Mythical Monster Slaying in Dragon's Dogma

Dragon's Dogma is filled to the brim with mythical beasts begging for a taste of your sword.

Dragon's Dogma lands on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 next month, laden with dynamic combat, deep role-playing elements, and enough mythical beasts to have Hercules trembling in his sandals. The game regularly pits you against a wealth of these legendary creatures in tense and exciting encounters. We had a few run-ins of our own with a number of said fabulous monsters. Take a look below to see how we fared.

Cyclops? More like bye-bye-clops

Chimera minute and let me stab you

Griffin-ish him!

Hydra… no, I got nothing.

Do these clips make you hungry for more mythical monster slaying? Let us know in the comments. Dragon's Dogma is scheduled for release on May 22 in the US and May 25 in the UK and Europe.

Did anyone else find the demo for this really dull? I was really looking forward to the game, but 20 mins into the demo I was bored...

@s_h_a_d_o I'm just saying that everyone has the right to base a setting on any culture when creating a story/game especially when it comes to fiction such as mythology since it was made up anyways. As for the medieval style, unless you lived during that time, you can only base it off common knowledge and/or study up on it which anybody can do.
Anyways, I don't think there is an "issue of 'jurisdiction' involving interpretation of a culture" since movies and video games have been doing it for years.
I hardly think that's justification, and a variety of different media have been guilty of violating cultural heritage in the past - take Disney's distortion of historical fact and subversion of classical literature for example. I'm reminded of a quote by Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) that seems apt as a standpoint on artistic integrity... "Write what you know."

I don't care where the monsters are from. As long as I get the chance to epically kill em ^_^

@s_h_a_d_o Well for the Chimera and the Hydra, I know for sure that they originate from Greek mythology and I usually think of Dragons coming from the Chinese culture. Anyways, I don't think there is an "issue of 'jurisdiction' involving interpretation of a culture" since movies and video games have been doing it for years. Take the western genre for instance. A movie or game would have to make its own, or take someone else's, interpretation of the wild west since practically nobody alive still lives that life style.

@JACOBDRAGON666 Of course not, that would be silly of them. You'll pay for the stuff they've kept aside a couple of weeks down the line.

@UnderQuarantine Oh I don't deny it looks awesome and as I mention, I'm an avid fan of the mythological. I just question whether or not there's an issue of 'jurisdiction' (for want of a better word) when it comes to the interpretation of a culture not one's own. I guess in many ways mythological imagery falls outside that argument because (also as I mention), it has suffused contemporary thought on a global scale, and there might be an argument made for a common racial memory for certain elements (e.g. dragons). I certainly don't see it as a negative thing, provided such treatment is undertaken with integrity, sensitivity and remains true to the source.

Way to barely show off game elements unique to DD. How do people get these jobs? >_< Just give the game to Kevin VanOrd so viewers will see how the game is awesome.

Don't like the look of this game. Is that lion being abused by a goat?

"Cyclops? More like bye-bye-clops" Really. Game looks awesome though but I get the impression that it takes elements from a lot of other similar games and mashes them together.

@Double_Wide I guess they had to cut out most of the fight since the hydra had a ton of health bars.

@s_h_a_d_o What about Jade Empire? That wasn't seen as offensive. I really don't see these as heretical, its mythology! There are plenty of western developers that ruin parts of mythology with bad games. This game looks awesome, so it doesnt' matter where in the world it has come from. Why should we see it as a negative thing?

Having been reared on a diet of Harryhausen, I love being given the opportunity to slay such fabulous beasts [lit.], but I do wonder sometimes about this proclivity shown by many Asian developers for appropriating the idiomatic imagery of , maybe? I know such myths and monsters have entered the lexicon of a contemporary literature that spans international cultures, but would not a western interpretation of Shintoism (or similar) be viewed as culturally insensitive?

So Dragon's Dogma takes a page out of God of War's book and lets you slaughter your way across the full menagerie of mythical creatures. :p Torture that the release date is four Fridays away though. :(
