Mortal Kombat Kollection tops September PSN sales

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment's arcade fighter compilation the best-selling game on Sony's PS3 storefront last month; Resident Evil series claims four of the top 20 spots.

Everything old is new again. Sony today released its list of the top 20 best-selling PlayStation Network games for the month of September, and fully half of the list--including six of the top 10 titles--consisted of retro rereleases.

Topping the PSN sales chart deserves a tip of the hat.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment's Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection topped the list. Released in the last week of August, the coin-op compilation packed in ports of the original Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.

Meanwhile, the Resident Evil series swarmed the sales charts much like its zombie antagonists. The HD rerelease of Resident Evil 4 was the second best seller of the month, with Resident Evil 2 and 3 finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. The Director's Cut version of the original Resident Evil was the 11th best seller. Other vintage releases appearing on the list included the online-enabled Street Fighter III: Third Strike (eighth place), PSone role-playing games Final Fantasy VII (10th place) and Breath of Fire IV (15th place), the PSone action-adventure Parasite Eve II (12th place), and Activision's Call of Duty Classic (18th place).

As for newer offerings, Ubisoft's god game From Dust made it to third place on the charts, while mobile sensation Angry Birds catapulted into fourth place. The full list of September's best-selling PSN games follows below. The list excludes sales to PlayStation Plus members who were able to download games for free.

Good that Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection is the best seller but the online play is laggy and unenjoyable. This game is best to be enjoy with local friends instead of online. No local friends = no fun.

It sucks that Warner Bros. ripped so many people off, this is the worst online multiplayer I have ever experienced with the horrible lag and the matchmaking that simply will not connect you 60% of the time.

from dust is excellent and deserves the sales. The directors cut of RE is not surprising however, as it was given away free to psplus users (In the EU, not sure about NA)

Proof if any was needed that graphics mean nothing in comparison to gameplay and nostalgia. 8D

I hope Code Veronica isn't listed because it came out towards the end of the month. I bought CVX,4, and RE1 and plan on getting 2 and 3 as well. Its awesome that you can buy pretty much all the old re games except for 0 on psn so now counting my re5 I can have all the main re games starting with 1 on my ps3.

@bluebird08: I 10000000000000 percent agreed with you. I have the Ps3,Ps2, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Xbox, Xbox 360, Pc, PSP, and Wii, and i still think the Ps3 is the best out of all of them! :D

@Unfallen_Satan i dont only have a ps3, i have, ps3, xbox 360, gamecube, nintendo 64, a wii, i had a ps1 but then sold it to get ps2, and dont remember what happen to that ps2, but out of all of those i like the ps3 the most, i almost never play the xbox cause the online cost money, and my xbox is pretty much broken

@bluebird2010 I am a PS fan and PS3 owner, so I too feel your love of PS3. However, I prefer a broader scope than just one console so I like the freedom proposed by NodakJo2010. It seems like I am being non-committal on this. I apologize. Right now I have a strong feeling of "why can't we all just get along?" Not agree, but get along nonetheless. :)

@garland51 xbox = suck, PS3 = awesome, at least with ps3 you get free online, and you dont get the stupid red ring of death! oh and you get better exlusive games like uncharted, little big planet, killzone, god of war, resistance, and infamous!

@Unfallen_Satan Mostly because people that have a ps3 probably have memories of ps1 classics. And with those memories becomes rehype of older games such as FF7. Which with the rehype also takes the younger audience to the past with the biggest hits such as Chrono Trigger, FF7, Resident Evil, Spyro, and whatnot....Ignore bluebird08's comment lol...Real Gamers play whatever they want.

That resident evil directors cut on PSN is awful. I'm glad I still have my old disc. The version they have on there is the Dual Shock rendition of it which had all the music replaced with the PC edition's tunes. It ended up sounding more like a Scooby Doo mystery adventure rather than Resident Evil. It would be nice if they threw another older version of it on there since I kind of wanted it for my PSP on the go. Oh well.

FFVII? I hope Square Enix sees the article and realize how much money they'd potentially get from a remake it.

I'll have to get MK 1,2,3 Which are the pixel perfect arcade ports. Even though I played the 3 games to death on the Snes and Sega genesis to death over the years. The exact arcade translations are the best.

@zzamaro Ummm....what? haha. Final Fantasy 7 is probably one of the greatest selling RPG's of all time and changed the way how Roleplaying Games were made and played back in the last 90s.
