Muramasa: The Demon Blade cuts into Wii

Ignition Entertainment picks up Vanillaware's art-driven action RPG for North American debut this September.

Ignition Entertainment has already positioned itself as a publisher of interesting imports, having secured North American releases for the family-friendly fungi of Boing Docomodake DS and the upcoming SNK revamp King of Fighters XII. Now the publisher is adding another import to its slate. It has announced Muramasa: The Demon Blade for a September release in North America.

Bad day on the high seas.

Developed by Vanillaware (the team behind eye-catching PlayStation 2 efforts such as Odin Sphere and Grim Grimoire), Muramasa is a 2D action role-playing game set in feudal Japan. As a male or female ninja, players plow through branching, side-scrolling levels and face off against rival ninja, samurai, demons, and a variety of monsters pulled from Japanese myths.

Muramasa will support a variety of control options; players can use Classic Controllers or even a GameCube pad if they don't find the standard Wii Remote-and-Nunchuk options to their liking. It will also feature 16:9 widescreen support. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's hands-on impressions of Muramasa: The Demon Blade from the Tokyo Game Show.

@wahyudil - What do you mean? Muramasa is indeed a Wii-exclusive game, unless you are privy to information I'm not aware of.

@lighting_kf : True. With all the casual folks still picking up Wii Fit, and the hardcore market still tied to the 360 and PS3, this game's going to need one hell of a marketing scheme and hype train to get through to the hardcore Wii gamers (the few of us out there). I mean, look at Madworld. Only 66,000 sold so far shows that while it is a damn good game, I don't think there was enough ads behind it for it to pick up steam (but then again, how do you advertise a game that lets you spike dudes on a train?) I really, really, hope this game sells well enough. I'm picking this up first day. I just hope that it doesn't fall through like Psychonauts did: a different and innovative game, that no one played.

I will be proud if this game is exclusive for wii .... but alas, its not ...

I liked Odin Sphere for the short time that I played it...I'm hoping this one turns out well. Definite rental, possible purchase depending on length and replay value.

This game could make me spend money on the Wii for the first time in two years.

I played a little of Odin Sphere and thought it was all right. I'll need to check this out, too.

Too bad most people who'd be interested in this don't own a Wii.

The video of this game looks pretty cool. I dig the artwork and sounds. The gameplay looks pretty cool, but I could see it getting monotonous if it isn't kept fresh with a good story or something. I hope it plays well!

@HailToTheGun I see your point but alot of these 14-year old and younger gamers think that gamers suffered through the 2-D era of games but there are advantages to 2-D games over 3-D games such as a 2-D game dosent have the issue of camera angles or the multiplayer on one console split screen that shows less detail then a shared screen. Im not saying 2-D games are superior but a good 2-D game is an experience you cant get from a 3-D game.

I'm starting to think 14-year old 360/PS3 fans are just giving thumbs down to everyone who's excited for this game. Is that jealousy, I smell? No, it can't be... (inb4 I get a thumbs down)

Another 2D game fot the Wii. With multi-control options, good graphics and hours of fun Muramasa: The Demon Blade is a great game for the 2D game fans. "Capcom: PLEASE, bring Tatsunoko VS Capcom to America for the love of the video game fans".

Smart to have the game come out in September. It'd get slaughtered by the other games coming out for the PS3 and 360 easily.

I want this game! Hopfully the localization comes into a ripe fruitation...

Oh god, you mean the same guys who localized Lux Pain? This is NOT good, even if it does mean we get an official American release. At least Atlus and XSEED did it with professionalism and good attention to detail.

There is a a game exactly like this on newgrounds...it's so weird; I felt like I was having deja vu. Plenty of flash artists have made games like this. Artistically it looks great. gameplay looks just like any of those newgrounds 2D action games except with the Wii-mote. If they get the sensitivity right then the game-play good be fun as well.

A 2D game with 3D animation is all they had to do. Unlike all the hack and slash games that were made for the Wii.

Wish XSEED was still doing it or Atlus at least. Hopefully Ignition will be a little more professional with this than they were with Lux Pain.

Looks pretty good, though hardly revolutionary. Could be a WiiWare game looking at the graphics. Looks like an anime version of Castlevania. But I'm guessing you swing the controller so of course people are going to say it's the most innovative game ever. Who cares. Could be fun anyway though.

Ignition also localized Lux-Pain. I'm just saying. ;) Still, Shane Bettenhausen insists that we won't get a repeat of that, and I'm hoping he's right.
