Namco Lets Loose a Dragon

New PlayStation RPG will go head-to-head with Final Fantasy VIII.

Dragon Valor is the new action-adventure RPG from Namco. It is loosely based on the old 8-bit title Dragonbusters. The game will be fully polygonal unlike the recently released Tales of Destiny. There will be puzzle elements as well as arcade-style combat.

The story will be fairly complex, spanning several generations of characters - similar to Phantasy Star III. The character you choose to marry will determine whom you will play as in the next generation - and also the events that will unfold.

A large part of the game will focus on fighting Dragons that each have individual weak spots that the character must identify and exploit. So how will Namco's latest compete against Square's? Says Mike Fischer, director of marketing at Namco, "Every year there is one game that everyone in the industry talks about. I think in 1999, Dragon Valor will be that game."

Dragon Valor is set to be released spring of 1999 in Japan. A US date has not yet been announced.
