not cashing in on a failed game.

EA saw how awesome NBA 2K13 was, and bailed out.

You guys should play NBA 2K13..no doubt the best sports game ever..i watched the demo from NBA Live 13 in HD and it's a bad game..i don't get it..it used to be good..   i'm an EA fan because of Fifa especially 13 but the NBA 2K13 is much better in every way possible..

Really not a fan of 2K Sports.  Their games generally lack polish, and have lackluster presentation.  Just look at their baseball series compared to Sony's.

@Dawg9000  @painpas  Exactly. The game was too much fun plus you could almost make combos for certain players using the spin, hop step then dunk. Loved those days.

@slonekb05 I know right the last nfl2k5 beat madden silly EA had to buy the entire nfl gaming license to stop them. Still my most played nfl game ever. EA basketball is even more horrible and 2k killing them in that so bad they may as well quit. EA sucks they just buy out the competition instead of truly improving.

mulder_000
mulder_000

@painpas I agree, it's good to have a sim and arcade option available.  I liked NBA Live because it was a fun arcade Basketball game.

Navigator416
Navigator416

@Evilbunz you have it 100% wrong. They would have released it if not for the fact that there is an alternative NBA game by 2k. EA has made it clear, that their business model is YEARLY releases for EVERY IP. To have nba13 directly compete with 2k13 would be moronic because EA is fully aware that an updated roster is not enough to compete when actual competition exists.

mellow09
mellow09

@Evilbunz One way of looking at it.

The other is this: EA waited until the 11th hour to cancel a terrible game filled with bugs that was just flat out bad.

And a game only gets to that point when A, it's made by people who don't know what they're doing. Or B, the people making it don't care.

apocalyps382
apocalyps382

@Evilbunz Exactly.  Plus it only would have hurt EA's credibility and hurt future sales of games.

But I have to admit, I know absolutely nothing about what game is being talked about, just praising your logic.

 @nurnberg

We are dealing with it but playing NBA 2K13. LOL!! Capcom and EA are greedy, money hungry companies that only care about making their quarterly margins so they can get their huge bonus checks. They could game less about gamers for their developers. As long as the games are released on time and make millions, that's all they care about. Let's see if they release NBA Live 14 for $20 next year. Don't count on it.

Well, at least FIFA has some competition. I haven't played a FIFA game in like 6 years. Or an NHL game for that matter.
