More Mobile Savage

S3 moves to solidify its latest graphics processors in the laptop market with an NEC design win.

Comments

Following last week's design win with Micron PC, S3 has just announced that NEC will also integrate its Savage/MX mobile 3D graphics processor into NEC's Versa LX line of laptops.

"S3's Savage/MX allows us to deliver 3D graphics performance with the Versa LXi that is significantly faster than last-generation mobile technology," says NEC VP of product marketing Michael DeNeffe. "For performance-oriented professionals looking for a desktop-replacement notebook with incredible 3D graphics, the Versa LXi is the ideal solution."

According to S3, there are currently two more undisclosed computer manufacturers who'll be using the Mobile Savage chipset in their laptops, including an upcoming Savage/IX design win, towards the end of the year. In case you've forgotten the difference between the Savage/MX and IX, the latter has DRAM integrated directly onto the chipset's core, which removes a significant chunk of the memory bottleneck that plagues typical video cards.

Availability on the Versa LX laptop itself hasn't been announced yet, but as soon as one of these Savage/MX or IX-equipped laptops hits the market, we'll be sure to get our hands all over it and let you know how it fares.
