Murdered: Soul Suspect set in Salem, Mass.?

Square Enix teases upcoming console and PC game could be set in seaside New England city famous for witch trials.

Murdered: Soul Suspect could be set, at least partially, in Salem, Massachusetts. A tweet from the game's official Twitter account reads "Evidence: Salem MA USA."

Inputting "salemmausa" into the game's teaser website yields an MP3 file with the sound of breaking glass and a thump at the end. This matches up with last week's teaser image (below right), which showed a man lying in the street with broken pieces of glass around him.

In addition, the teaser image feature various references to seaside activities, like fishing. This also aligns with the game--or at least the scene in question--being set in Salem, Mass., as the city is set next to the Atlantic Ocean.

Salem, Mass. is most widely known as the location of the Salem witch trials in 1692, where those convicted of witchcraft were publicly executed.

Murdered: Soul Suspect is due out for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC and will have players solving "possibly the hardest case of all," according to Square Enix.

No developer or release date for Murdered: Soul Suspect was provided. It is possible the game could be from Eidos Montreal or Crystal Dynamics, both of which are currently working on unannounced projects.

Some of my ancestors were involved in the witch trials. Don't know which side they were on, but I hope it wasn't the completely ignorant one.

I've been there and the picture really match with the city. If the game is set in Salem I will buy it for sure!

Not to be confused with the Publisher SE, obviously.

That would be cool if it is.

Salem is a great place for a mystery/horror game due to the hysteria of the Witch Trials.

Salem,Mass is the next town over from me.When I played Assassins Creed 3 I was amazed because alot of the streets  in the game world reminded me of alot of how some of Salem's streets are now. There's even boats docked like the one in the game.

Neat.  I've read up on some of the witch trial stuff in Salem and there's a pretty strong belief in the scientific community that the cause of it all was actually a type of fungus!  I can't remember the details, but it's some sort of fungus that can poison/taint wheat and particularly rye, and it was likely tainting the local breads and the like.  Apparently it can cause paranoia, nightmares, and things like that...  pretty interesting I thought!

I think alot of HP Lovecraft novels took place in Salem or towns like Salem as well.  Gamespot, why has this game gotten 2 postings, but you've almost completely ignored Triumph Studios 02/06/13 announcement of Age of Wonders 3?  I never saw one article about them scroll by and I read the news on this site everyday.  I had to search age of wonders 3 to see you posted a video on 02/06/13.  Give some love to a small developer who (so far) has made a great series of Age of Wonder games.

@Gamer_4_Fun There's less pressure near the end, unlike at the beginning where you need to establish a solid fan base.

You're speaking of the theory that ergot poisoning may have been responsible, both for the symptoms allegedly experienced by the "victims", and the subsequent mass hysteria exhibited by the community's populace in an attempt to explain events.

It's a viable hypothesis - but then so is the proposal that a generally uneducated and highly suggestible group of people were whipped into a fever by religious zealots, at the instigation of a group of overly imaginative (and highly repressed) children seeking attention.
