More On Ubi Soft Troubles With Enlight

GameSpot News talks with Ubi Soft and gets more details on the "failed" publishing rights negotiations with Seven Kingdom II developer.

Last week Hong Kong-based Enlight Software announced that it had cut all relations with Ubi Soft after failed negotiations over the publishing rights of Seven Kingdoms II. Enlight claimed that after two months of going back and forth neither side could reach any common ground, and would publish Seven Kingdoms II itself sometime in August.

We talked to Ubi Soft on Wednesday afternoon and were given more details about the company's relationship with Enlight. According to an Ubi Soft spokesperson, publishing rights for Seven Kingdoms II were transferred from Interactive Magic to Ubi Soft when the French-based publisher bought most of I-Magic's CD-ROM division earlier this year. Enlight founder Trevor Chan was unhappy with the terms of the I-Magic contract and sought to renegotiate with Ubi Soft after the acquisition was complete. However, shortly after reaching a new agreement with Ubi Soft, Chan backed out, and asked for an additional US$1.5 million payment to be added to the contract. Naturally, Ubi Soft refused, at which point the negotiations fell apart.

Since then, Enlight has stated that it would publish and distribute Seven Kingdoms II itself. However, Ubi Soft told GameSpot News that, since it is contractually bound as the publisher, it would seek legal action against any company attempting to publish the game, including Enlight. To drive that point home, Ubi Soft named Seven Kingdoms II as one of several upcoming titles it plans to publish this year in a press release issued earlier today. At the time of press, nobody from Enlight Software was available for comment.
