NA tunes into Nintendo Channel

New free service offers info on full-fledged Wii games, DS downloads via the Mario Factory's ubiquitous console.

by

This morning, many gamers woke up to a soft blue blinking glow emanating from their Wiis. The signal heralded the latest update to the console from Nintendo: the eponymous Nintendo Channel. Via a brief note on the console's messaging service, the cash-flush game maker announced that the service, which has been available in Japan since last November, is now available in North America and is expected to launch in Europe at the end of the month.

For those who own only a Wii, the Nintendo Channel adds several new features. It will offer downloadable videos for the console, including game trailers and commercials, along with instructional videos on how to use Wii services and games. Other content will also be available, such as a video interview with often-honored game designer Shigeru Miyamoto.

Wii owners will also be able to look up information and box art for both released and upcoming games on the Nintendo Channel. In addition, those who have downloaded the Wii's Web browser can order the games directly through the console. It also lets users rate Wii games that they've played by filling out various surveys about their playing habits and preferences. The demographic and preferential data from this information will then accompany games on the Nintendo Channel, allowing users to select games that people of comparable age or sex play, or to see other games liked by those who play their favorite games.

However, the service's biggest draw will be for DS users, given that, once downloaded, it will turn the Wii into a DS demo-download station. Via the two devices' Wi-Fi connection, the channel will let players browse demos on their Wii and then transmit them to their DSs much like demo kiosks at retailers.

For a guided video tour of the Nintendo Channel, visit Nintendo's official Web site.

It's pretty nice, but I wish we could review games.

Yea, the Nintendo channel IS pretty cool all right. They have a decent selection of DS demos (demos only, no videos like in retail stores) and the video thing is also pretty cool. This new rating system is also nice, though it's not REALLY a rating system. It just has casual/hardcore pie charts which can show data for a specific age group. I really hope Nintendo will add some sort of star or number rating system like Gamespot does. Then again, they obviously just want too make more money out of this channel, so they might not do that so more people will buy lower rated games. However, you can rate a game on a slider, so Nintendo probably will add that in the future. (Maybe they're just waiting until they get enough data. Who knows! I just hope they do it soon.) And I agree that Wii demos would be nice, too.

Wii demos would be good. Not like that **** metroid prime preview we got, I was expecting like a demo but it was just...a bit rubbish

I plan on getting a Wii in another year or so. But I honestly don't think I'll be using this service. It does look interesting, though.

Great, now i don't have to go to the store to download DS demos. How about bringing out some Wii demos? Unless they want us to buy some more crappy games.

I'm glad it finally got released.. seems it it took absolutely forever since it was released in Japan last Winter. I can't wait to try it, though.

Sounds awesome and I can't wait for this to hit UK, a couple of thing that this once again brings to mind, Wii really needs a HDD I heared that Ninty may be on this and I only hope they are and it doesn't take long and DS needs an adapter for the GBA slot that lets you save stuff like demos maybe to a separate memory card like the one currently used in the Wii, I just hope Nintendo pick up on this and get moving on some storage stuff (hopefully not in a damn new and improved console).

Wow I get to download ads to my wii? If I didn't have a DS this would be as useless as that clock they added a year ago.

The demo's for the DS is definitely the biggest news here for me. My two girls have been playing Nintendogs, Catz, and New Super Mario Bros. for way too long. It's about time they start trying some other games out. My girls can be so indecisive.

I love the intro video for this channel. Catchiest song ever. Also, I had way too much fun with the demo for the Guitar Game, and Cooking Mama.

This is a great new channel. But after having it for a day, it's really just a lot of fancy commercials. Still, this will be the perfect companion to WiiWare when that launches...

Excellent news, can't wait. but am very worried about the space issue - but if you can stick them on a 2gb SD card - all is well :o)

Good, but it also makes the storage space issue even more noticeable. This channel takes yet another over 200 blocks to fully use. 100+ to install, and 100+ for its save file.

and sony believes they have this generation won? based on this ,, i say wii ,, it just keeps getting better, and better every damn week month day or what ever, and let me remind everyone graphics does not sell or make a game fun ! and weve seen this in the handheld section and with sonys ps1 and ps2 ,,, also it does not matter what kind of internet it has or had, point is nintendo improbed upon the bases, where as sonys service is not improved, the only overall improvment i see is the psn store, nothing specail thare nintendo however upgrades and adds new stuff to wii every so often , and the nintendo channel is the best yet now all im waiting for is a music channel and update that lets wii read compact discs, or they release the next one with all of it, dvd bluray etc, and kick the competitiors out of the ball game, every one keeps claiming nintendos behind in technology,, well i dont think so,, nintendios invented almost anything you know of gaming today,3d -n64 4 controller port s-n64-gc-wii motiion sensing controls -nes/wii analog joy sticks-n64, remember ps1 started with standard pad and in japan only disc drives so ya we in america never got em but still nintendo invented those in gaming consoles,, and sony ,followed suit, also being helped by nintendo in the early stages of what we know as the ps1 today and here they are agai n wit teir touich screen d ual screen handhelds ds dslite and wii which contains somthing 360 ps3 or any other console does not have- that is a news channel a fast internet channel ,, a weather channel , and various other unique channels and free wifi ,, i have yet to see a pay for play game ,,, so ya,, but if so ill be glad to pay 50 $ a year or what ever for wii ,, and 360 ,, as for ps3 nothing interist me much as a headset costs 5 0 dollars, , and is wireless,, i like my head sets with wires thanks any how, and another thing that has gotto stop is complaining about graphics, there is nothing wrong with wiis graphical abilities , back in 80s we had 8 bit graphics we werent complain in gthen, so we should not complain now , ,

I feel like Nintendo is stepping up their game by doing having this new channel. I guess they got tired or Microsoft and Sony kicking their rears with new ideas. I like the DS download feature
