Namco Bandai profits soar

Quarterly profits at Japanese firm jump 48 percent to $106 million, with Tales of Xillia leading the charge.

The quarterly profits of Namco Bandai Holdings, parent company of game publisher Namco Bandai, were up 48 percent for the three months to December 31, 2011, to ¥8.3 billion ($106 million), thanks to strong overall sales in Japan that overwhelmed poor international performance.

Tales of Xillia blazed a trail for Namco Bandai this year.

In its financial report for the period, Namco Bandai notes this was driven by a 17 percent increase in the number of games sold by the firm in Japan, despite a 27 percent decline in sales in the US and a 5 percent drop in Europe. The most successful titles for the firm were Tales of Xillia, which had sold 760,000 copies in Japan in the final nine months of last year, and Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme VS, which sold 550,000 in the region in the same period.

The PlayStation 3 was the firm's most valuable platform, accounting for nearly 4 million sales. While the Nintendo DS and 3DS contributed 3.4 million sales between them, the PSP accounted for 2.8 million games sold. PlayStation Vita sales figures were not broken out.

An 18 percent increase in sales for the firm's Toys and Hobbies business also bolstered Namco Bandai's bottom line. Alongside its results, the firm released an outline of its plan for growth over the next several years. As well as focusing on Japan-developed games, it plans to use its strong position in the Japanese toys market to "become 'the premier company' in the character business by spreading our strength globally," with a particular focus on what the firm calls "boy's toys" in the US and Europe.

Namco Bandai expects its full-year sales for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011, to be up 12 percent year-on-year at ¥440 billion ($5.6 billion), with profits of ¥18 billion ($238 million)--a tenfold year-on-year increase .

@TheTrueMagnusX1 Continued... Also i was the only one on my connection.Plus i don't think 20 of my friends on my friend list are gonna have the EXACT same problem with their connection. Since i forum lurked when the game came out i would know.Go look it up yourself.Unless you have the 360 edition, then don't bother. Btw i posted both here and prepare to die.com, so two communities of proof i think is more than enough.I even signed onto a forum petition then sent off to Namco Bandai from preparetodie.com. So ya....

@TheTrueMagnusX1 I got it at launch on my ps3.I owned Demon's Souls beforehand, never had a single problem with it.Got summoned easy, always got to invade easy, not a single prob. Most excellent game i ever owned. Dark Souls i got at launch, i mean hell preordered and paid in full long before i got it and waited outside the door for its release. I complain about it now because its poor multiplayer experience came from Namco Bandai. Go to preparetodie.com(its own site) and look through the old forums. You will find many many many posts and threads about its problem. As for what the MAIN problem with P2P when it came to Dark Souls was thus: You could put a summon down for your friend who is in the required soul level range and he would not see it.People were doing this for hours with no luck. Speaking that i worked extremely hard to get my Warriors of Sunlight Covenant rank to 3( do you have any idea how many Sunlight Medals that requires?) i certainly know abit about summoning. To add to that, all my friends who owned the game were having the same problems as me. You see....with P2P...unless your able to "make a party", you won't RANDOMLY be on the same P2P server at the same time. You may get lucky. Now if you want solid proof, if the old threads are still up, i can bring up...say...about 70 old threads? Maybe even more?

@Lunchfriggenbox I agree with you. Also he keeps saying, "oh you guys got it after it was fixed." But still if it is fixed why is he complaining about it now. Again I have had the game from launch and have had no trouble. Plus having 27MBPS does not mean your impervious to internet problems. There are tons of things that can slow a connection. Perhaps some one is using the internet heavy when he is playing or something of the sort. The fact is that we are not having trouble.

@WolfGrey Nope got it at launch. Never had trouble...

TheTrueMagusX1

@WolfGrey Wheter it is Peer 2 Peer is irrelevant. The fact is your having trouble with it, and many many other gamers are not. So the problem is with your internet, not the games servers P2P or not. Know anything about how the internet works eh?

Could we get that One Piece game over here please.

@TheTrueMagusX1 When Dark Souls came out it was Peer-2-Peer.The forums of this site and their own site were flooded with complaints. Know the game's history eh? @Lunchfriggenbox I waited a while for a patch then gave up on it. I was also part of The Warriors of Sunlight while my other was a Gravelord Servant. Both were crippled quite severely by its online problems. I guess they finally fixed the problems and fixed the online but when it first came out(and for a long time afterward) it was pretty busted online. Waiting a couple hours to be summoned or to summon anyone, Gravelord covenant was just simply broken. Im glad they finally got it fixed, but too little too late. You two must of gotten it recently or after it was fixed. Oh and btw.Direct Connection with high speed cable, 27 mbs.So its not my end.

It'd be nice if they'd release both of those games stateside...

@WolfGrey Funny. It sounds to me that your internet is the problem, not the servers. Because I have had no problem with the servers or anything like that with Demon Souls. Instead of being mad at the wrong person, get better internet. Problem solved.

bigmouthkid

Soooo ummmm does this mean that they'll localize Tales of Xillia? They would have to be really stupid not to do that. The U.S population is alot larger than Japan.

Oh forgot to mention that Namco Bandai are the ones that are in charge of Dark Souls's extremely horrible p2p servers that don't allow you to play with your friends. From Software had no choice in that part. That was all Namco Bandai. They single handily killed that game for so many people, including me. Whats sad is that i got 2 years of playtime out of Demon's Souls compared to my 1 month max of Dark Souls.Does that tell you how bad they screwed up the online? Also when they got asked about it by customers(including me) they replied by telling us that we were doing it wrong. Nice huh? Ya Namco Bandai is abit on my @#$! list.

I'd like to see an Ace Combat that isn't like Assault Horizon - or at least put Ace Combat 6 on the PS3 :D Anyways well done, Namco/Bandai.

The tales of series has been brought over before but they have not done so with the ps3 tales of vespiria -SHOCK why they did bad out side the country -the thing people WANT they didn't give them. As for tales of the Abyss i have it on my ps2.

Never even heard about the Tales game, but its fantastic that it sold so well in Japan. The Japanese developers trying to appeal to Western audiences need to rethink their strategies. Afterall, 90% of the Japanese games Americans played as children and still play today had Japanese audiences in mind, not American.

@ bobafett1701e I don't think Namco Bandai own the rights to Baten Kaitos anymore, the last one was developed by Monolith Soft and published by Nintendo.

With all that extra money you'd think they could put some of it into bringing One Piece (Pirate Warriors) to Europe. Make it so!

As much as I love Namco and the Tales series as a whole, I still feel a bit cheated that they remade Graces for PS3 and that's the only version getting a US release... Not to mention the fact that several Tales games have been remade with extra content for a Sony console. I love you guys but favoritism is unbecoming... /rant

Unfortunately they won't have strong sales from SCV in their next fiscal year it's been doing poorly on almost all regions.

@Rubius02 I hope so too. I also figure since Tales of the Abyss is coming to the 3DS they will also release the other PS2 tales games on the 3DS system as well but, I'm just shooting in the dark on that one.

You know if they actually released a majority of their games outside of Japan their profits would be much higher, they put out a lot of great games that never make it stateside.
